The Mãori have origins in New Zealand dating back to about 1300 CE, according to Britannica. In Rotorua, the Maori represent 16.5% of the population, according to the 2018 New Zealand census At the Te Puia Cultural Center, Mãori traditions have been on full display for tourists from around the world for more than 130 years. Ariana Brailey is a Mãori performer at the cultural center. She said the work she does is “beautiful”. “For me, it’s not working. I never ever come to work. I come to have fun. I come to perform with my family,” Brailey said, “for the people who come and truly want to learn about who we are and what we’re doing.” The cultural center is also home to the national schools of traditional Mãori carving and weaving (编织). For Maori people, cultural preservation is paramount. Older generations had been strongly discouraged from using their native language, causing the Mãori language to nearly die out. And similar things happened to other aspects of Mãori culture. Now, Mãori culture is experiencing a resurgence (复苏). “There are young people that are absorbed and excited about being Mãori and learning from Mãori, so it is a very exciting time,” said Dr. Anaha Hiini, who is a lecturer of Mãori and Indigenous studies at the Waiariki Institute of Technology. Hiini believes it’s important to preserve the history of a culture, in order to save it in the future. “Every part of our culture and history matters because it’s what gives us our connection to our ancestors (祖先),” he said. “It tells us where we come from and it’s also going to tell us where we’re going, too.” 16.How does the author start the text? A.By describing a typical scene. B.By presenting the fact directly. C.By comparing different views. D.By stating his own experience. 17.What can we learn about the Maori people? A.They mainly live on small islands like Rotorun. B.They’ve been living in New Zealand for over 700 years. C.They have faced a falling population for over 130 years. D.They take up 16.5% of the population of New Zealand. 18.What does Ariana Brailey think of her work at the Te Puia Cultural Center? A.Difficult and tiring. B.Boring but necessary. C.Interesting and meaningful. D.Challenging but creative. 19.What does the underlined word “paramount” in paragraph 5 mean? A.Most important. B.Totally unexpected. C.Very inspiring. D.Extremely impressive. 20.What does Dr. Anaha Hiini think is most important? A.Knowing where to go in the future. B.Getting connected to our ancestors. C.Passing down a culture to young generations. D.Spreading a culture to other parts of the world. 根据文章第一段“In the heart of New Zealand's north island, the small town of Rotorua has become a stronghold of cultural preservation for a group of Indigenous people, the Maori.(在新西兰北岛的中心,小镇罗托鲁瓦已成为土著毛利人文化保护的据点。)” 根据文章第二段“The Mãori have origins in New Zealand dating back to about 1300 CE, according to Britannica.(根据《大英百科全书》,毛利人起源于新西兰,可追溯到公元1300年左右。)” 根据文章第四段Ariana Brailey的话“For me, it’s not working. I never ever come to work. I come to have fun. I come to perform with my family(对我来说,这不是工作。我从不来上班,我是来玩的,是和家人一起表演)”和“for the people who come and truly want to learn about who we are and what we’re doing.(为了那些真正想了解我们是谁、我们在做什么的游客。)” 根据文章第五段“For Maori people, cultural preservation is paramount. Older generations had been strongly discouraged from using their native language, causing the Mãori language to nearly die out.(对毛利人来说,文化保护是paramount。老一辈曾被强烈劝阻使用母语,导致毛利语几乎消亡。)”可知,毛利语几乎消亡,他们急需要保护文化,由此可知,对于毛利人来说,文化保护是非常重要,因此paramount意为“最重要的”。故选A项。 20. 根据最后一段 “Hiini believes it’s important to preserve the history of a culture, in order to save it in the future (Hiini 认为为了在未来拯救一种文化,保护其历史是很重要的).” B Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover. Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistic brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town. Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrid” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories? Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important. 21.How do preservationists see buildings? A.They focus on their value rather than appearance. B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings. C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings. D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones. 22.What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building? A.It’s confusing. B.It’s pleasing. C.It’s regrettable. D.It’s unbelievable. 