Apart from providing a place to rest, a chair can demonstrate the very best in innovative design, indicate the most individual tastes, and can be the measure of wider artistic and cultural movements. Here are some famous chairs of all time.
Panton Chair
Designer: Verner Panton
The Panton Chair is a classic in the furniture market. Designed in 1960, the chair was developed for serial production in 1967. It was the first chair to be made entirely out of plastic in one single piece. The Panton Chair has received several international design awards.
Wegner Wishbone Chair
Designer: Hans Wegner
The Wishbone Chair first appeared in 1949. This chair remains a classic to this day. While designing this chair, Wegner chose to combine the wooden back and armrest into a single piece. To give stability to the top and ensure comfortable support, Wegner developed the characteristic Y-shaped back that the Wishbone chair is named after.
Adirondack Chair
Designer: Thomas Lee
The first Adirondack chair was created by Thomas Lee around 1903. The Adirondack chair is an outdoor chair with wide armrests, a tall back, and a seat that is higher in the front than the back. The original design featured a small number of flat wooden boards, with the seat support combined with the back legs.
Director’s Chair
Designer: Gold Medal Camp Furniture Company
With design roots dating back to a X-shaped Roman seat, the Director’s Chair in the 1920s is widely used on film sets. It is a lightweight chair that folds side-to-side with a scissors action. The seat and back are made of strong fabric that bears the full weight of the user and can be folded. The frame is made of wood, sometimes metal or plastic.
21. Which of the following is an Adirondack Chair?
A. B.
C. D.
22. What do the four chairs have in common?
A. They are in one single piece.
B. They received design awards.

Abdu, a 17-year-old, dreams of going to medical school in Ireland and becoming a doctor. He believes his volunteer work is preparing him for this challenging future. “It’s really important that people go out of their comfort zone,” Abdu said. “Doing that, you gain lots of skills that you would not gain without the experience. And that’s what volunteering was for me.”
Abdu’s journey began with sports. From a young age, he found peace and joy in physical activities like skating, swimming, and soccer. However, as he started to look forward, his focus shifted from playing the game to sharing it. “I looked at the coaches and thought if they’re willing to volunteer their time to make sure that I’m here having a good time, then why can’t I do the same in the future?” Abdu said. “I wanted to ensure that every kid is able to enjoy the same thing that I was able to enjoy and just experience the sports that I had the experience of playing.” At 16, he decided to become a volunteer and pass on everything he had learned about sports.
While his soccer skills and enthusiasm were there, he had no experience teaching or leading. Later, Abdu got a chance to be an assistant coach for a children’s soccer team. This experience greatly enhanced his leadership skills. One evening, when the head coach was absent, Abdu was asked to run the practice himself. Though nervous, he jumped at the chance and successfully led the team, making all the kids happy and boosting his own confidence.
Volunteering has built his confidence, sharpened his skills, and opened new possibilities. He knows that medical schools look for more than just good grades; they also value applicants’ experiences. Thanks to his volunteering, Abdu now has plenty of valuable experience for his future.
24. What did Abdu think of volunteer work?
A. Stressful. B. Valuable.
C. Comforting. D. Annoying.
25. Why did Abdu decide to become a volunteer?
A. He was touched by the kids.
B. He was inspired by his coach.
C. He wanted to gain experience.
D. He found peace in volunteering.
26. What can be learned from Abdu’s coaching experience?
A. Chances favor the prepared mind.
B. Think twice before you act.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Confidence is the key to success.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Turning Sports into Service.
B. Seizing Chances for Growth.
C. Shifting Goals for Future Roles.
D. Devoting Passion to Profession.

Dear readers, I have to admit: I am suffering from what the younger ones call “brain rot”, the inability to think deeply after spending too much time on my phone. These days, it’s tough to even finish a book.
There are so many people who have this problem that it has birthed a category of minimalist tech products trying to free us from distractions. The latest example, the $600 Light Phone III, from a Brooklyn start-up, is a phone that does barely anything. The newest version can place calls, send texts, take photos, show map directions, play music and not do much else. There is also no app store, and no social media. There isn’t even email.
I was curious to see if the Light Phone could cure me of brain rot, so I used it as my primary phone for a week. There were moments I enjoyed it. While waiting for a train, resting at the gym or eating alone, I was not drawn to stare at the phone screen, and I felt more mindful of my surroundings.
But over the week, the downsides of the Light phone weakened my enjoyment gradually, and over all I felt more stressed and less capable. I suddenly found myself unable to get into a train station, look up the name of a new restaurant or control my air conditioner. Some of that has less to do with the Light Phone itself, and more to do with how society as a whole has become dependent on advanced smartphone features.
While I admire the goal of the Light Phone, my experience demonstrates there’s nothing we can realistically do or buy to bring us back to simpler times. So many aspects of our lives, including getting around town, working, paying for things and controlling home appliances, depend on our highly capable smartphones.
28. What is the author suffering from these days?
A. Inability of deep thinking.
B. Stress from younger ones.
C. Headaches from a disease.
D. Pressure of finishing a book.
29. What is the primary purpose of the Light Phone?
A. To reduce digital distractions.
B. To develop new applications.
C. To offer basic phone functions.
D. To simplify communication tools.
30. What did the Light Phone bring to the author at first?
A. Memory of good old days.
B. Awareness of surroundings.
C. Enjoyment in daily routines.
D. Establishment of good habits.
31. What can be inferred from the author’s experience?
A. The light phone cures the author’s suffering.
B. Simplified devices can ensure a happier life.
C. Smartphones are to blame for modern stress.
D. People have to learn to live with smartphones.

