Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese culture and plan to visit China during the summer vacation. I’m sure you will have a great time here. I’d be happy to provide you with some recommendations and advice to enhance your experience in China.
As for must-see attractions, I highly recommend the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors. The Great Wall, a World Heritage Site, impresses with its grand ancient architecture and breathtaking mountain views. The Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, with life-sized clay soldiers and horses, offers a vivid look into China’s Qin Dynasty civilization.
To adapt better, read a brief Chinese history book beforehand and learn simple phrases like “hello” and “thank you”. Also, get used to drinking hot water—it’s a common habit here.
I’d love to have you at my home! My mom will cook Peking roast duck, juicy Kung Pao chicken and dumplings—all classic Chinese dishes you’ll surely enjoy.
I hope my recommendations and suggestions can help you have a memorable and wonderful trip to China.
Yours,
Li Hua

At thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”
She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are no different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didnˈt finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldnˈt get much education. But Louis didnˈt give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasnˈt I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?
I didnˈt expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”
24.The author didnˈt finish the reading in class because ______.
A. he was new to the class B. he was tired of literature
C. he had an attention disorder D. he wanted to take the task home
25.What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?
A. He had good sight. B. He made a great invention.
C. He gave up reading. D. He learned a lot from school.
26.What was Mrs. Smithˈs attitude to the author at the end of the story?
A. Angry. B. Impatient. C. Sympathetic. D. Encouraging.
27.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The disabled should be treated with respect.
B. A teacher can open up a new world to students.
C. One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.
D. Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges.
【答案】C、B、D、C
24.根据第一段第一句“At thirteen, I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder”可知作者被诊断出注意力紊乱,故选C。
25. 根据第五段中的“It was about a blind person, Louise Braile”和“Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind”可知,Louise Braile是个盲人,创造了盲文,故选B。
26. 根据最后一段中的“so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an ‘Aˈ on it”可知,当我看到作业上的A时,非常吃惊,由此可知史密斯太太对“我”的态度是鼓舞人心的,故选D。
C
Binge-watching (追剧) your favorite TV series is bad for your brain. Dr. Randall Wright, based in Texas, said the need to watch episode (集) after episode has a similar influence on the brain to gambling (赌博). Whatˈs more, it often leads to social loneliness, snacking on junk food and a shortage of exercise and sleep, which, over time, is bad for the brain.
When you let auto play start the next episode, you can find out what happens next and your brain receives good feedback, Dr. Wright wrote in an article. This right-away satisfaction is similar to gambling where even after a win, you are not satisfied and want to continue playing. With binge-watching, you are not satisfied with stopping after episode five and want to continue watching. This cycle coupled with the snacking and the long time sitting can lead to unhealthy changes in your brain and body over time.
Dr. Wright said, “Binge-watching itself is not bad. It becomes problematic when you are watching a third, fourth or fifth episode instead of doing healthy activities.” But he said it is possible to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching with four tips, including staying away from salty, fatty, calorific foods, exercising before binge-watching, setting an alarm for sleep and balancing TV viewing with socializing.
If you add these tips to your binge-watching practice, you can create lasting healthy habits and still enjoy the now-and-then binge-watching time without hurting your brain.
28.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Gambling. B. Binge-watching. C. A TV series. D. Brain.
29.In what way is binge-watching like gambling?
A. The long time sitting. B. The changes of feeling.
C. The snacking on junk food. D. The immediate satisfaction.
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The tips on how to develop a healthy lifestyle.
B. The reasons why binge-watching is problematic.
C. The ways to keep away from binge-watching.
D. The suggestions on how to avoid the bad influence of binge-watching.
31.What may be the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time: More Harm than Good
B. Healthy Habits: A Must of a Better Life
C. Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. TV-viewing: Gradual Harm on Your Health
【答案】B、D、D、C

D
If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch a performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d travel far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed attractive. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best-known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and many comic book adaptations. It contributes to the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally referred to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks (裂缝) in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts (捷径) to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme conditions. And Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship, going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship wouldn’t of course be simple.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?
And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then travels 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacle (触角).
If that’s what’s in store (即将到来), maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
32.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The stories of time travel have only been popular in recent years.
B.The “time machine” is a vehicle transporting people to everywhere.
C.The Time Machine by Wells has been adapted into different forms.
D.Some scientists generally believe time travel is physically possible.
33.What do some scientists advise using for time travel theoretically?
A.Blackholes. B.Wormholes.
C.Ordinary spaceships. D.Extreme conditions.
34.What does “grandfather paradox” in paragraph 4 indicate?
A.The reunion of the time traveler and his grandfather brings happiness.
B.The time traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather.
C.The grandfather’s death makes the time traveler’s birth impossible.
D.The time traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards time travel based on the passage?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear.
C.Neutral. D.Supportive.
【答案】32.C 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第二段中“Perhaps the best-known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and many comic book adaptations.(也许最著名的例子是科幻小说《时间机器》,由H. G. Wells撰写,出版于1895年。它被改编成至少两部同名电影,以及两部电视版本和许多漫画书)”可知,Wells写的《时间机器》被改编成不同的形式,故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks (裂缝) in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts (捷径) to other periods.(但是时间旅行真的可能吗?一些科学家在理论上说是的。他们建议在时空中使用被称为“虫洞”的裂缝,这可以作为通往其他时期的捷径)”可知,一些科学家建议使用“虫洞”从理论上进行时间旅行,故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?(即使你能穿越到过去,也存在所谓的“祖父悖论”。它问的是,出于某种原因导致自己的祖父死亡,从而阻止了自己的出生,那么会发生什么?如果这位时间旅行者从未出生,他又如何能回到过去呢?)”可知,“grandfather paradox”提出的观点就是:祖父死亡导致时间旅行者无法出生。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据第四段提到“祖父悖论”使得时间旅行有可能不能实现、第五段中“In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then travels 30million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacle (触角).(在H. G. Wells的书中,主人公穿越到遥远的时间,来到一个海滩,遭到了巨蟹的袭击。然后他穿越到3000万年后的未来,那里唯一的生物是一个长着触手的黑色物体)”以H.G.威尔斯的书为例,表明即使回到过去也有可能遭遇险境,结合最后一段“If that’s what’s in store (即将到来), maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.(如果这是未来可能发生的事,也许我们最好还是活在当下)”可推知,作者对时间旅行持怀疑态度,故选A。

Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese culture and plan to visit China during the summer vacation.

A.Screen Time: More Harm than Good
B. Healthy Habits: A Must of a Better Life
C. Binge-watching: A Killer of Your Brain
D. TV-viewing: Gradual Harm on Your Health