23.Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down? A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era. B.To make land available for cheap housing. C.To work off the deep anger of the working class. D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era. 24.What is the author’s intention of writing this passage? A.To introduce some buildings with historical value. B.To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings. C.To praise the work of preservationists. D.To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings. 25.Where does the text probably come from? A.A culture paper. B.A science book. C.An environment report. D.A travel magazine. 21.A 22.C 23.B 24.D 25.A 【导语】这是一篇议论文。 根据第一段中的“I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.(我想你可以说,我们文物保护者看建筑的角度与众不同——我们能在丑小鸭里看到天鹅,在简洁的线条里读出故事,在封面背后发现整本书)”可知,文物保护者关注的是价值而非外观。故选A。 22. 根据第二段中的“Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.(不幸的是,这一遮阳板于2011年被拆除,使得这座建筑与镇上众多现代风格的建筑别无二致)”可推知,作者对拆除遮阳板、导致建筑失去独特性这件事带有遗憾之情。故选C。 23. 根据第三段中的“It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class.(它讲述了20世纪50年代和60年代的故事,当时人们希望建立一个更加平等的社会,为工人阶级提供廉价的住房)”可知,旧金山的许多维多利亚式建筑被拆除,以便腾出土地建造廉价住房。故选B。 24. 根据第一段中的“I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.(我想你可以说,我们文物保护者看建筑的角度与众不同——我们能在丑小鸭里看到天鹅,在简洁的线条里读出故事,在封面背后发现整本书)”、最后一段“Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.(文物保护不仅仅是保留那些美观、完好的建筑,更是为了传递我们历史的片段——不仅是重大事件的历史,还包括人们曾经常去某家街角集市这类日常故事。我们的历史不能只靠那些符合某些人审美标准的建筑来诉说;有时我们的历史是沉重的,但同样重要)”可推知,作者写作的目的是强调保护丑陋建筑重要性。故选D。 25.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Preservation is not just  about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.(文物保护不仅仅是保留那些美观、完好的建筑,更是为了传递我们历史的片段——不仅是重大事件的历史,还包括人们曾经常去某家街角集市这类日常故事。我们的历史不能只靠那些符合某些人审美标准的建筑来诉说;有时我们的历史是沉重的,但同样重要)”可知,本文围绕文物保护的本质是传承历史展开,聚焦建筑与历史文化的关联,属于文化范畴。由此推知,这篇文章可能来自一篇文化论文。故选A。 C The question of what you want to be when you grow up is something most kids have a ready answer for, but it’s not every day that a primary school student begins their career at the age of seven. But that is just what Wiradjuri girl Penelope Towney has done, making her first film at an age when many kids are still trying to find out how to use the camera. Penelope’s short film — The Land We’re On With Penelope Towney — is coming soon to NITV and was made so that Australian students and their families can understand a little more about the culture of First Nations (原住民) through her eyes. Memorizing a speech to deliver to the camera was the most challenging part of the filming process, according to Penelope. “It took many days… but I ended up learning the whole thing and did it without palm cards (手卡) — almost 400 words,” she said. One inspiration (灵感) for making the film is the Know Your Country campaign, led by First Nations and supported by World Vision, which aims to have a First Nations cultural educator in every Australian primary school. “I’ve attended a school before where we’ve had First Nations educators,” Penelope said. “There were black kids and white kids, all learning about First Nations’ history and culture together. It was really deadly and we all loved it. I think there was more understanding between each other too. We need that.” World Vision First Nations policy adviser and Wiradjuri man, Dr Scott Winch, said that most schools were not provided with money to have local First Nations community members to help teachers, students and schools to fill the knowledge gap. “A good primary school education featuring (以……为特色) positive relationships with people from the local First Nations community will set all Australian kids up for lifelong learning, appreciation (欣赏) and respect for First Nations culture and people,” Dr Winch said. “This is about all Australians knowing and becoming better connected to the country. This is an important gift to all Australian students that could change how Australians understand each other and their relationship to this land and the world’s oldest living culture.” 26.What did Penelope do at seven? A.She worked for NITV. B.She shot a short film. C.She built a great career. D.She experienced culture shock. 27.What is the main purpose of Penelope’s short film? A.To promote her own career as a filmmaker. B.To teach Australian students about First Nations culture. C.To document her personal experiences growing up. D.To criticize the lack of funding for First Nations. 