Imagine being a tiny baby snail (蜗牛), just floating around the vast ocean for months until you find a suitable place to grow into an adult. This is the life of Kellet’s whelks. Historically, these sea snails lived only in the warm waters of Southern California and Mexico. However, in recent years, some have moved 300 kilometers north, to much colder waters, and scientists wanted to find out if they had truly adapted to the colder northern environment.
To investigate this, researchers collected Kellet’s whelks from both southern and northern parts of the Pacific Coast of California. They brought all the snails to a special tank and kept them in controlled conditions. The adult snails were allowed to have babies. Scientists then studied the babies’ DNA because they had spent their entire lives in the same environment, making sure any observed differences were due to their genes, not their life experiences.
The study revealed significant genetic differences between the northern and southern snails. A large number of genes (2,770) were working differently in the northern snails, with 64% of these genes being more active. These distinct gene patterns allowed researchers to accurately tell if a baby snail’s parents were from the north or south just by looking at its DNA. These results strongly suggest that the northern snails have adapted to their new, colder habitat. This adaptation involved mutations — if their genes hadn’t changed, the researchers wouldn’t have been able to tell the snails apart.
But why did these whelks move north and how did they adapt? Changing ocean currents carried some baby snails northward, and occasional warmer water bursts made it easier for them to survive there initially. Over time, snails that already had slight DNA differences helping them handle colder temperatures were more likely to survive and multiply. This research can help us understand how other ocean animals might respond to a changing climate and support sustainable fishing practices for species like Kellet’s whelks.
32. What is the recent discovery about Kellet’s whelks?
A. A loss of their babies.
B. A change in their size.
C. A shift in their habitats.
D. A drop in their population.
33. Why did the scientists study the DNA of baby snails?
A. To record their life experience.
B. To make different observations.
C. To rule out environmental factors.
D. To control their living conditions.
34. What does the underlined word “mutations” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Changes in the DNA.
B. Differences in the form.
C. Weaknesses in the body.
D. Adjustments in behavior.
35. How is the text structured?
A. Problem — Analysis — Solutions — Actions.
B. Phenomenon — Methods — Findings — Implication.
C. Argument — Evidence — Explanation — Conclusion.
D. Observation — Assumption — Comparison — Application.

A golden mist settled over the cornfields as the sun went down. After saying goodbye to the Surma clan (宗族), I walked back to the camp, hoping to put my camera aside and think about the past four days in Ethiopia. I had taken photos of so many tribespeople (部落成员) who had asked for a picture, and I was completely tired out.
“Photo, photo!” A clear shout broke the quiet. I turned around and saw an eight-year-old Surma boy running after me, his bare feet touching the soft ground. The sunset made his small body look long. His dark eyes were full of strong hope. I wanted to say no — tiredness had taken away my interest — but his steady look, as he kept up with me without stopping, moved me. Suddenly, an idea for a good picture came to my mind: the boy standing among the corn, with the sun behind him, his shape shining against the yellow mist.
I knelt down on the cool grass, making signs to let him stand where the light and shadow mixed perfectly. I told him to hold a corn stalk (秆). But when I lifted the camera, he became camera-shy. His excitement turned into shyness and he looked down at his feet. I spoke softly to encourage him, but he still stood straight, biting his lip. I felt a little annoyed, but to encourage him, I put down the camera and clapped my hands. “You’re doing really well!”
Right away, the clan people came around, shouting happily. The boy suddenly lifted his head, a wide smile spreading across his face — bright and natural. I pressed the shutter (快门) quickly, keeping that moment forever. Later, when I looked at the photo, I understood he had never wanted something perfect. He just wanted to be noticed. I found a kind of richness that was missing in my world. I knew then that photography was more than just a skill — it had become a bridge connecting hearts.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

W: Exactly. And the air will be fresher after the rain — great for mountain climbing. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket, though. It might be a bit cool.
M: Got it. I’ll also pack some waterproof bags just in case.

