To most Scots, the name “Eric Liddell” needs no introduction. His story has become part of national legend. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, Liddell won gold in the men’s 400 meters, setting a new Olympic and world record. A century later, he remains one of Scotland’s most admired sports figures.
After the Paris Olympics, Liddell made a choice that again surprised many. He returned to Tianjin, the northern Chinese city. He was born there and spent his early years before returning to Britain. In Tianjin, he taught at a college and helped design and promote the Minyuan Stadium. Modeled after London’s Stamford Bridge, the stadium became one of Asia’s most advanced sporting venues (场所) of its time.
When Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China in 1937, Liddell chose not to leave. Instead, he moved to Hebei Province, where he taught villagers. By 1941, as conflict became tense, he made the painful decision to send his pregnant wife and their two young daughters to safety in Canada, while he stayed behind. He had secretly transported money by hiding it inside hollowed-out bread. This simple but effective trick enabled him to deliver vital funds to Chinese families in hardship.
In 1943, Liddell was imprisoned by Japanese forces in Weihlsen (now Weifang city in Shandong Province) along with nearly 2,000 other Western civilians. There, he became known as “Uncle Eric”. He taught science using scraps of paper, organized games, and repaired sports equipment — even fixed hockey sticks for the children. He helped the elderly, shared his food, and even gave away his prized running shoes to those in greater need.
Tragically, he died of a brain disease in 1945 at the age of 43, just months before the camp was freed. In 1988, a memorial (纪念碑) was unveiled at his grave in Weifang with the words: “He shall fly as eagles; he shall run and not be tired.”
4. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A. Eric Liddell was born in Britain and grew up in Tianjin.
B. Eric Liddell designed the Minyuan Stadium by himself.
C. The Minyuan Stadium was the most advanced venue in Asia.
D. Eric Liddell returned to Tianjin after the 1924 Paris Olympics.
5. Why were his family sent to Canada?
A. To avoid the conflict in China.
B. To better support Chinese families.
C. To find a better job in Canada.
D. To have a family reunion later in Canada.
6. Which can best describe Eric Liddell?
A. Humble and humorous.
B. Responsible and courageous.
C. Hardworking and honest.
D. Loyal and clever.
7. What is the meaning of the words on Eric’s memorial?
A. Eric liked playing with wild animals.
B. Eric devoted himself to physical exercises.
C. Eric helped others and would never give up.
D. Eric was a fighter against diseases in his lifetime.

Free Wi-Fi has become incredibly important to us: many stores and shopping malls offer it, restaurants use it to attract customers, and for libraries and coffee shops it is a must-have service.
Even when people are traveling, they scan for free Wi-Fi, which, according to research released by London’s Amba Hotel on Dec 4, has become the most important standard for choosing a hotel.
According to the survey, as many as 67 percent of travelers questioned said that free Wi-Fi would make them more likely to choose accommodation, above other things such as the hotel’s location and friendly staff. When rating a hotel that they’d already stayed in, six in ten travelers believed that unlimited Wi-Fi was the most important factor in their choice.
“Today, people treat their smartphones, tablets (平板电脑) and laptops like clothes when they are about to travel to some places. They will never forget to pack it into the suitcase,” said the Daily Mail. “We rely on free Wi-Fi heavily when traveling — especially when it comes to checking social media, searching for travel tips, and accessing websites.”
However, despite the opportunities that free Wi-Fi gives us, “our over-reliance on technology has come at a price, with travelers feeling unable to escape social media”, said Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide brand.
Anita Isalska, Lonely Planet editor and tech addict, was forced to unplug when she was stuck in an isolated (与世隔绝的) camp in Greenland recently. “Adjusting to this slower pace, I began to realize: somewhere, somehow, social media had changed into a reflex (条件反射),” she wrote. “I had believed I was capturing moments, but in reality my busy thumbs (拇指) were preventing me from enjoying travel’s most profound (深远的) pleasures. How fully can you appreciate a huge glacier or grassland of wildflowers when your brain is subconsciously (下意识地) selecting the right photo filter (滤镜), or the perfect six seconds to film?”
In September, the brand released 10 predictions for the future of global travel. One of them was that true escapes will be highly valued in future, so remote hotels will start to make their lack of Internet into a feature. Would you like to have an unplugged holiday?
8. What is important for travelers to select a hotel?
A. Location B. Service C. Free WiFi D. Price
9. What does the underlined word “unplug” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Check social media. B. Disconnect from digital devices.
C. Appreciate beautiful scenery. D. Cancel a travelling plan.
10. What is the lesson Anita Isalska learned from the isolated camp?
A. Travelers should adapt to a slower pace when checking social media.
B. Travelers should take more photos and videos during their journeys.
C. Addiction (瘾) to social media has negatively affected the quality of travel.
D. Beautiful scenery could be appreciated better if films are shot cautiously
11. What is the main idea of the passage ?
A. Free Wifi is harmful to our life.
B. People rely heavily on free WiFi but begin to realize the importance of an “unplugged holiday”
C. Hotels compete with each other by offering free WiFi..
D. Social media makes people enjoy travel more fully.

