2015 Passage D 塔斯马尼亚虎(动物科普)
原文
The origins of this website,tasmanian-tiger.com, go back to 1978 when we, Buck and Joan Emberg, saw Tasmanian tigers. We called the Department of Parks and Wildlife people and were told not to tell anyone. They said everyone would then be going through the bush tiger-hunting.
We accepted what they said. Then we found what we thought might be tiger droppings near our house. Excitedly we took them to Hobart, our capital city, and presented our “prize” to an official. He took the droppings and threw it carelessly into a drawer. The result of that action, of course, was the destruction of any scientific evidence.
Later, we thought we found some tiger prints. The local newspaper published the story and, like most people who admitted they saw a tiger in the wild, we received no respect. That’s why we began to set up the website. Now we can use new technologies and are hopeful in proving the animal's existence before the animal's home is threatened.

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the moon, some planets, and thousands of shining stars. You can see even more with a telescope.
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won't see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. They're dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn't seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a star's gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.
As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, it ends up as a cold, dark ball. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it's packed together tighter than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny stone. That's how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It's the same force that pulls you down when you jump—the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity pulls in everything even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That's why you see nothing but blackness.
题目
39. When will a star begin to die?
A. When it burns brightly.
B. When it becomes too hot.
C. When it runs out of its gases.
D. When it gives off light and heat
40. What do we know about black holes?
A. They are nice to watch at night.
B. They have strong pulling force.
C. They are heavier than the sun.
D. They form the outer parts of sun.
41. What will happen when a star cools?
A. It has a hole inside.
B. It grows heavier.
C. It loses its gravity.
D. It grows smaller

The oldest flute ever discovered may be the so-called Divje Babe flute, found in Slovenia in 1995. It is not certain whether the object is truly a musical instrument or simply a bone.
In 2008, scientists discovered a bone flute in a cave in Germany. The five-holed flute has a V-shaped mouthpiece and is made from a wing bone. The researchers involved in the discovery officially published their findings in Nature, in June 2009. The discovery is also the oldest confirmed find of any musical instrument in history.
The oldest known wooden pipes were discovered near Greystones, Ireland, in 2004. A large wood-lined hole in the ground contained a group of six flutes made from wood, between 30 and 50 cm long, narrowed at one end, but without any finger holes.
In 1986 several bone flutes were found in Jiahu in Henan Province, China. They date back to about 6,000 BC. They have between 5 and 8 holes each and were made from the hollow bones of a bird. At the time of the discovery one was found to be still playable.

2017 Passage C 爵士乐起源(音乐科普)
原文
Jazz is type of music that was invented around 1900 in New Orleans in the south of the USA. There are many black musicians living there who played a style of music called blues music. Influenced by African music, blues music was a music that was played by singing, using the harmonica, or the acoustic guitar. Many blues songs were about sad feelings or sad experiences, such as losing a job, a family member dying, or having to go to prison.
Jazz music mixed blues music with European music. Some black composers such as Scott Joplin were writing music called ragtime, which is very different from standard European music, but used notes that were similar to some European music. Ragtime had a big influence on early Jazz. The players of jazz make up the music as they play. Even though jazz musicians are making up the music, jazz music still has rules.
Jazz influenced other types of music like the Western art music from the 1920s and 1930s. Art music composers such as George Gershwin wrote music that was influenced by Jazz. One of the best known jazz musicians was Louis Armstrong (1900-1971).

Jaguar numbers have dropped very fast in the last hundred years. The main cause for this drop is people.
Jaguars once lived from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico all the way to southern Argentina. Since 1900, the land for jaguars has dropped by more than half. Today, wild jaguar families no longer live in the United States.
Gunshot wounds are the main causes of jaguar deaths. Jaguars sometimes kill cattle. As a result, farmers shoot jaguars to protect their animals.
If there is enough wild prey, jaguars seem to prefer to eat wild animals, such as deer.
Jaguars are also in danger because people cut down trees for farms and cities. This has destroyed jaguar habitat. Scientists believe that the key for jaguars to survive is to live together peacefully with people.

Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They make you uncomfortable. Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, they make a film over the eye’s surface. This film protects your eyes.
When tears fall, they can make people feel less stressed or anxious; but we tend to fight them. “People worry about showing their emotions, afraid that once they lose control they’ll never get it back,” explains Doctor Dorothy Rowe. “As children we might have been punished for crying; as grown-ups we still fear showing emotions.” After we cry, the feelings that caused the tears often disappear.
Almost any emotion can bring on tears. Crying is an escape for built-up emotions. Tears help you when you feel ready to explode because of very strong feelings.

If a baseball is pitched at 85 miles per hour, and a batter hits at 86 miles per hour, then the perfectly hit ball will travel about 450 feet. If the ball is pitched at 95 miles per hour, you can add another 10 feet.
If the batter pulls toward the foul line, the ball will pick up another 15 feet. On a hot, dry day, the air is thinner and the ball can move faster, so add another 10 feet. Hot weather makes the ball more “lively”.
What if there is a 10 miles per hour wind behind the batter? Then the ball will go 40 more feet.
All those possibilities were thought out by scientists. Knowing more about science will help you know more about baseball!

33. How much farther can the ball travel if there's a 10 miles per hour wind behind the batter?

In 1824, a Frenchman named Louis Braille invented a system of writing for blind people. This system, called Braille, uses patterns of raised dots. The dots are punched into the back of paper with a special tool called a stylus.
To solve the writing problem, inventors developed the braillewriter—a machine like a typewriter that types Braille dots.
What if a blind person wanted to write something for a sighted person? A solution came in 1986: MPRINT, a machine that links a braillewriter to an ink printer. As words are typed in Braille, MPRINT changes the Braille keystrokes into letters. This invention lets a blind person write in Braille and produce a printed copy for sighted readers.

B. Monitor
C. Competitor
D. Translator