28.What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “deadly” in paragraph 5? A.Dangerous B.Boring C.Great D.Serious 29.What does Dr Winch think of the Know Your Country campaign? A.It stresses the need for early childhood education in cultural awareness. B.It can improve parent-child relationships. C.It should focus on free primary school education. D.It is important to the shared future of all Australians. 30.What would be the best title for the passage? A.A Child’s Journey into the World of Cinema B.The Quest for Supporting First Nations culture in Schools C.Penelope’s Film: A Window into First Nations Culture D.The Impact of Technology on Film Making 【答案】26.B 27.B 28.C 29.D 30.C 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中“But that is just what Wiradjuri girl Penelope Towney has done, making her first film at an age when many kids are still trying to find out how to use the camera.(但这就是维拉吉里女孩佩内洛普·汤尼所做的,她在许多孩子还在努力学习如何使用相机的年纪就拍摄了她的第一部电影)”可知,佩内洛普在七岁时拍摄了一部短片。故选B项。 27. 根据第二段中“Penelope’s short film — The Land We’re On With Penelope Towney — is coming soon to NITV and was made so that Australian students and their families can understand a little more about the culture of First Nations (原住民) through her eyes.(佩内洛普的短片——《与佩内洛普·汤尼共处的这片土地》——即将在NITV播出,这部短片的制作目的是让澳大利亚的学生和家庭能够通过她的视角更多地了解原住民的文化)”可知,佩内洛普的短片的主要目的是向澳大利亚学生介绍原住民文化。故选B项。 28. 根据划线词前文“There were black kids and white kids, all learning about First Nations’ history and culture together.(那里有黑人孩子和白人孩子,他们一起学习原住民的历史和文化)”和后文“and we all loved it. I think there was more understanding between each other too. We need that.(我们都很喜欢它。我认为彼此之间也有了更多的理解。我们需要这个)”可知,有原住民教育者参与的共同学习原住民历史和文化的经历是“很棒的”,所以deadly在此处意为“很棒的”,与Great同义。故选C项。 29.推理判断题。根据最后一段中Dr. Winch的话“This is about all Australians knowing and becoming better connected to the country. This is an important gift to all Australian students that could change how Australians understand each other and their relationship to this land and the world’s oldest living culture.(这是关于所有澳大利亚人了解这个国家并与这个国家建立更好联系的问题。这是给所有澳大利亚学生的一份重要礼物,它可以改变澳大利亚人相互理解的方式,以及他们与这片土地和世界上最古老的活文化的关系)”可知,Winch博士认为Know Your Country活动对澳大利亚人的未来很重要。故选D项。 30.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“Penelope’s short film — The Land We’re On With Penelope Towney — is coming soon to NITV and was made so that Australian students and their families can understand a little more about the culture of First Nations (原住民) through her eyes.(佩内洛普的短片——《与佩内洛普·汤尼共处的这片土地》——即将在NITV播出,这部短片的制作目的是让澳大利亚的学生和家庭能够通过她的视角更多地了解原住民的文化)”可知,本文主要讲述了原住民女孩佩内洛普·汤尼拍摄了一部短片,旨在让澳大利亚的学生和家庭更多地了解原住民文化,C项“Penelope’s Film: A Window into First Nations Culture(佩内洛普的电影:了解原住民文化的一扇窗)”符合文章主旨,是最佳标题。故选C项。 D Walled Cities Of The World There are numerous historical walled cities across the world, whose walls date back several centuries. B Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. C The question of what you want to be when you grow up is something most kids have a ready answer for, but it’s not every day that a primary school student begins their career at the age of seven. A.A Child’s Journey into the World of Cinema B.The Quest for Supporting First Nations culture in Schools C.Penelope’s Film: A Window into First Nations Culture D.The Impact of Technology on Film Making D Walled Cities Of The World There are numerous historical walled cities across the world, whose walls date back several centuries. These walls were fortification (碉堡), a necessity throughout medieval eras for defense. They have been preserved as historical monuments and popular tourist attractions in the modern time. York, England The city of York is a medieval city situated in the north of England. Historically, the city was ruled by the Romans, Angles, and the Vikings before being incorporated as part of the Kingdom of England in 954. Located in the city are walls built in 71AD which have been restored and extended with time. Xi’an, China The city of Xian is one of the oldest cities in China. It prospered economically as the eastern last station of the Silk Road. The existing walls were originally built in 770 BC and reconstructed in the 14th century under the Ming Dynasty. The walls are well preserved and are a major tourist attraction in the city. Quebec City, Canada Quebec City was a colonial (殖民地的) town which was fortified by the settling Europeans.
