The sound begins with a steady buzz echoing through the Alaskan wilderness. It is not a warning, but a signal. Stepping outside, you might see a small plane flying remarkably low. Its door opens, and a dark package with a yellow tail is thrown, landing with a soft thump on the ground. You have just been “turkey bombed.”
This “bomb” is actually a frozen turkey in a bag, marked with bright tape for visibility. Since 2021, Alaskan pilot Esther Keim has been dropping these from her plane to remote residents who might lack a traditional holiday meal. Around Christmas, she delivers hams instead.
Keim was inspired by childhood memories. Growing up in a remote area, she recalled a family friend who would annually airdrop a turkey to her family. Wanting to bring similar joy, she decided to start the project, initially for a neighbor and later expanding it to many isolated families.
Thanksgiving in Alaska presents a unique challenge. During the “freeze-up” period, rivers are impassable, trapping residents. The only land travel option is a long snowmobile ride, making Keim’s aerial deliveries especially valuable.
Armed with a list of locations, Keim and a co-pilot take off. Upon arrival, they fly low to alert residents. Once someone emerges, Keim calculates the drop. Accuracy is crucial, as a missed package could be lost in the vast landscape.
The turkey tumbles out, sometimes rolling far on icy ground. Keim often includes extra treats like candy or coffee. She records the drop to help recipients find their gift, though occasionally, a package remains missing, becoming a surprise for a lucky street sweeper.
For recipients, the gift means more than just food. It is a powerful reminder that they are not forgotten. One family, who received essential salt along with their holiday ham, kept the accompanying handwritten card taped to their door as a cherished symbol of connection.
Funded by donations, the project has grown. Keim is working to establish it as a nonprofit. She finds deep fulfillment in giving back, particularly knowing the excitement she brings to children—the same joy she once felt as a little girl watching a turkey fall from the sky.
21.What is the purpose of the “steady buzz” sound mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To warn residents of potential danger in the wilderness.
B.To signal the arrival of a plane delivering holiday packages.
C.To help locate the dropped package in the vast landscape.
D.To scare away wild animals that might approach the dropped food.
22.The most important concern for Keim during the package drop is_______.
A.Flying low enough to alert residents.
B.Ensuring the package lands accurately to avoid loss.
C.Adding extra treats like candy or coffee.
D.Recording the drop to assist in finding gifts.
23.What does the underlined word “impassable” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Opened B.Entered.
C.Crossed D.Blocked.
24.How does Keim ensure that the recipients can find the delivered package?
A.By waiting for someone to come out before dropping.
B.By communicating with recipients in advance.
C.By recording a video of the falling package.
D.By marking the package with bright colors.
25.What conclusion can be drawn from Keim’s experience?
A.Small acts build connection and joy.
B.Technology solves delivery issues.
C.Personal hobbies can grow into charitable projects
D.Community donations sustain charitable work.

“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, but I’ve always been aware from the get-go (从一开始) that there had to be more to being a professional garden designer than that,” says Karen Martin, who worked in real estate before changing careers. “I committed to gaining a deeper understanding of the principles of design. To do that I signed up for a difficult training program that covered everything from the basics of landscape design to more advanced topics.”
In addition to formal education, gaining practical experience is essential for developing the skills needed to be a successful garden designer. “I also spent countless hours volunteering at botanical gardens to gain hands-on experience in the field,” Karen recalls. “It was during these experiences that I learned about plant care and design, and how they interact to create beautiful outdoor spaces.”
“Those interested in becoming a landscape gardener may try building a collection of photographs, drafts or computer drawings of garden plans that demonstrate skills and creativity,” Karen suggests. “As I gained experience, I started building a catalogue (目录簿) of my work to show my abilities to potential clients or employers.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of the job for Karen has been the opportunity to work with clients to turn their outdoor spaces into something truly unique and beautiful. “I love listening to my clients’ visions and bringing them to life through thoughtful design and plant selection. Seeing the joy on their faces as they walk through their newly designed garden is an experience that never gets old,” says Karen.
“Of course, like any profession, there are challenges. The long hours are tiring, and the weather and soil conditions can all present obstacles (障碍) to creating the perfect outdoor space. But it’s these challenges that make the job all the more rewarding when you’re able to overcome them and create something truly special.
“All in all, becoming a professional garden designer allows me to combine my love for nature with my desire to create beauty. Plus, I always end up having a good night’s rest due to the physical parts of the job. I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Karen concludes.
26.What might Karen think of the training program?
A.It played a key role in her job switch.
B.It was too difficult for her to complete.
C.It focused much on basic designing.
D.It failed to meet her expectations.
27.What does Karen suggest potential landscape gardeners do?
A.Start their own garden.
B.Listen to employers’ ideas.
C.Volunteer at botanical gardens.
D.Build up their bank of work samples.
28.What gives Karen lasting joy in her work?
A.Working long hours under the sun.
B.Watching clients’ satisfied reactions.
C.Overcoming bad weather and soil conditions.
D.Gaining a deeper understanding of gardening.
29.What does Karen say about the challenges of the job?
A.They make her want to quit.
B.They are not worth the effort.
C.They are rare and easy to fix.
D.They make success feel more rewarding.
30.For what reason does Karen appreciate the physical aspect of her job?
A.It benefits her sleep.
B.It keeps her energetic.
C.It strengthens her muscles.
D.It inspires her curiosity about nature.

