Birthday parties have changed a lot over the years. They used to be just a homemade or store-bought cake and a few balloons, but now they have become a big business and many parents are finding it hard to pay for them.
If you have been to a children’s birthday party, you know that people often feel they should bring a gift, even if the invitation says “No Gifts” nicely. What’s more, it is often very hard to choose a gift. So, what happens if the birthday child gets a lot of random (随意的) gifts? Often, these gifts aren’t interesting to them or may even be something that they already have.
Without doubt, the fiver birthday party is becoming popular. At a fiver birthday party, rather than bringing gifts, each guest brings $5. This money goes towards a big gift that birthday child can choose later. Thus, people can just take $5 out of their wallets in place of worrying about what gift to buy.
This is a good idea for parents who don’t have time to go shopping for every birthday. It’s also better for the environment because people use less wrapping (包装) paper and fewer gift bags. Another good thing about the fiver birthday party is that it can help children learn about the value of money and how to spend money wisely.
Do you like the idea of a fiver birthday party?
59. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A few balloons. B. Homemade cakes. C. Store-bought cakes. D. Birthday parties.
60. Why is the fiver birthday party becoming popular?
A. Because children can get more expensive gifts from guests.
B. Because it solves the problem of choosing the gifts properly.
C. Because the invitation of the fiver birthday parties asks for nothing.
D. Because guests don’t need to spend time going to the birthday party.
61. How many advantages are mentioned in Paragraph 4 about a fiver birthday party?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
62. What will probably be talked about next?
A. How to organize a fiver birthday party. B. The history of the fiver birthday party.
C. Why homemade cakes are popular at parties. D. The skill to tell the difference between parties.
D 60. B 61. C 62. A

第一段“Birthday parties have changed a lot over the years. They used to be just a homemade or store-bought cake and a few balloons, but now they have become a big business and many parents are finding it hard to pay for them.”
第三段提到“At a fiver birthday party, rather than bringing gifts, each guest brings $5. This money goes towards a big gift that birthday child can choose later. Thus, people can just take $5 out of their wallets in place of worrying about what gift to buy.”,这说明五美元生日派对流行的主要原因是它解决了“选礼物难”的问题。

Do you know that chocolate comes from a tree? The cocoa tree gets large brown fruits called cocoa pods (荚), and inside the pods are cocoa beans. To make chocolate, first we leave the beans in the dark for a few days, and then dry them in the sun. After that, the beans are pressed hard until a dark liquid (液体) comes out. That liquid is pressed until it separates and the product is cocoa butter, which can be turned into chocolate. What a lot of work just to make a piece of chocolate!
The first people to grow cocoa trees for chocolate were the Mayans, who lived in Mexico thousands of years ago. They used chocolate to make a special drink that they used during their religious (宗教) services. When Spanish people came to Mexico, they discovered the drink, took chocolate home with them, and soon the passion for chocolate spread all over Europe! Almost everyone talked about chocolate excitedly and couldn’t wait to have a taste of it.
Chocolate is good for you as long as you don’t eat it all day long. It has iron (铁), which is good for your body. But remember where there is chocolate, there is sugar! So don’t eat too much, and remember to brush your teeth after you eat it.
63. What does the underlined word “passion” in Paragraph 2 mean?
64. Which of the following about chocolate is WRONG?
A. Chocolate comes from cocoa pods on cocoa trees. B. The Spanish first grew cocoa trees for chocolate.
C. Chocolate can’t be eaten as much as you like. D. Chocolate has iron which is good for our body.
65. Where can we find this passage?
A. In a science book about medicine. B. In a magazine about party foods. C. In a history book about a festival. D. In a report about making money.
A 64. B 65. B

