①A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between East and West for more than 2,000 years.
②But did you know that the Silk Road is not a single route (路线)? It is actually a series of trade and cultural communication routes. It started to take shape during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi province and ended in Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometers long and went across about one-sixth of the planet.
③The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Jade (玉), tea and iron also went west to Rome. From the West came glass, gems (宝石), and foods like carrots and sesame (芝麻).
④The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. Besides trade, knowledge about science, arts and literature, as well as technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and made a big difference to each other.
⑤Today, a number of historical sites along the Silk Road are popular travel places, such as the Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑) in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Dunhuang, Gansu.

At an early age, we start learning how to manage money by watching our parents’ spending habits. Don’t worry if we don’t learn well how to save or spend money. The following life lessons about money can help us develop good spending habits.
Money doesn’t grow on trees. As kids, we don’t often think about where money comes from. We need to know that our parents work hard to make money, and that it may be used up one day. Going to their workplaces to watch how they work is a great way to understand money is not that easy to make.
We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget (预算). In other words, we need to think about how much money we have and what we really want to spend it on. Realizing that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal (目标) and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How? Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satiate us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account (账户) is? If not, communicate with our parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
Without doubt, we should treat money in a right way. Actually, learning about money isn’t a hard job. From these lessons, we can get a sense of money management and know money better step by step.
28. How does the writer explain the idea in paragraph 4?
A. By giving an example. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing numbers. D. By showing the facts.
29. What does the underlined word “satiate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Relax. B. Interest. C. Trouble. D. Satisfy.
30. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A. Adults can make money grow more.
B. Kids should have a money spending plan.
C. Parents may give kids lots of pocket money.
D. Supermarkets will be places to change money.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Causes of Spending Money B. Ways of Managing Money
C. Purposes of Treating Money D. Reasons for Saving Money

The sound of little wings flapping (上下挥动) through the air came from behind her, and she turned to see her robin coming to say hello.
“He remembers me!” she cried.
“Remembers you?” said the gardener (园丁). “Of course he does! You’re the only little girl around here. He’s interested to know everything about you!”
Mary was very happy to hear this, and she walked away, feeling very proud to have such a bird as her friend. As she was walking, she saw that the robin followed her, and was now looking for food on the ground nearby. She got down on her knees and tried to move closer to watch him work for his food. He jumped around on the dirt (尘土) under the flowers and stopped for a moment on an area where the dirt was turned over. Maybe a dog had dug up the dirt while running after something. Not finding any fresh worms (虫子) there, the robin moved on, and then flew up into a tree.
Mary, however, saw something under the dirt. She brushed the dirt away, and found a key there. It was very old-looking, and seemed to have been lying there for a long time, perhaps even ten years.
Mary put the key in her pocket and continued her walk around the gardens. She looked hard for a door in the wall around the closed garden, but found nothing. Finally, it was about the dinner time so she gave up and returned to the house. At the table, she couldn’t stop thinking about the key and the door...
—Adapted from The Secret Garden

①“Drink eight cups of water.” We’ve all heard the advice. But if you fall short, don’t worry. That advice is probably wrong, anyway. That’s according to new research. It found that for most healthy adults, drinking eight cups of water a day is unnecessary. Instead, it may be dangerous. If you do drink eight cups of water, you are probably just going to be spending more time in the bathroom.
②In fact, this misunderstanding has something to do with the suggestion before. Early in 1945, the U.S. National Research Council (国家研究委员会) advised adults to drink about 1.9 liters (升) of water daily. The suggestion is about a person’s total daily intake (摄入) of water from fruit, vegetables and soup. But it has been widely misunderstood. Many people believe they should drink eight glasses of water every day.
③So, how much water do you need to drink daily? The study found that it’s different from one person to another. It depends on your age, size, physical activity and the weather in your city.
④Our needs for water are the highest between the ages of 20 and 50. After that, the needs slowly go down. That’s because our metabolism (新陈代谢) slows down after the age of 50, and our needs for water go down, too.
⑤Also, since men usually have larger bodies than women, they need more water. People whose jobs need more physical activities need more water than those who work in the office. And people who live in the place with hot weather need more water than those who live in the place with cold weather.
⑥All in all, most of you don’t have to worry about not having enough water yet. And you don’t really have to work out how much water you need by measuring (测量) your size and physical activity. Just drink whenever you are thirsty. Water is the best choice. Coffee and tea are fine as well. But try not to have drinks with sugar. They can cause a lot of health problems.
36. Which picture shows the right relationship between X and Y?
A. B. C. D.
37. Who may need to drink the most water every day?
A. Tom, a 30-year-old teacher who teaches P.E. at school.
B. Helen, a 30-year-old computer programmer who often sits.
C. Claudia, a 13-year-old girl who is a middle school student.
D. Aron, a 66-year-old pianist who often plays around the world.
38. What does the writer want to tell people?
A. They have to drink water and tea to be fit.
B. Different people need different intakes of water.
C. They should spend time reading studies on water.
D. Everyone needs to drink water eight cups every day.
39. What’s the best structure of this passage?

Recently, the morning and evening study sessions (早晚自习) in several senior high schools have been canceled. And some parents and their kids gave their opinions on this cancellation (取消) on the Internet.
I am really shocked that schools have canceled these study sessions! If my son has difficulty with his schoolwork, who can he ask for help? Most parents aren’t able to guide their kids in their studies. The study sessions were a great way to make sure that every student had a fair chance to improve their learning with the help of teachers.
Mrs. Wang
Well, I’m glad to see that my son can get more sleep since he doesn’t need to attend the morning sessions. He must be happy for that as well. But I’m really worried that without the evening study sessions, will he still study hard at home? He used to depend on that time to focus.
Mr. Jiang
Thank God it’s over! Since I entered senior high school, I have always felt tired during the morning study sessions because I often stay up late at night. Also, during the evening sessions, teachers always gave us tons of exercises. As a result, I was under too much stress. My physical and mental health is what I value most. Now, I can finally sleep a bit longer and have more time for myself.
Teng Fei
To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about the cancellation of these study sessions. On the one hand, I’m happy that I’ll have more personal time. On the other hand, I’m a bit worried about my grades, especially in math. Well, none of my family members are good at math. So how can I improve my math without my teacher’s help?

Communication is a part of life. It is the way of getting information and ideas among people or groups through the use of spoken words, symbols and so on. It makes it possible for us to show our thoughts, feelings, and needs, and to understand the views and experiences of others. Communication helps us build strong relationships. It can even keep us from getting into a fight. Also, it’s a necessary way for us to learn from each other and make ourselves better people. Good communication is a useful skill. So how can we have it? Let’s take a look.
Timing is important. Think about when the person really wants to listen before choosing the time. Also, if you need to have a serious talk with a family member, you probably should not start it at once. Make sure to leave enough time for talking.
The place where you talk is also important. A good place can help a lot. Oppositely(相反地), a bad place can make a mess. The more comfortable the place is, the better your communication will be.
When someone is talking to you, don’t let other things take your attention (注意力). It’s best to put your phone down and not look around. If you don’t pay enough attention, you may miss important words. Also, looking at the person and listening carefully shows your respect to them.
Start out by explaining your goal (目的) for the talk. This will help people know about the reason why you start the talk.
As we practice and develop our communication skills, we will find that our study, work, even the life will improve.