As medical science develops rapidly with new technology, what is left for the doctor to do?
For medical humanist Dr. Abraham Verghese, the answer is simple: Spend more time getting to know your patients as people. Take the time to read a poem and other literature. Do your part to bridge the gap (鸿沟) between the two cultures of science and the humanities.
It takes a doctor who knows a patient’s life history well to make the best use of these tools, Verghese said. And that means paying more attention to human character.
Verghese said machines “have gone beyond human beings in their ability to care for the patient,” that is, in diagnosing illnesses and indicating the best treatment.
But doctors can awaken the human spirit, the knowledge of human beings and their motivations (动机), which can pull together a life picture of a patient and understand them as more than a collection of symptoms.
Case history: A 64-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after repeated falls, pains, and the loss of two teeth that just fell out, with no obvious cause.
What was wrong? Was it his medicine? Was it alcohol abuse (酗酒)?
The man rapidly improved after being hospitalized. It turned out he had bachelor scurvy, a disease among older men who live alone, which results from a lack of nutrition
“He was surviving on no fruits or vegetables, just alcohol and processed meats, I would guess,” Verghese said. “My point here is that this diagnosis, as clever as it was, also might have been made much, much earlier had we had a good relationship with this patient and had some sense of who that person was, as an individual.”
31.What is Verghese’s suggestion for doctors?
A.Use machines less frequently.
B.Remember to care for patients.
C.Try to make an early diagnosis of patients.
D.Keep up with the development of technology.
32.What does Verghese think of medical equipment?
A.It needs to be improved greatly.
B.It will replace doctors sooner or later.
C.It may give patients incorrect treatment.
D.It is of great help in diagnosing illnesses.
33.What can we infer about the 64-year-old man mentioned in the text?
A.He lives on his own.
B.He lives a healthy lifestyle.
C.He suffers from a rare disease.
D.He is a regular visitor to the hospital.
34.How did the author support his/her idea in Paragraphs 6—9?
A.By giving an example.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By providing explanations.
D.By showing facts and opinions.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce some medical tools.
B.To advise doctors to get to know patients better.
C.To describe the development of medical science.
D.To show the importance of machines in medical operations.
Hard work is often the only competitive advantage many people possess. We may not be as experienced or as 36 as other people.
But we can always work harder, smarter and longer.
As Kara Lawson-the Duke women's basketball team head coach-says, generally speaking, there's a huge 37 between working hard and competing.
Plenty of people work hard. But what is the best praise you can receive or give?
You competed.
38 Lawson, most people mistake hard work for competitiveness:
“Hard work is I give you a task. I give you limitations on some task. I say, ‘You have to do this, in this amount of time, with this much weight.’ And then I force you to do it. I can force you to work hard just by what I ask you to do. You can't force someone to 39 .”
The difference might seem amazing. Hard work requires effort and so does competing.
But working hard doesn't automatically mean 40 improvement. I can put in countless hours of effort without ever trying to “win.”
As Lawson says to her players:
“At the end of every session, that's the question you're asking yourself: Did I compete today?
That's different than working hard. Working hard is something some people do. Many people work hard in whatever job they do. Before you start, and then when you're done, be 41 with yourself: ‘Did I compete today?”
When you think you're 42 , when you think you've done all you can, remember: You always find a little more inside you. You are capable of more than you think. Dig deep. Work a little harder.
When you're on the downside(劣势)of 43 and reaching a goal feels impossible, don't just work hard.
Compete: Make the extra phone call. Do the extra preparation. And remember to offer to not just tell 44 what to do but show them and then work beside them.
Every day, compete: to be the best boss you can be, the most empathetic(同理心的) listener you can be... Whatever it is, compete.
Competing will make you an even 45 “you” than you are today.
And that's the only competition that really matters.
36.A.devoted B.satisfied C.talented D.excited
37.A.relationship B.difference C.benefit D.connection
38.A.Thanks to B.In addition to C.In response to D.According to
39.A.compete B.obey C.change D.cooperate
40.A.striving for B.leading to C.asking for D.turning to
41.A.strict B.honest C.serious D.curious
42.A.finished B.engaged C.interested D.fried
43.A.disadvantage B.success C.advantage D.adventure
44.A.employers B.listeners C.competitors D.employees
45.A.better B.kinder C.wiser D.harder
After much anticipation, 60-year-old Zhu Fengqing and her husband boarded a special “silver train” in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, starting a 16-day journey across northern China.
Tailored 46 (specific) for elderly travelers, the “silver train” offers a slower pace and more attentive services. “Now that we are older, we prefer traveling by train,” Zhu said. Zhu’s trip mirrors China’s efforts to support its retirement travel market. This market is driven by a growing elderly population, 47 (number) over 300 million over-60s by the end of 2025.
In February, several government 48 (agency) jointly released an action plan to improve tourism train services that are friendly to seniors. With over 100 designed routes and 2,500 scheduled trips annually, 49 plan aims to create a nationwide network of specialized trains for older travelers.
50 (better) the accommodation for the elderly passengers, some trains have been fitted with anti-slip flooring, emergency call buttons, and other 51 (thought) amenities (便利设施) such as reading glasses and sewing kits. Menus have also been adjusted 52 senior travelers’ dietary requirements, offering balanced diets with light flavors. Now more routes 53 (develop), including flower-viewing tours, summer retreats and autumn journeys, all of 54 are popular among senior travelers. However, the silver train market is still in its early stage with 55 (limit) transport capacity. Clearly, we can expect further growth in this area.