第二段提到“When Spanish people came to Mexico, they discovered the drink, took chocolate home with them, and soon the passion for chocolate spread all over Europe! Almost everyone talked about chocolate excitedly and couldn’t wait to have a taste of it.”,西班牙人把巧克力带回家后,很快对巧克力的“passion”传遍欧洲,几乎每个人都兴奋地谈论巧克力并迫不及待想品尝,由此可知“passion”意思是“狂热”。
第二段指出“The first people to grow cocoa trees for chocolate were the Mayans, who lived in Mexico thousands of years ago.”,说明最早种植可可树制作巧克力的是玛雅人,而不是西班牙人,B选项表述错误。
D
There is certainly more visiting without an appointment (预约) in Australia than there would be in England. All the same, you have to be careful about your timing.
Once a very close Indian friend talked to me about how embarrassed (尴尬的) he felt when he called on his friends shortly before “Tea” (the evening meal, or dinner, in Australia). They would sit talking very politely, but clearly waiting for him to leave. In fact, they were dying for him to leave as time went on.
In Asia of course, and many Mediterranean (地中海的) countries too, the problem simply would not arise: the family would naturally invite their friends to share the evening meal with them. But this kind of thing does not come easily to Australians, so do not expect it. Instead, leave before dinner time. Australians give visitors a hug, or even give visitors a kiss. But they don’t offer visitors a drink when they come for a visit, unlike in some Asian cultures.
If you come from a society where home help can be got quite easily, you should remember that this is usually not true in Australia. So it would be a good idea to offer to help clear the table and to wash up when you finish dinner at a friend’s place. The hostess may refuse you, but she will certainly be thankful for your offer.
66. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Englishmen never accept visiting without an appointment.
B. Visiting without an appointment is more common in Australia than in the UK.
C. You don’t need to care about timing when visiting Australians.
D. Australians prefer visiting friends with an appointment.
67. What can we learn about the writer’s Indian friend from Paragraph 2?
A. He knew nothing about Australian Tea. B. He misunderstood his Australian friends.
C. He helped set the table before dinner time. D. He had a very bad experience as a visitor.
68. What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “arise” in Paragraph 3?
A. Appear. B. Allow. C. Follow. D. Achieve.
69. What should visitors do after having dinner in Australia?
A. Wash their hands. B. Offer to do the dishes. C. Stay to have a drink. D. Leave immediately.
B 67. D 68. A 69. B
第一段指出“There is certainly more visiting without an appointment (预约) in Australia than there would be in England.”,这直接说明在澳大利亚不预约拜访比在英国更常见。
第三段提到“In Asia of course, and many Mediterranean (地中海的) countries too, the problem simply would not arise: the family would naturally invite their friends to share the evening meal with them. But this kind of thing does not come easily to Australians”,结合语境可知,在亚洲和地中海国家家庭会自然邀请朋友共享晚餐,但澳大利亚人不这样,所以这种问题不会“出现”,故“arise”意思是“出现”,与“Appear”意思最接近。
最后一段说明“So it would be a good idea to offer to help clear the table and to wash up when you finish dinner at a friend’s place.”,说明在澳大利亚朋友家吃完晚餐后,主动提出帮忙收拾桌子和洗碗是很好的做法。

Mike was walking his dog, Paul, when the dog had to go. It was garbage day (垃圾日). Looking around but seeing no public garbage bins (桶), so Mike put the bag of dog poop (狗屎) into someone else’s bin. When Mike turned around, the angry person who owned the bin was shouting at him. “Hey! This isn’t your garbage bin. You can’t put the bag in here!”
Mike quickly walked away to stop things from getting worse. As he walked toward home, he kept thinking, “Was I in the wrong?” Then Mike posted his story online, and lots of people replied.
Mike said about 80 percent were OK with others using their garbage bins for bags of dog poop. Some would allow it anytime. Others would like the bags to be put in before the garbage was picked up, so the bin wouldn’t smell for days on end. The 20 percent, who didn’t allow others to use their bins for dog poop, said that people had incorrectly used their bins.
“Having a dog and being a dog owner had something to do with it,” Mike said. Mike has a good idea of working this out. “If you can have a piece of paper that says, ‘Yes, you can put your dog’s poop bags in my bin,’ I think we can find the answer to the problem,” Mike says.
70. What did 80 percent of the people think about Mike’s action?
A. They were angry about Mike doing this action. B. They allowed others to use their bins for dog poop.
C. They thought Mike used the bin incorrectly. D. They asked Mike to take the bag away at once.
71. What’s Mike’s idea to solve the problem?
A. To carry extra trash bags for his dog. B. To find more public garbage bins.
C. To make a note to allow others to use his bin. D. To talk with the bin owner and say sorry.
72. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Mike’s Dog-walking Experience. B. A Problem of Dog Poop and Trash Bins.
C. How to Use Public Garbage Bins. D. Different Opinions on Keeping Dogs.
B 71. C 72. B
第三段明确指出:“Mike said about 80 percent were OK with others using their garbage bins for bags of dog poop.”
文章最后一段提到:“If you can have a piece of paper that says, ‘Yes, you can put your dog’s poop bags in my bin,’ I think we can find the answer to the problem.”
选项“A Problem of Dog Poop and Trash Bins”准确概括了主题,而其他选项偏离了文章重点。

When I gave up my high-paying job, everyone around me said, “Susan, you are crazy!” That year, I was 27 years old. I had spent five years working for a company in New York, US. My life didn’t look anything like I wanted it to be. I looked back at my life and discovered my true interests—I wanted to live abroad and be free to know about the world I lived in.
To make a living while staying abroad, I decided to teach English. Moving abroad to be an English teacher wasn’t something people often did. But I believed in myself and went for it anyway.
By teaching, I finally have a good chance to give, which is different from many other jobs. Together with excellent teachers, I have helped people who’d like to make their own dreams come true. Once a handwriting note was sent to me by one of our graduates, Joan. It was about how our course helped to do her job better. At that moment, I suddenly realized what I really wanted.
