I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well known as Paul — he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents (经纪人) or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive. and making fun of each other — but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back — he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
24. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first?
A. Paul Newman wanted it.
B. The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C. He wasn’t famous enough.
D. The director introduced someone else.
25. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?
A. They were of the same age.
B. They worked in the same theater.
C. They were both good actors.
D. They have similar characters.
26. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Their belief. B. Their care for children.
C. Their success. D. Their support for each other.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show his love of films. B. To remember a friend.
C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically tough, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is about twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not beat on the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries related to running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first turn to a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
28. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A. They must run long distances.
B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow specific rules.
D. They are good at swinging their legs.
29. What advantage does race walking have over running?
A. It’s more popular at the Olympics.
B. It’s less challenging physically.
C. It’s more effective in body building.
D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
30. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A. Getting experts’ opinions. B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Doing regular exercises.
31. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking?
A. Doubtful B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
D
The search for beauty spans centuries. Paintings of Egyptians dating back to 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发) of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.
There is at least one good reason for the desire (渴望) to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.
But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.
The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists (心理学家) , men show a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously (无意识地) tells men and women that these features — the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders — equal health and genetic well-being.
Not everyone thinks the same way. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin, but is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists’ answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and changes around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.
For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical features considered universally attractive, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder (观看者).
32. People’s ideas about beauty ________.
A. can be easily described
B. are based upon strict standard
C. have existed since ancient times
D. have little influence on a person’s success
33. In Paragraph 3, the babies in the study ________.
A. were rated for their appearance
B. showed a preference for women with larger eyes
C. were shown photos of a group of college students
D. were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones
34. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. the ideas of beauty change as people grow up
B. the standards for beauty are based on scientific researches
C. the search for beauty is the power to inspire the beholder
D. the understanding of beauty is rooted in cultural backgrounds
35. What can probably be the best title for this passage?
A. The History of Beauty B. The Mystery of Beauty
C. The Standards for Beauty D. The Attitudes toward Beauty

How to Study for a Test or Final
The end of the term is drawing near, and that means final exams are on the way. 36
The most important thing you can do is give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Then follow this plan:
Start early.
Gather all the material you’ve received during the term. Read through your class notes twice. Some things will sound familiar and some things will sound unfamiliar. That’s normal.
Establish a study group or find a partner.
Schedule at least one meeting with a study partner or study group. If you can’t completely get together, then exchange email addresses. 37
Use old tests.
Collect your old exams from the year (or semester) and make a photocopy of each one. Write out the test answers and copy each one again.
38
To get the best results, you should make several copies of each old exam and keep taking the tests until you score perfectly on each one.
Build up your class notes.
Organize your notes by date and make note of any missing dates / pages. Get together with a study partner or group to compare notes and fill in any missing material. 39 Everybody may fail to stay focused once in a while. After you organize your new set of notes, underline any key words, formulas, themes, and concepts.
Make yourself a new practice test with term definitions and others. Print out several tests and practice several times. 40 Then exchange.
Make use of old assignments.
Gather some old assignments and redo the exercises. Review those exercises until you can answer every question easily.
A. Instant messages will work well, too.
B. Have a set of practice tests.
C. How can you give yourself a chance to improve your scores?
D. You might find one that makes something clear for the first time.
E. Ask the members of your study group to make practice tests as well.
F. Don’t be too surprised if you missed key information from the lectures.
G. Have your friend or study partner raise questions and compare them.

W: Let me have a look. The home button, the power button… Don’t worry. Everything is OK.
2. 【原文】W: Mike and I are getting together for dinner. Do you want to come with us?
M: Yeah, that would be nice. I have a meeting in about ten minutes. I can meet you afterward if that’s OK.
W: That’s fine. Who is you meeting with?
M: The Boston Insurance Company.
3. 【原文】M: Mom saw that I needed a new backpack, so she’s going to take us shopping today!
W: I wonder if I will get some new shoes today.
M: Why? You already have so many!
W: Those don’t fit me anymore.
4. 【原文】M: Hey Mary, I’m tired. Would you mind driving for a while?
W: I would like to, but I don’t know how to drive.
M: Really? Don’t you have a license? I thought everyone had a license.
5. 【原文】W: Do you cook vegetables?
M: I cook vegetables or I eat vegetables fresh. For example, I’ll cut up a cucumber, and put some salt on it and eat with my lunch.
W: I love vegetable sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks.
6. 【原文】W: Hello?
M: Hi, is Heather there, please?
W: Sorry, I think you have the wrong number.
M: Is this 617-228-2289?
W: Yes. Who are you looking for again?

W: You could always change.
M: I guess so, but I can’t be bothered. Anyway, it’s great to have a big, flat-screen TV. There’s also a coffee maker, so I can make coffee whenever I want it. W: I was reading a diet book the other day. It said that if you eat meat and nothing else, you’ll lose weight quickly. One of my friends told me he tried it and lost 20 pounds.
M: That sounds good, but I’m not sure how long I could do that. Well, I think I’m going to try it anyway. Who’s the author?

W: Nothing much. I’m on my way to the shopping center. Hey, do you remember Lana? She’s over there. She’s always at the shopping center!
M: Who? Oh yeah. I remember Lana. She’s the one with the scary-looking dog. I don’t want to hang out with that dog!

10. M: The summer vacation in New Delhi begins in May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.