【原文】M: Hi Clara, I know you’ve been working with the local wildlife protection group. What made you focus on wild foxes specifically?
W: Well, the forest on the town’s edge was cut down last year for a new road. Many foxes lost their homes and started wandering into neighborhoods, getting hurt by cars. It really worried me.
M: That’s awful. Have you faced any big challenges in helping them?
W: Definitely. We need more professional cages to rescue injured foxes, but donations have been slow. Also, some villagers still leave poisonous food out, thinking foxes steal chickens — we’ve tried explaining, but it’s hard to change old ideas.
M: I’d like to volunteer. Any upcoming plans?
W: We’re hosting a workshop next Sunday at the community center. We’ll show photos of the foxes and teach people how to exist with them. We hope more people will support our work.
M: Sounds great! I’ll be there with my classmates.

【原文】Good afternoon, everyone. Today I’m here to introduce a new English learning app that can help you improve your language skills. As we all know, many students find it difficult to practice oral English because they don’t have enough conversation partners. This app solves that problem by offering real-life conversation situations — such as ordering food in a restaurant, asking for directions, and having casual chats with native speakers.
The app is not free, but it’s very affordable. For students, we have a special discount — you can get a 30% off if you sign up this month. What’s more, the app provides personalized learning plans based on your English level. You can set your own learning goals and track your progress easily.
To encourage you to use the app regularly, we have a point system. You can get extra points by completing daily tasks, like listening to English news or practicing dialogues. These points can be exchanged for English learning materials, such as textbooks and audio books. If you have any questions about the app, please feel free to ask me after the speech.

【答案】28. A 29. A 30. B 31. D

【答案】32. C 33. C 34. A 35. B

根据第一段中“Historically, these sea snails lived only in the warm waters of Southern California and Mexico. However, in recent years, some have moved 300 kilometers north, to much colder waters, and scientists wanted to find out if they had truly adapted to the colder northern environment.( 从历史上看,这些海螺只生活在加利福尼亚州南部和墨西哥的温暖水域中。然而,近年来,一些海螺向北迁移了 300 公里,来到了更为寒冷的水域。科学家们想要弄清楚它们是否真的适应了更寒冷的北方环境。)”可知,这种海螺原本生活在南加州和墨西哥暖水区,近年向北迁移 300 公里到冷水域,即栖息地发生了迁移变化。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“They brought all the snails to a special tank and kept them in controlled conditions. The adult snails were allowed to have babies. Scientists then studied the babies’ DNA because they had spent their entire lives in the same environment, making sure any observed differences were due to their genes, not their life experiences.( 他们将所有海螺带到一个特殊的水箱中,并在可控的条件下饲养它们。成年海螺被允许繁殖后代。随后,科学家们研究了幼崽的 DNA,因为它们一生都在相同的环境中生活,从而确保观察到的任何差异都是由基因决定的,而非生活经历所致。)”可知,研究幼螺 DNA 是为了确保差异源于基因,而非生活环境/经历,也就是排除环境因素的干扰。故选C项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中划线单词后文“if their genes hadn’t changed, the researchers wouldn’t have been able to tell the snails apart.( 如果它们的基因没有发生变化,研究人员就无法区分这些蜗牛。)”由此可知,这种适应过程涉及基因突变。故可猜测划线单词mutations为“突变”的意思,和A选项Changes in the DNA.“DNA 的变化”意思相近。故选A项。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Back in my urban studio, I often stared at that boy’s bright smile.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
One afternoon, a letter with the familiar tribal mark came.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Back in my urban studio, I often stared at that boy’s bright smile. The warm light of the photo always made me think of the Surma people’s simple happiness — so different from my busy, messy city life. I began to rethink my photography style: no longer trying for perfect, faultless pictures, but focusing on real, true feelings. Every time I picked up my camera, the boy’s bright, eager eyes seemed to push me to look deeper than just the surface.
Paragraph 2:
One afternoon, a letter with the familiar tribal mark came. Sent by a passing traveler, it was from the Surma tribe. They wrote that the boy valued the photo deeply, keeping it carefully in a cloth bag and showing it proudly to every visitor. Moved by their warmth, I quickly packed my camera things. This time, I went back not to “take” photos, but to “share” moments — laughing with the clansmen, helping gather golden crops, and catching the small joys in their daily lives. That trip taught me a valuable lesson: the best photos are not just records, but sincere gifts.
