Answer the questions.
1.Why does the writer describe the problem as “the time-eating
monster”?
Because spending too much time on games, social media and TV shows eats up our time without us noticing, just like a monster.
2.What other expressions can you think of to describe the
problem?
“The time-stealing thief” or “the time-wasting devil”.
Think and Share
1.Which “time-eating monsters” might be in people’s pockets, in their living rooms, or on their desks?
They might be mobile phones (in pockets), TVs (in living rooms), and computers (on desks). These things can make people waste much time in an unnoticeable way, just like the “time - eating monster” described in the text.
Learning to think for question 1
While reading a passage, we can connect our own life experiences to the ideas in it. Think about some similar situations, events or
emotions. This helps us understand the theme better.
2.Why do you think we like these “time-eating monsters” so much?
Because they are really interesting and can bring us a lot of fun. For example, games on smartphones are exciting and make us forget about time. Also, TV shows can make us relax and enjoy different stories.
3.Do you think people spend more time on these “monsters”
nowadays?Why or why not?
Yes, I think people spend more time on these “monsters” nowadays. Because nowadays there are all kinds of interesting games and apps on smartphones, and there are also many good TV shows and online videos. People can get them easily whenever they want. And after a busy day at work or school, people often use these things to relax and kill time. So they spend more time on them than before.
No, I don’t think people spend more time on these “monsters”. Because now people are getting busier with their studies or jobs. They have a lot of tasks to do and don’t have much free time left. Even though these things are interesting, they can’t always play with them or watch them. So they actually spend less time on these “monsters” compared to before.
Write a short paragraph about having fun in a balanced way.
