Recently, video clips of Zhang Jianns, a sanitation (环卫) worker, directing foreigners have gone viral online. Her fluent English and confident feature showcased in the videos have deeply impressed the viewers, sparking curiosity about how an ordinary-looking sanitation worker had such impressive English skills.
Behind the hit lies a decade-long journey of persistence. In 2012, Zhang Jianna took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy (大使馆) area of Sanlitun in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. A special encounter while working has motivated Zhang to learn English by herself, which she continues with determination to this day. “My goal is quite simple. I just want to help whenever Someone is in need, whether asking for directions, visa procedures, or telling them about the embassy area I am responsible for,” said Zhang.
Thus, at the age of 40, Zhang began a personal challenge. Without a teacher, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions. With no fixed study hours, she used every spare moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would write down new knowledge points and review them until she thoroughly understood them. Over the years, she has filled over a dozen notebooks. Her memory posed her biggest challenge. “Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned before. Persistence is the key to learning English. Learn step by step, learn every day,” Zhang said.
When asked about the greatest reward of learning English, Zhang said, “Growing up in a rural area without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly accomplished.” “Tiring, but satisfying,” Zhang Jianna reflects on her work and language learning. “To serve others makes me happy, and it’s where I prove my self-worth,” said Zhang. “After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and improve local tourism,” she said, acknowledging that her inspiring journey has led to this new goal.
4. What aroused curiosity about Zhang Jianna?
A. Her confident expression. B. Her role as a sanitation worker.
C. Her great fluency in English. D. Her friendly attitude to foreigners.
5. How did Zhang Jianna learn English?
A. With the help of a teacher. B. Through watching videos online.
C. From her children’s textbooks. D. By attending language classes.
6. What does Zhang Jianna think of the greatest reward of learning English?
A. Better job opportunities. B. Respect from family members.
C. Social recognition. D. Self-confidence.
7. What is Zhang Jianna’s future goal related to English learning?
A. To promote local tourism in her hometown. B. To become a language teacher.
C. To work in an embassy abroad. D. To write a book in English.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. D 7. A

It’s easy to keep your aging brain as quick as it was in college. Use a website full of brain games or download the right apps, and within 20 minutes you’ll be doing your part to sharpen your memory and slow the decline of your mental functions. At least that’s what the companies behind this booming industry would have you believe. But is it true?
Concrete proof about the benefits of brain games is hard to come by, experts say, when it comes to measurably improving aspects of mental fitness, like having a good memory. “People would really love to believe they could do something like this and make their brain better, but there’s just no solid evidence,” says Randall W. Engle, a primary investigator at the Attention & Working Memory Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
That’s not to say brain games are without benefits. Experts say these kinds of mental exercises can change your brain. The brain changes with just about everything you do, including mental training exercises. But numerous studies have shown that brain games lack what researchers call “transfer”. In other words, repeating a game over and over again teaches you how to play the game and get better at it but your brain aging won’t necessarily come to a stop.
“It’s like, you walk through fresh snow, and you leave a trace. If you walk the same route again, the trace gets deeper and deeper,” says Ursula Staudinger, director of the Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. The fact that structural changes occur does not imply that in general this brain has become more capable. It has become more capable of doing exactly the tasks it was practicing.
8. What does the writer intend to do in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a new theory. B. To promote a new app.
C. To question an idea. D. To correct a mistake.
9. What does Engle think of the functions of brain games?
A. Their effects still need proving. B. They have little practical effects.
C. They really make some difference. D. They are bound to benefit brain health.
10. The underlined word in paragraph 3 most probably refers to “the ability to ________”.
A. stop the brain aging B. keep the brain functioning
C. speed up the brain aging D. improve gaming skills
11. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Games Prevent Brain from Turning Slow B. How to Slow the Decline of Brain Functions
C. Stop Brain aging? Games’ Roles Need Proving D. Brain Games A Boost to Your Mental Fitness
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. C

