Unit 4 The Wonders of Nature Section A What is amazing about nature? (2a-2d) Learning Objectives In this lesson you will: 1.identify what topics about the deep sea are discussed in the conversation. 2.learn some interesting facts about the deep sea. 3.talk about what you have learned about the deep sea and arouse interest in deep-sea exploration. Look and Say The ocean is divided into different zones according to depth. Do you know the depth of each zone? Sunlight Zone It is the "top floor" in the Ocean. The average depth is 200 meters. It is the smallest ocean zone. It receives the most light out of all the zones. Most of the ocean life is found here. Twilight Zone The depth range is about 200 to 1000 meters. Light here is very faint, like during twilight. In the zone, we start to see the twinkling lights from bioluminescent creatures(发光生物). There are many kinds of strange and odd-looking fishes here. Midnight Zone It's from 1000 to 4000 meters deep in the ocean. There's no light at all here—totally dark, like midnight. The temperature is nearly freezing and pressure is extremely high. Some unique and weird-looking sea animals live here. What do you know about the deep sea? Complete the sentences with the information from the picture. 1. Fendouzhe reached ______. 2. The deep sea begins at ______. 3. The Titanic rests at ______. 4. A whale can dive to ______. 2a D A C B Fendouzhe (奋斗者号) Fendouzhe is a super advanced deep-sea submersible(潜水器) made by China. It can carry scientists down to the deepest parts of the ocean, like the Mariana Trench. In 2020, it successfully reached the bottom of the trench, over 10,000 meters deep! It helps us explore the mysterious deep sea, discover new creatures, and learn more about our planet. /səbˈmɜːrsəbl/ Titanic (泰坦尼克号) The Titanic was a famous British passenger ship built over 100 years ago. It was once called "unsinkable" because it was very large and had many safety features for its time. In April 1912, it set off on its first trip from the UK to the US, carrying more than 2,200 people. Sadly, it hit a big iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and sank quickly. A class is asking a deep-sea researcher some questions after his talk. Listen and tick the topics they discuss. What information can we get from the instruction? Who are talking in the conversation? What happened before the conversation? Students and a deep-sea researcher. The deep-sea researcher gave a talk to students. 2b where the deep sea begins why people are researching the deep sea which Chinese submersible dived deeper in the water than many others what deep-sea animals are like how everyone should protect the deep sea Listen and tick the topics they discuss. 1. People still don't know much about the _____________. 2. In _____________, China's Fendouzhe dived into the deep sea and filmed it. 3. Some animals have unusual abilities. Some are_____________ but can “see”. Some can even create their own_______. 4. There is rubbish even at _____________ metres deep. Listen again. Complete the sentences with the facts from the conversation. ocean floor 2020 blind light 11,000 2c Listening Scripts Ms Gao: Thank you for the wonderful talk, Mr Jones. Now, does anyone have any questions? Emma: I do! Why are so many countries researching the deep sea? Mr Jones: Well, curiosity is one reason. We don't know enough about the ocean floor. Fu Xing: I remember that in 2020, China's Fendouzhe dived deeper into the Mariana Trench than many other submersibles in the world and filmed it. But I didn't see any deep-sea animals. What are they like? Listen and repeat. Pay attention to the expressions in bold. Mr Jones: Well, many deep-sea animals are large and unusual. Some animals are blind, but they can "see" as well as others. Some even create their own light! Peter: Cool! Are there any other surprising facts about the deep sea? Mr Jones: Did you know that there's rubbish even at 11,000 metres deep? That shocked many people. Ms Gao: That's terrible! We should do something about it. Mr Jones: You're right! Useful Expressions China's Fendouzhe dived deeper into the Mariana Trench than many other vessels in the world. Some animals are blind, but they can "see" as well as others. 比较级+ than 意为“比……更……” as ... as 意为“和……一样……” Pair Work Read the questions and think of more you would like to ask the deep-sea researcher. Research the answers. Then ask and answer the questions with a partner. What is the largest shark in the deep sea? What is the bottom of the deep sea like? Why is it important to research the deep sea? 2d The Greenland Shark is the largest shark in the deep sea. They are massive, slow-moving sharks that can live for hundreds of years and are often found in the cold, deep waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic. They can grow over 6 meters long. The bottom of the deep sea is completely dark because sunlight cannot reach it. The temperature is near freezing. The water pressure is immense (巨大的), enough to crush most submarines (潜艇). Much of it is covered in soft, fine mud called "ooze(软泥)." The deep sea is important for Earth and humans in many ways. Climate Regulation: The deep ocean absorbs and stores large amounts of heat and carbon dioxide, helping to regulate the Earth's climate. Source of Resources: It has valuable resources like rare metals, natural gas, and even new medicines. Biodiversity: The deep sea is home to millions of unique species. ...
