II. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 minutes)
1. Greeting: Greet students in English and have a short interactive talk.
Teacher: Good morning, class! How’s your day going? Last class, we talked about different jobs and listened to an interesting interview. Today, we will meet a special person who had a big career change. Let’s guess: What kind of job do you think he did at first? And what job does he do now? (Show pictures of mouse catcher and space tour guide, invite 2-3 students to guess.)
2. Lead-in: Introduce the topic of the lesson and the text.
Teacher: Today, we will read a text called "From Mouse Catcher to Space Tour Guide". It tells a wonderful story about a man’s career change—from a common mouse catcher to a cool space tour guide. Let’s read the text and find out his story!
Step 2: Pre-reading (6 minutes)
1 Present new words and phrases: Show the new words and phrases on the PPT, read them aloud, explain their meanings briefly and combine them with pictures or simple sentences to help students understand.
Key words and phrases: mouse catcher (捕鼠工), space tour guide (太空导游), career (职业), change (v. & n. 改变), experience (n. 经历), realize (v. 意识到), dream (n. 梦想; v. 梦想), effort (n. 努力), skill (n. 技能), prepare for (为……做准备), give up (放弃), through (prep. 通过)Example sentences: 1. He used to be a mouse catcher, but now he is a space tour guide. 2. We need to prepare for our future career. 3. Through hard work, we can realize our dreams.
2 Predict the text: Ask students to look at the title of the text and the pictures (if any), and predict the content of the text.
Teacher: Look at the title "From Mouse Catcher to Space Tour Guide". Why did he change his job from a mouse catcher to a space tour guide? What difficulties did he meet? Please predict and share your ideas with your deskmate.
Step 3: While-reading (18 minutes)
Task 1: Fast reading — Get the main idea (5 minutes)
Task 2: Careful reading — Extract key details (8 minutes)
Task 3: Analyze the text structure (5 minutes)
Step 4: While-writing (10 minutes)
1 Why do you think jobs change over time?
I think jobs change over time mainly because of new technology and people’s changing needs. For example, long ago, many people worked on farms. Later, machines were invented, so fewer farmers were needed, but more factory workers were needed. Now, computers and robots can do some repetitive jobs, so jobs like cashier or data entry clerk may be fewer. At the same time, new jobs appear, such as app developer or social media manager, because people use smartphones and the internet a lot. So changes in technology and society make some old jobs disappear and new jobs appear.
2. Which comment do you most agree with? Why?
I most agree with JZhang00’s comment. Because the job market changes very fast—if we just stay in our comfort zone and refuse to adapt, we might be left behind. His idea reminds us to be proactive about changes, which is practical for dealing with future job challenges.
3 How can we keep up with the changing job market?
Learn new skills, especially in technology, communication, and problem-solving.
Stay curious about new trends, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or green energy.
Try different activities or subjects in school to find what we like and are good at.
Be flexible — be willing to adjust our career plans and try new types of work.
Step 5: Post-writing (4 minutes)
1 What does Cynthia263 mean by “Will pilots' jobs go up in smoke?"
Cynthia263 means that she is worried that pilots' jobs may completely disappear in the future. “Go up in smoke” is like saying something burns away into nothing
2 What does JZhang00 mean by "sit at our desks"?
Here, “sit at our desks” is a metaphor for doing nothing and being unresponsive to changes. He means that the world of work is changing fast, so we must learn new skills and be ready for new kinds of work, instead of doing nothing and hoping things stay the same..
3 What does JerryMc's comment mean?
JerryMc is joking but also serious. He wants to try space travel, but he is worried that if his job as a cashier disappears, he won’t have enough money to go. So his comment shows a mix of interest in new things and anxiety about job loss.
Step 6: Summary & Homework (2 minutes)
Summarize the text structure:
1. Part 1 (Para. 1): Introduction — Who the person is and his initial job (mouse catcher).
2. Part 2 (Para. 2-3): Development — The reason for career change and the process of preparing for the new job.
3. Part 3 (Para. 4): Conclusion — His current job (space tour guide) and gains from the career change.
Homework:
1. Read the text "From Mouse Catcher to Space Tour Guide" aloud 3 times and recite the key sentences.
2. Revise your writing according to the peer review and teacher’s comments, and copy it neatly.
3. Talk with your family about their career stories and write down 2-3 key sentences in English.
