As summer gives way to autumn, do you find yourself getting upset more easily? Then maybe you have the so-called autumn sadness. In worse cases, some may have Seasonal Affective Disorder (季节性情感障碍), or SAD.
SAD is a type of depression (抑郁症). It usually starts in late autumn or early winter and goes away during spring and summer. People who have SAD are likely to oversleep, overeat, and lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. They also feel upset and even hopeless.
As summer goes away, the shorter days can make people feel sad and lazy. Many of us find ourselves without enough warmth and sunlight. Johns Hopkins University has said that not having enough natural light during the autumn and winter months may mess up the body clock. This can lead to depression.
People with autumn SAD often need help from a doctor. Light treatment (疗法) is a common and good way to treat it. Doctors recommend that patients try to be in the sun as much as they can. Sunlight can help balance chemicals and help a patient become healthy again. Also, living a healthy life, like sleeping early, exercising often, and eating well, can help people deal with SAD.________ So, while you’re studying inside the classroom, don’t forget to go outside and enjoy the sun whenever you can.
Although most SAD cases happen in autumn and winter, some people get it in spring and summer. Those with summer SAD may find it hard to sleep, not feel like eating, and become angry easily. Kelly Rohan, a professor at the University of Vermont in the US, suggests that people with summer SAD stay in cool, air-conditioned places to help them feel better.

A.sad B.angry C.afraid

One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mom. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn’t notice three hours had passed by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mom ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I didn’t make the pie successfully, I really enjoyed the process.
The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just focus on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.
Don’t always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. And success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.
Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
Reward (奖励) yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. Rewarding yourself for small wins can go a long way. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favorite cake once in a while.
54.How does the writer start the article?
A.By giving an example. B.By comparing facts. C.By using old sayings.
55.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.The writer’s mom was pleased with the pie the writer made though it wasn’t delicious.
B.The writer thought the process of making the apple pie was boring.
C.The writer felt sorry that the pie looked terrible and wasn’t delicious.
56.What does the word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Process. B.Success. C.Award.
57.Which could be the best title for the text?
A.Enjoy the Process B.What Does Success Mean to Us? C.Never Give Up

Do you know the reason why we feel tired in the middle of a class? Maybe you would say it is because the teacher’s class is boring. 58 Perhaps this is something you have not paid enough attention to or not yet noticed.
Purpose of sleep
59 Sleep helps our bodies heal (修复), grow, and stay healthy. It also gives us energy, so we can be active all day. Doctors and health scientists say: When you close your eyes and need to rest, sleep is just the very best! This is more than advice.
Sleep time
Enough sleep is important to us. How much sleep do we need? New-born babies sleep most of the time. They can sleep 20~22 hours a day. Children need 10~12 hours of sleep a day. Teenagers need 8~10 hours of sleep a day because they need lots of energy to grow into their adult bodies. Grown-ups usually need 6~8 hours of sleep to keep active. The older you get, the less sleep you will need. 60
Interesting facts
Almost everyone has their dreams while they sleep, but not all of them can tell their dreams clearly when they wake up. 61 More surprisingly, some may even get up in their dreams and walk around. This is called “sleepwalking”. Are you a sleepwalker? Or, is there a sleepwalker around you?
62
It’s not just people that love to snooze (打盹). In fact, many animals have unusual or surprising sleeping habits. Some animals, such as bears and hedgehogs, sleep all through winter. The swift is a very fast bird that can sleep while it flies! Cute koalas sleep around 18 hours a day. Giraffes don’t need much sleep at all. They usually sleep standing up.
A.Sleepy animals.
B.Why do we need sleep?
C.Some people talk in their dreams.
D.However, the real reason is probably that we don’t have enough sleep.
E.That is why old people sleep less than young people.
F.Some people never dream while they sleep.

As one of the operas that started in Beijing, Beijing Opera has a history of over 200 years. In the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kun Opera (昆曲) was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Plenty of local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Then new Beijing Opera formed and became Qianlong’s favorite. Later, it became popular among the public. Beijing Opera gradually became the most influential style of opera in China and was named the “national treasure” of China.
It’s not easy to become a Beijing Opera actor. They have to train from early childhood as they need to master almost all the performing arts, like singing, dancing and acting. Lulu, an 8-year-old girl who was learning the skills in a group, had to get up at 5:00 a. m. in the early morning to practice. The biggest problem Lulu had was learning the way of singing. “In the beginning, my throat was painful because I was using my voice in the wrong way.” she said. Then she asked the teachers for help. With the help of the teachers, she improved a lot.

An earthquake hit Gansu just before midnight on Dec 18, 2023. Besides bringing down buildings, the earthquake caused a sand boil (砂涌) in two villages in neighboring Qinghai Province. The mud (泥) was about 2 to 3 meters deep on average, covering nearly 60,000 square meters.
A sand boil happens when the space between sand particles (颗粒) is completely filled with water.
