Have you ever been to Iceland? How about Norway or Finland? Maybe you've travelled to northern Russia or Canada. These are some of the best places to see one of our planet's most beautiful natural phenomena(现象). What are we talking about? The Northern Lights(北极光), of course!
The Northern Lights appear as beautiful colours in the night sky. The most common colour of the Northern Lights is green. However, they can also be red, pink, yellow, or purple.
What causes the Northern Lights? Like all the natural light on the earth, they come from the sun. Sometimes, the sun has big storms and gives off electrically charged particles(带电粒子). When the electrically charged particles reach the earth, some of them pass through to the air around our planet. They then collide(碰撞)with the gases(气体)around the earth, which causes beautiful lights with colours.
The colours of the Northern Lights have to do with the height. For example, when electrically charged particles collide with gases less than 150 miles from the earth's surface, they produce green light. When the collision happens higher than 150 miles, they make red light.
Over time, many people have tried to explain the Northern Lights. Some cultures have ancient stories about them. Today, however, we know the science behind the Northern Lights, and people travel thousands of miles each year hoping to see them. Many say it's a magical experience!

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system. It is over 2,600 kilometres long. You can even see it all the way from outer space. The reef is home to many animals: fish, birds, turtles, sharks and even whales. 1. __
Climate change, overfishing, tropical storms and water pollution make the reef in great danger. Coral reef experts at Australian universities say that if we do nothing to stop it, the coral reef could be destroyed before 2030.
2.__ Everyday things like driving cars, using electricity(电)and running a factory create greenhouse gases(温室气体)that go into the air. These gases make Earth warmer. This is a problem for the Great Barrier Reef and other reefs around the world.
Coral is very fragile(脆弱的). Even a 2degree going up in water temperature is enough to kill it, according to Ove HoeghGuldberg, a reef researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia. 3. __
But it's not only the coral that's in danger. Onequarter of all sea life lives on coral reefs. If air pollution is not slowed down or stopped, then the water will warm by at least 3 degrees in the next 20 years, according to reef experts in a recent report from the University of Queensland. 4. __
A.If the water temperature doesn't go down, the coral will die.
B.Unluckily, the reef that all these animals call home is in danger.
C.This would mean the end for the Great Barrier Reef and all its sea life.
D.But if you didn't go there before, you'd better go soon before it's too late.
E.Most scientists agree that humans are the main reason of climate change.

(沈阳期中)Saihanba is a forest park in the north of Hebei. It is about 400 km from Beijing. For hundreds of years, the emperors went there to hunt. In the 1800s, things began to change. There were forest fires and wars, and people cut too many trees. Saihanba slowly turned into a desert.
When the forest disappeared, there were terrible sandstorms in the Beijing area. In the early 1960s, a group of scientists travelled to Saihanba to find a solution. They found an old tree in the middle of the desert. “Maybe we can still plant trees here,” they thought. In 1962, the first tree planters arrived in Saihanba. The cold and dry weather made their work very difficult, and strong winds blew away many young trees. In winter, it got as cold as -40℃.
Three generations(代)of forest workers continued the hard work. Thanks to them, Saihanba is green again. It is today the world's biggest manmade forest. There are hundreds of millions of trees there. The forest helps provide the capital with clean water, and there are fewer sandstorms in the Beijing area now.
1.What is Saihanba?
_____________________________________
2.Who discovered an old tree in the desert at Saihanba?
______________________
3.When did the first tree planters arrive in Saihanba?
________
4.What do you think of the forest workers? Why? Write 20 words or more.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I think forest workers are great. Because they overcame many difficulties and planted many trees. They made a huge contribution to the environment.
People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32℉(华氏温度), at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30℉.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on 8th March, 1909.It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极圈)on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place. People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard.
However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water(水道)called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

( )2.What does the underlined word “uninhabited” mean in Chinese?