根据第一段“At least that’s what the companies behind this booming industry would have you believe. But is it true?(至少在这个蓬勃发展的行业背后的公司是这么希望你相信的。但事实果真如此吗?)”可推知,作者对其真实性表示怀疑。故第一段的作用是质疑一个说法。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段““People would really love to believe they could do something like this and make their brain better, but there’s just no solid evidence,” says Randall W. Engle, a primary investigator at the Attention & Working Memory Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology.(“人们确实非常愿意相信自己能够做到这样的事情,从而让自己的大脑变得更聪明,但目前并没有确凿的证据支持这一说法。”佐治亚理工学院注意力与工作记忆实验室的首席研究员兰德尔·W·恩格尔如是说道)”可知,Engle认为脑力游戏的作用还有待证明。故选A。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“In other words, repeating a game over and over again teaches you how to play the game and get better at it but your brain aging won’t necessarily come to a stop.(换句话说,反复玩同一款游戏能让你掌握游戏的玩法并提高游戏水平,但你的大脑衰老过程并不会因此停止)”可知,研究都表明脑力游戏不能使大脑停止老化。故划线词意思是“停止大脑老化”。故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“It’s easy to keep your aging brain as quick as it was in college. Use a website full of brain games or download the right apps, and within 20 minutes you’ll be doing your part to sharpen your memory and slow the decline of your mental functions. At least that’s what the companies behind this booming industry would have you believe. But is it true?(要让日渐衰老的大脑保持像在大学时代那样敏捷并非难事。
D
Whether it’s a cup of coffee or tea, many people look for a caffeine (咖啡因) fix to kick-start their day. During waking hours, caffeine helps improve concentration. But how does it influence sleep?
“A person’s sleep is unique to his body type, health and age,” said Lauri Leadley, the founder of the Valley Sleep Center in Arizona. “Everyone is genetically (基因地) programmed to follow the rising and setting of the sun. But caffeine can break this natural sleep-wake habit, influencing sleep.”
According to a 2022 review, adenosine levels are higher at night, meaning people feel sleepy by bedtime. Having caffeine controls it, which makes it difficult for people to fall asleep. Caffeine also controls other chemicals produced in the body. “When we have caffeine during the day, by nighttime it causes a fall in melatonin (褪黑激素), something that improves sleep, which is one of the reasons why sleep is influenced,” said Dr. Peter Polos, a sleep medicine specialist.
“Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour.
However, caffeine doesn’t just influence how long you sleep but how well you sleep. “Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling lively in the morning,” Polos said. It’s a period of sleep that seems to play an important role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. Most adults spend 10% to 20% of sleep on slow-wave sleep.
However, the influence of caffeine on a person is subject to things including age and genes. One 2017 review in the Sleep Medicine Reviews suggests that people become more sensitive to caffeine as they get older, while differences between people of the same age could be related to genetic differences.
12. How does caffeine influence people’s sleep?
A. By changing people’s genes. B. By increasing slow-wave sleep.
C. By cutting chemicals like melatonin. D. By righting people’s sleep-wake cycle.
13. Why does the author mention the 2013 study?
A. To introduce a new idea. B. To back up Leadley’s argument.
C. To compare different studies. D. To show the bad influence of caffeine.
14. What can we infer about slow-wave sleep?
A. It is important to human health.
B. It influences the length of sleep.
C. It takes up less and less of sleep time.
D. It can be increased by more daytime rest.
15. Which section of the newspaper is the text probably taken from?
A. Economy B. Culture C. Health D. Education
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour.
根据第五段“Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling lively in the morning. (咖啡因会减少慢波睡眠,而慢波睡眠是一段深度、宁静的睡眠,让我们在早上感到充满活力)”以及“It's a period of sleep that seems to play an important role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. The New Kid in Class
At the beginning of the new term, every student came to school happily. One day, Jackson, a friendly student, sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid in class. His name was Billy, who just moved here from Florida. His first day in class was yesterday and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, at rest, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend.
When the bell rang for a rest, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
”Hi Billy,“ Jackson said with a smile as they walked outside. ”Do you want to play basketball?“
”No. I’m not very good at basketball. “
”Do you want to play kickball? “ Jackson asked again.
”No. I’m not good at that either, “ Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the school yard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things and both times Billy said no. He felt a little depressed. Maybe Billy didn’t like to get along with Jackson. Maybe he didn’t want to be friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with the other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. It must be hard to move to a new school, Jackson thought. He decided to give it one more try and let him be his friend. What would be a better one? He paced backwards and forwards nervously.
It was at that time that Jackson reached into his pocket and pulled out two toy cars that his brother gave him before. His brother has tons of cars and always gives him his old ones. It was the two cars that made him give it one more try.

They sat on the ground, discussed the car’s types and appearance and rolled the cars across the rock, making a car noise as they did. Billy expressed his apology to his previous rejections and showed great thanks to Jackson’s inviting him to play. He told Jackson he had a hard time making friends.
“Well, you made one friend today,” Jackson said. Hearing that, Billy’s eyes were widely open because he couldn’t believe what had happened. And then his smile lit up the whole ground and he shook hands with Jackson tightly. At last Jackson invited Billy to come to his house and see other cars .Jackson was also happy that he did not give up one more try and finally made a new friend. He thought they were going to be best friends.