A biologist once criticized (批评) for stealing eggs from the nests of the rarest bird in the world has been awarded the “Nobel Prize” of conservation after his methods saved nine species from extinction.
Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize — the highest honor in the field of animal conservation — for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel from becoming the next Great Auk.
When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s, he was told to close down a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest bird on Earth. However, he stayed, using the techniques of captive breeding (人工繁殖), which involved snatching (抢夺) eggs from the birds’ nests and hatching (孵化) them under incubators (恒温箱), prompting (促使) the mothers to lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared (急升) to over 300 and today there are around 400 in the wild. The biologist has also been necessary in efforts to bring other rare species back from the edge of extinction, including the pink pigeon, echo parakeet and Rodrigues warbler.
Prof Jones was awarded the $250,000 (£172,000) prize at a ceremony in London.
“As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn’t enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I received,” reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Maurutius kestrel project had been seen as a “dead loss” at the time. In the 1970s there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics arguing that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
Prof Jones has devoted his whole life to his work, only becoming a father for the first time eight years ago, at 53. He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him, because it proved that his work to save birds was right.
12. Why the biologist was awarded the “Nobel Prize”?
A. He criticized the action of stealing eggs B. He studied the rarest bird
C. His contribution to saving nine species from extinction D. He is a great biologist
13. According to the passage, Great Auk is ________.
A. an endangered bird B. an extinct bird C. a popular bird D. a fierce bird
14. What can we know from the figures in Paragraph 4?
A. The technique of captive breeding has worked well.
B. The wild environment for kestrel has changed a lot.
C. Kestrel has adapted to the life in the wild.
D. It’s difficult to protect kestrel.
15. Prof Jones’ idea of taking eggs from the birds’ nests ________.
A. was proved of no use B. was widely accepted
C. was promoted officially D. was criticized by some people

