In one apartment in Jos, Nigeria, Wuni Bitrus and a dozen students gathered around a table covered with a toolbox, a 12-volt adapter and a mix of colored wires. The students’ idea was to build a “smart” door that opens with the touch of a finger.
The students chatted in sign language, and Mr. Bitrus signed back. The group discussed using Arduino, an open-source electronics platform, and one student wondered how fingerprints could be stored. Mindful of Nigeria’s electricity problems, Mr. Bitrus advised the group to use a battery-powered keypad lock system first and include a fingerprint feature later. After nodding in agreement, the students excitedly started working.
This is one typical scene in a club run by the Deaf Technology Foundation (DTF), a nonprofit co-founded by Mr. Bitrus. It coaches deaf Nigerian children and young adults in computer programming and robotics which are believed to maintain a rising trend in today’s labor market. The students also work to improve their reading skills and receive career guidance.
Mr. Bitrus’ desire to change Nigeria’s deaf communities was awakened in 2016. While teaching, he noticed a 13-year-old girl was treated unfairly and he became determined to learn sign language. One year later, he got funded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and established DTF with a friend.
One of the darkest memories that Mercy Samson Grimah, a student of the foundation, has about growing up is looking at the faces of people around her. Ms. Grimah says her private secondary school did not formally teach sign language to her, nor much of anything else. But fortunately, she formed a bond with the foundation. “I’d never touched a laptop before in my life, ” she says. Now, she wants to become a computer scientist.
So far, DTF has been struggling to keep the dreams of these students alive, as it can only afford two paid instructors and it is difficult to keep up with the growing number of students. DTF intends to take advantage of Nigeria’s rapid tech development, joining hands with companies on self-driving car technology and automated wheelchairs to secure its existence.
21.What does the scene in the Jos’s apartment display?
A.A debate about door security issues. B.A sense of teamwork and innovation.
C.The serious competition among students. D.The complexity of teaching deaf students.
22.What is the primary goal of DTF?
A.To bridge the digital gap for deaf youths.
B.To build smart devices for deaf students.

23.What aspect of DTF does paragraph 4 focus on?
A.Its influence. B.Its objective.
C.Its challenges. D.Its origins.
24.Why does the author mention Mercy Samson Grimah?
A.To show her passion for computer science.
B.To indicate the importance of aiming high.
C.To highlight DTF’s impact on its students.
D.To present the struggles of deaf students.
25.What difficulty is DTF experiencing?
A.Limited learning materials.

On a bright, sunny day along the Crooked River in central Oregon, kids are fishing. But what’s happening in that river runs much deeper than catching a fish — exactly what Chad Brown was hoping for when he started Soul River. The Portland-based non-profit offers an escape into nature for kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
Chad had been in a bad car accident. Since then, he’s been dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trying to escape the anxiety and nightmares (噩梦). “I seemed to be lifeless. I couldn’t feel the air. I couldn’t feel the grass. I couldn’t smile,” he said. But when a friend took him fishing, he regained energy and life. “That brought me into the present where I could actually feel the air, feel the currents, that I’m standing in water... It made me feel alive.”
It was a turning point in Chad’s life. Drawing on the strength he found in nature, Chad discovered his life’s purpose and founded Soul River to share the healing (治愈的) power of nature, rivers, and fishing with at-risk inner-city youth.
In the process of enjoying nature, Chad realized that nature itself also needs to be protected, so he developed a program that takes youth into an environment where fresh water, land, wildlife, or local cultures are threatened. He works with conservation groups and Native American communities to determine which areas could use their attention and advocacy. Often, the locations are remote and extreme.
The goals of the program are layered. For the youth, it’s an opportunity to learn about leadership, relationship-building, and being integral to a community. Then, there’s a conservation and advocacy component, where the group learns about the environment they’re taken into, the specific threats it faces, and how they can be a force for good. The experience can help them find their own “Soul River” — their purpose, their passion, their connection to the outdoors and to each other.
For Chad, it’s a busy, nonstop cycle of planning, preparation, meetings, advocacy, and so on.
26.What motivated Chad to start Soul River?
A.His remarkable outdoor skills. B.His work in wildlife conservation.
C.His childhood fishing experiences. D.His desperate struggle with PTSD.
27.What is the key feature of Chad’s program?
A.Teaching youth fishing techniques. B.Encouraging youth to explore new cities.
C.Involving youth in community building. D.Connecting youth with remote wilderness.
28.What does the underlined word “it” in the second-to-last paragraph refer to?
A.The program. B.The group. C.The environment. D.The experience.
29.How might Chad’s program impact youth?
A.It enables them to learn from great leaders.
B.It promotes their growth and eco-awareness.
C.It pushes them to pursue environmental careers.
D.It improves their survival skills in extreme conditions.
30.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Discovering Your Soul River in Nature
B.Empowering Youth Through Leadership
C.Healing PTSD Through Outdoor Adventures
D.Joining Soul River to Protect Local Cultures
【答案】26.D 27.D 28.C 29.B 30.A

