Most of us have tooth problems from time to time, but only a few of us go to the dentist. Lots of us find it a little bit horrible, but we have to understand that a dentist is someone who wants to help us by making sure that we have healthy teeth and gums (牙龈).
Dentists’ job is to give us advice about how to take good care of our teeth and gums. They also tell us about making healthy choices about our eating habits. This is because the choices we make about our food every day can make a big difference to our teeth. Having healthy teeth is an important part of having a healthy body, so dentists encourage us to have cleaning and check-ups for our teeth from time to time. Dentists also do things like filling teeth, removing teeth, polishing teeth and so on. Sometimes they have to take X-rays to look at our teeth and gums to find out what the problem is.
There are different kinds of dentists. For example, an orthodontist (正畸医师) fits braces (牙箍) that help people to straighten teeth, and a paediatric (儿科的) dentist looks after children’s teeth.
Would you like to be a dentist when you grow up? Here are some skills needed.

“I didn’t do anything!” “Say you’re sorry!” “It’s not my fault!” Sound familiar? If so, you are like a lot of kids who sometimes argue with their friends or family members. It’s not always easy to get on with others. Kids aren’t perfect, so they sometimes do things that get them into trouble. Saying “I’m sorry” or apologizing can help.
Kids might need to apologize if they hurt someone or lost someone’s things. They might need to apologize if they broke something, or if they did something they knew was wrong— like telling a lie or breaking a rule. Maybe they did something their parents told them not to do, or maybe they didn’t do something they were expected to do.
There are many ways to apologize. Here are some examples: “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings.” “I’m sorry I lost your book.” “I’m sorry I yelled at you.” “I’m really sorry I hit you when I was mad. That was wrong. I won’t do it anymore.” When you apologize to someone, he or she might apologize back to you: “That’s OK, I’m sorry, too. I shouldn’t have laughed at you.” And then maybe you can both feel friendly again.
Sometimes a heartfelt “I’m sorry” fixes everything right away. Other times, it might take a while for someone to feel friendly after you apologize. You might need to give the other person some time. Even after you say you’re sorry, you might still feel bad about what you said or did— but you can feel good about apologizing and about making up your mind to do better.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey on students’ abilities to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people.
This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who usually achieve good grades, showed only average abilities to work together.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they view school as a place for competition.” “However, collaborative (合作的) skills are very important to prepare students for today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls tend to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class debates, students tend to have better attitudes toward collaborating.
1.PISA did a survey about students’ ability to ________.
A.make plans for school projects B.work with other people

2.Which of the following is NOT in the survey’s findings?
A.Those who do well on tests are also better at collaboration.
B.Collaborative skills are less important than scores for students.
C.Girls are better at working with others than boys.
D.Good class activities help students perform better in groups.
3.Why are top students in China less likely to work with others, according to Zhao Zhongxin?
A.Because they prefer to work by themselves.
B.Because their parents don’t teach them such skills
C.Because they usually see others as competitors.
D.Because they don’t think they’ll need this skill.
4.What can teachers do to improve students’ collaborative skills?
A.Give students high scores on every test. B.Help students get used to exam pressure.
C.Make girls work with girls more than boys. D.Design more communicative activities in class.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.D

Jonny, a 15-year-old student, is checking his dad’s old jacket. He says. “You’re 45. Dad, you’re never going to wear this again. Can I have it?”
Keith has had a bad day at work, and he is feeling old. And Jonny has hit his pain. Keith raises his voice and says, “What? You mean I’m too old to wear the jacket again?”
Jonny feels like this has come out of nowhere, and now he feels hurt. “But I only asked, why are you shouting at me?”
“But I don’t like being treated as though I’m too old.” Both of them feel a bit upset.
Have you ever had a similar argument with the people around you? Here are some tips for you to remember when you’re getting mad.
●Accept your feelings and consider the other person’s feelings. That means not always making yourself “right” or “clever” and the other person “wrong” or “stupid”.
●Explain yourself and not the other person, so you can speak out your ideas by starting with “I” but not “You”.
●Don’t react before reflecting. If you feel angry, I think it’s a good idea to stop for a moment and understand why.
●Don’t decide the purpose of the other person by your guessing. Try to work out what he or she is feeling, and admit (承认) it if you were wrong.
Don’t forget that it’s never too late to develop good ways of communicating.

Do you know meerkats (猫鼬)? They are small. Their bodies are about 29cm long. They mainly live in the dry areas in Africa, with enemies everywhere. So how do meerkats stay alive in such a challenging environment?
Well, they have developed many skills: They’re good at hunting (狩猎); they can see enemies from far away. But the most important thing is that they live and work together as a team.
Meerkats live underground in groups. Everyone has a role to play. Usually, one meerkat watches for enemies, and the others are responsible for tasks like looking after the baby meerkats and looking for food. When danger comes, the guard meerkat will make a loud warning sound so that all the others can run and hide. Sometimes, if there is a direct fight, meerkats will work together to drive away the enemies.
Meerkats demonstrate the importance of teamwork. It is the key to their safety and survival (生存) in the wild. They show us that together we are stronger. For humans, teams are groups of people with different skills. They work toward a common goal. When everyone in a team uses their own strengths, the team can achieve more.

What makes a great team? Different people may have different answers, but there are some common secrets.
First, good communication is the bridge of a great team. Team members need to talk openly and listen to each other carefully. When someone has a problem, others should offer help instead of criticizing. For example, in our class basketball team, we have a rule: before each game, we have a 10-minute meeting to discuss strategies. This helps us work better together.
Second, a shared goal is the direction of a great team. All members should work towards the same goal. If everyone has different ideas, the team can't move forward. Once, our science team decided to build a small robot. At first, some members wanted to focus on appearance, while others cared more about function. We had a long discussion and finally agreed on a shared goal—to make a useful and attractive robot.
Third, respect is the foundation of a great team. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. We should respect each other's differences. For example, in our group project, Tom is good at designing, and I am good at writing reports. We respect each other's skills and work together smoothly.
In fact, a great team is not about having the best members, but about working together in the right way. When team members communicate well, share the same goal and respect each other, they can overcome any difficulty.
1.What is the bridge of a great team according to the passage?
A.Good communication. B.A shared goal.
C.Respect. D.Leadership.
2.Why does the basketball team have a meeting before each game?
A.To criticize team members. B.To discuss strategies.
C.To show their skills. D.To relax before the game.
3.What happened to the science team at first?
A.They had different ideas about the robot.
B.They agreed on the robot’s design immediately.
C.They finished the robot very quickly.
D.They gave up building the robot.
4.What does the writer think is the most important for a great team?
A.Having the best members.
B.Working together in the right way.
C.Knowing each other well.
D.Making strict rules.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The secrets of a great team.
B.The importance of communication.

A.make plans for school projects B.work with other people
C.get high scores on tests D.solve difficult problems
1.Jonny felt hurt because his dad ________.

A.Having the best members.
B.Working together in the right way.

B.The importance of communication.
C.How to build a robot with a team.
D.The role of leadership in a team.