Ms. Carter’s classroom was always warm, even in winter. The walls were covered with student essays and faded world maps. 14-year-old Jamie sat in the back row, his head hanging low and eyes fixed on his worn shoes. He hadn’t turned in his assignments for several days.
“Stay after class, Jamie,” Ms. Carter said softly one December afternoon. Her voice wasn’t angry — just worried. “I know you’re capable,” she said, sliding his blank notebook across the desk. “But you’ve missed every deadline. Is there anything wrong?”
Jamie, struggling with something he couldn’t express, held back his words and remained silent. Outside, raindrops tapped the windows like impatient fingers.
The next day, Ms. Carter drove to Jamie’s home after school. As she knocked on a half-open door, she heard a child’s cry. Jamie answered her knock. He was so surprised to see Ms. Carter, his face red with panic. A baby girl was on his back, and an oxygen machine hummed (嗡嗡响) beside a sofa where a weak woman slept.
“My mom... she has pneumonia (肺炎),” Jamie explained in a low voice, blocking the doorway. “I have to take care of my sister after school. The daycare kicked her out last month because Mom missed payments. You see, she can’t go to work now.”
Ms. Carter’s throat tightened. She noticed the microwave meals piled on the table. A photo on the fridge showed Jamie wearing a big smile, his mother’s arms around him — a lifetime ago.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You’d think I’m lying.” he said, voice shaking. “But... I’ll catch up on my study, I promise.”
That evening, after returning home, Ms. Carter contacted a charity organization in the town and explained the family’s difficult situation. The organization readily promised to help Jamie and his family. The next day, the head of the organization came to the school with funds in an envelope, which were enough to cover the expenses of daycare for at least one month.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要探讨免费Wi-Fi对人们旅行选择酒店的重要影响,以及过度依赖它带来的问题,引出对“无网络假期”的思考。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“According to the survey, as many as 67 percent of travelers questioned said that free Wi-Fi would make them more likely to choose accommodation, above other things such as the hotel’s location and friendly staff. When rating a hotel that they’d already stayed in, six in ten travelers believed that unlimited Wi-Fi was the most important factor in their choice.(根据调查,多达67% 的被调查旅行者表示,免费Wi-Fi会让他们更倾向于选择该住宿,这一因素超过了酒店位置和友好的员工等其他因素。在对他们已经入住过的酒店进行评价时,十分之六的旅行者认为无限网络是他们做出选择时最重要的因素。)”可知,对于旅行者选择酒店来说,免费Wi-Fi是重要因素。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段中的“our over-reliance on technology has come at a price, with travelers feeling unable to escape social media(我们对技术的过度依赖付出了代价,旅行者们感觉无法摆脱社交媒体)”以及第六段中的“Adjusting to this slower pace, I began to realize: somewhere, somehow, social media had changed into a reflex(条件反射)(适应这种较慢的节奏时,我开始意识到:不知在何处、不知怎地,社交媒体已经变成了一种条件反射)”可知,Anita Isalska被困在与世隔绝的营地时,不得不脱离对社交媒体等数字设备的过度依赖,去适应一种较慢的节奏,所以“unplug”意思是与数字设备断开连接。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“I had believed I was capturing moments, but in reality my busy thumbs (拇指) were preventing me from enjoying travel’s most profound (深远的) pleasures. How fully can you appreciate a huge glacier or grassland of wildflowers when your brain is subconsciously (下意识地) selecting the right photo filter (滤镜), or the perfect six seconds to film?’(我原以为自己在捕捉瞬间,但实际上我忙碌的拇指阻碍了我享受旅行中最深刻的乐趣。

C. was promoted officially D. was criticized by some people
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The Internet: A Double-Edged Sword
Nowadays, the internet plays an indispensable role in our lives. On the one hand, it brings significant benefits. Firstly, it allows us to access vast information and knowledge instantly, greatly enhancing learning efficiency. Secondly, online communication tools like social media bridge distances, making global interaction convenient and affordable. On the other hand, the internet has drawbacks. Excessive use may lead to addiction, distracting people from studies or work. For example, some spend hours on games or videos, neglecting responsibilities.
In my view, the internet itself is neutral. Its impact depends on how we use it. By exercising self-discipline and setting clear goals, we can harness its advantages while avoiding its pitfalls. Only by using it wisely can we truly benefit from this powerful tool.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ms. Carter called Jamie to the office.

After school, Jamie got home and handed the envelope to his mom.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Ms. Carter called Jamie to the office. Sunlight pooled around the envelope as Ms. Carter pushed it toward Jamie. “This will settle the problem.” she said, her eyes reflecting the hopes in the young boy and his family. Jamie’s fingertips brushed the seal — thicker than his math textbook — where the charity’s name shone. His throat tightened, tears clouded with tears. “Thank you Ms. Carter. I didn’t expect...” Ms. Carter patted Jamie on the shoulder and smiled, “I believe you and your family will get through this soon.” Biting his lips, Jamie nodded.
After school, Jamie got home and handed the envelope to his mom. The envelope felt so heavy in Mom’s trembling hands. “They’re... like angels?” Mom’s whisper melted all the messes in the house. The money meant so much to them. With the medicine bought and the baby taken care of, Jamie’s mom was recovering day by day. That night, Jamie’s pencil moved freely across homework for the first time in weeks, its shadow dancing alongside mom’s steady breathing on the monitor. When Jamie finally handed his homework to Ms. Carter, the classroom hummed with life, no longer just warmth, but light.