Often, the locations are remote and extreme.(因此他开发了一个项目,带领青少年走进淡水、土地、野生动物或当地文化受到威胁的环境。他与环保组织和美洲原住民社区合作,确定哪些地区可以得到他们的关注和倡导。这些地点往往偏远且环境恶劣)”可知,项目的核心特点是带领青少年接触偏远的野外环境。故选D。
28.词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Then, there’s a conservation and advocacy component, where the group learns about the environment they’re taken into, the specific threats it faces, and how they can be a force for good. (此外,项目还包含环保与倡导环节,参与者会了解it面临的具体威胁,以及自己如何能成为向善的力量)”可知,代词“it”指代前文提到的“the environment”,“the specific threats it faces”指“青少年所进入的环境所面临的具体威胁”。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第五段中“The goals of the program are layered. For the youth, it’s an opportunity to learn about leadership, relationship-building, and being integral to a community. Then, there’s a conservation and advocacy component, where the group learns about the environment they’re taken into, the specific threats it faces, and how they can be a force for good. The experience can help them find their own “Soul River” — their purpose, their passion, their connection to the outdoors and to each other.(该项目的目标是多层次的。
通读全文,尤其根据第三段“It was a turning point in Chad’s life. Drawing on the strength he found in nature, Chad discovered his life’s purpose and founded Soul River to share the healing (治愈的) power of nature, rivers, and fishing with at-risk inner-city youth.(这是查德人生的转折点。 故选A。

Most students, when asked about their ideal graduation gift, would probably reply, “A car”, or “Money for a deposit on a house”. Cai Kaiyuan, 21, made a different choice. As a graduation gift to himself, he decided to work as a volunteer teacher in a remote village in Xizang.
Cai, a senior majoring in electrical engineering at Huan Railway Professional Technology College, originally planned to cycle from Sichuan to Xizang. During his journey, Cai’s idea for a different graduation gift to himself began to take shape. “I did not know beforehand what the journey would mean to me. I just want to gain a unique experience and have pleasure in appreciating the view there,” he said.
It turned out cycling on a plateau was extremely challenging. And it has kept changing his outlook on life. Cai’s fingers even became frostbitten while cycling up a 5008-meter-high mountain, where temperatures often dropped to 18 below zero. At night, the ice covered the road and he fell off his bike three times. The lack of oxygen made him feel dizzy and weak. “At the most serious moment, I felt that my life was on the line.” said Cai.
However, he also gained something unexpected. At Ya’an, a city in Sichuan, he met a group of tourists who are also university students. A girl called Wu Ling told him that she planned to work as a teacher in a primary school in Xizang after her journey. He was impressed by the idea as she looked slender and weak.
It was not until he reached a family-run hotel in Shigatse that Cai’s spirits began to rise. The hotel manager’s two daughters enjoyed talking with him. The kids asked about his experiences on his trip, and showed him the beautiful local lakes. “They told me that they always liked to talk to guests, as they wanted to improve their Mandarin,” he said, “Their parents and many locals can only speak Tibetan.”
Cai was touched by the girls’ story. Their situation is tough and the local people have little chance to learn Mandarin because the schools are short of teachers. “I want to do something to improve the situation for kids like them,” said Cai. His parents finally gave their agreement and his teachers also supported him.
