Unit 8 Making a Difference Section B How does helping others make a difference? (1a-1e) & Vocabulary in Use Learning Objectives In this lesson you will: 1. get the main idea and the target information from the speech. 2. identify key features of a speech by analyzing the structure and language. 3. gain awareness of the value of volunteer work (like Blue Sky Rescue) and learn to express positive attitudes towards helping others. Watch and Say Watch the video and answer the questions. What happened to the city in the video? Who are the people in the blue uniforms? What are they doing? What do you think of them? A terrible earthquake hit the city in Turkey. They are members of the Blue Sky Rescue Team from China. They are helping out with the disaster relief. I think they are brave, selfless, professional... What do you know about Blue Sky Rescue? The Blue Sky Rescue Team is a non-profit volunteer organization in China, focusing on disaster relief and emergency rescue. The team is made up of volunteers. These are ordinary people like students, doctors, and office workers who help in their free time. It was founded in 2007 and has branches across China, with members having professional rescue skills. The team also conducts community safety education and searches for missing persons, all done by unpaid volunteers. Look at the pictures of some Blue Sky Rescue volunteers and discuss the questions. 1. What do you think the volunteers in blue are doing? 2. Have you heard any stories about Blue Sky Rescue? In the picture a and picture c, the volunteers are conducting rescue operations during the disasters. In the picture b, they are conducting safety education and training for the children. 1a Identifying the features of a speech A speech can start with a hook to make the audience curious about what the speaker will say next. A story, an interesting fact, or even a question can be a hook. A speech can also include a call to action by encouraging people to do something. Hook: A "hook" is like a magnet at the start of a speech. It grabs the audience’s attention —make them think "Wow, I want to hear more!" Call to Action: At the end, the speaker says "Hey, you! Do something!", like asking people to join, help, or change. Speech Hook Ideas A question A quote(引述) A statistic(数据) A personal story Reference to current or historical events Humor Read the speech by a Blue Sky Rescue volunteer. What kind of hook does the speaker use? Which paragraph includes a call to action? The speaker uses a personal story hook. The speaker shares his own experience of being rescued by Blue Sky Rescue in 2008, which grabs the audience’s attention by connecting emotionally and introducing the topic. 1b The last paragraph includes the call to action. Think and Share Why does the speaker use a personal story as a hook? Would a fact or question hook work better? Why/why not? Because it makes the audience feel emotional. It shows why the rescue team is important to him personally, making us trust and care about his message more. It's like he is sharing a powerful memory, not just giving information. No, a personal story works best for this speech. A fact (e.g., "Blue Sky Rescue has saved 10,000 people.") is interesting but not emotional. A question (e.g., "Have you ever needed help?") is good, but not as powerful as a real story. Read the speech again. Write the correct paragraph number next to each paragraph summary. The speaker shares what he has learnt from his volunteer experience. The speaker tells a story about how he got to know Blue Sky Rescue. The speaker invites the audience to volunteer with Blue Sky Rescue. The speaker greets the audience and thanks them. The speaker talks about the work the Blue Sky Rescue volunteers have done. _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ 4 2 5 1 3 1c Read again and answer the questions. 1. When did the speaker join Blue Sky Rescue? Why did he join the organization? 2. What has he learnt from his volunteer experience? He joined Blue Sky Rescue in 2009. He joined it because in 2008, the team helped him and his hurt friend in the mountains. He was so thankful that he wanted to help others too. He has learnt many practical life-saving skills, understood the power of teamwork (which is key to successful rescues), and realized the value of every life. 1d 3. What are some difficulties the Blue Sky Rescue volunteers face? 4. Why is the speaker willing to put his life in danger? The work is very hard and they are not paid. They often don't have enough food or sleep and they often have to work in dangerous situations. Because he wants to save as many people as possible, and he knows that to the people they’ve saved and their loved ones, they are heroes, which makes everything worth it. 5. What qualities do you think a Blue Sky Rescue volunteer should have? I think they should be brave and smart to face danger. be kind and selfless to help others. have teamwork spirit. be willing to learn new skills. have a sense of responsibility. be strong and never give up. ... Structure & Language Analysis Identify the timeline of events the speaker mentions. 2008: He was hiking when his friend got injured, and they were rescued by Blue Sky Rescue. 2009: He signed up as a volunteer with Blue Sky Rescue. 2013: They provided aid after the Ya'an earthquake and a typhoon in the Philippines. 2023: They helped in Turkiye. How does this timeline help organize the content? The timeline acts like a clear and simple path for the audience to follow. It shows a clear "Before and After": Before (2008): He was someone who needed help. After (2009-2023): He became someone who gives help. This change makes his story powerful and shows his strong personal connection to the team's mission. It also helps the audience understand the development and impact of Blue Sky Rescue. How many main parts can you divide the speech into? What is the focus of each part? Part 2: Part 1: The personal story. (The hook.) To grab the audience's attention and explain WHY he joined Blue Sky Rescue. Part 2: The Volunteer Work & Lessons (The Body)  To describe WHAT he does as a volunteer and WHAT he has learned from the experience. Part 3: The Call to Action (The Conclusion) To inspire the audience and ask them TO DO SOMETHING. Try to summarize the language features of the speech using the following questions. What are the emotional words that show the speaker’s feelings? How do these words make the speech more powerful? Does the speaker use mostly simple or complex words? Why is this good for a speech? Does the speaker use short sentences or long sentences more? How does this affect the tone? Features of the language: Use emotional words that show true feelings to make the speech powerful and memorable. Use simple words to make the message clear and strong. Use short and powerful sentences to make the key points stand out and easy to remember. Repeat key words to make the main ideas stick in the listeners’ mind. Ends with a direct call to action How do you understand the sentences below? Discuss your opinions in groups. 1e When you help someone, you also feel happy and good about yourself. Helping others is like practicing. You learn new skills and become a better person. If you help people, they may help you when you need it in the future. ... Help others, help yourself. It means we should help each other because everyone needs help sometimes. If I help you today, maybe you will help me another day. It's about being kind and creating a cycle of help and support. ... Today you, tomorrow me. The rose in your hand, the sweet smell in mine. When you give something beautiful (like a rose) to others, you also get something good in return (the sweet smell). The "rose" can be help, kindness, or love. When you share it, you also feel happy and warm inside. Helping others brings joy to both the person you help and to you. ... Language Points 1.