4.—Is there any way that I can improve my English in a month?
—No, learning English is a long and slow process. _____, after all.
A.Better safe than sorry B.All is not at hand that helps
C.Rome wasn’t built in a day D.Be as you would seem to be
A. B. All is not at hand that helps C. Rome wasn’t built in a day 罗马不是一日建成的; D. Be as you would seem to be 做自己。根据题干中a long and slow process.

-- “______. The idea that humans might one day live on Mars seemed to become more possible.”
A.live; You said it B.living; You don’t say
C.lively; Whatever you say D.alive; You can say that again
A.live活着的(一般修饰物),现场播出的; You said it你算说对了;B. living活着的; You don’t say真的吗? You can say that again说的好,我同意。 You can say that again(说的好,我同意)符合题意。
The tiger is still alive.
He was the only man alive.
Every living person has a name.
Is Mrs. Smith still living?
The cat was playing with a live mouse.
It’ll be the biggest live concert the world has ever seen.
The sports ground is lively with all sorts of ball games.
The boy has a lively mind.
6.He will have to ____ of his opponent's criticisms of a wild ambition, ____ driving him to be crazy.
A.face the music; one B.cry for the moon; ones
C.walk on eggshell; who D.wake a sleeping dog; which
【答案】A
face the music勇于面对困难,接受应得的惩罚面对现实;cry for the moon异想天开,痴心妄想;walk on eggshell正处于危险境地,如履薄冰。D. wake a sleeping dog招惹是非。 分析句子可知,第二个空后driving him to be crazy是非谓语动词作定语,所以不是从句,不能用who,或which,可知,C和D错误。 句中的face the music of… 故选A项。
7.--- Mike, can you do 20 press-ups in two minutes?
--- __________. I can do 40!
A.Don’t pull my leg B.Don’t be a wet blanket

A. Don’t pull my leg不要开我的玩笑;B. Don’t be a wet blanket不要扫兴嘛;C. Don’t be a black sheep D. It’s child’s play太容易。
8.—Jane really cares what others say about her.
—No wonder she is always ________.
A.letting the cat out of the bag B.walking on egg
C.like a cat on hot bricks D.more brave than wise
A. letting the cat out of the bag泄露秘密;B. walking on egg独来独往;C. like a cat on hot bricks热锅上的蚂蚁; D. more brave than wise与其说明智倒不如说勇敢。故选B。
9.----Mum, we’ve searched at least 5 stores, but still cannot find one that suits my taste.
----Be patient, dear. ____________ .
A.The best fish swim near the bottom. B.One’s meat is another man’s poison.

【答案】A
故选A项。
10.—John has just been promoted to general manager of our company.

根据第一段“It is not a warning, but a signal. Stepping outside, you might see a small plane flying remarkably low. Its door opens, and a dark package with a yellow tail is thrown, landing with a soft thump on the ground. You have just been “turkey bombed.”(这不是警报,而是一种信号。走出户外,你可能会看到一架小型飞机飞得极低。飞机的舱门打开,一个带有黄色尾巴的黑色包裹被扔出,落地时发出轻柔的“砰”声。你刚刚遭遇了“火鸡空投”。)”可知,第一段中提到的“稳定嗡嗡声”的目的是示意运送节日包裹的飞机已抵达。故选B。
22.细节理解题。根据倒数第四段“Accuracy is crucial, as a missed package could be lost in the vast landscape.(准确性至关重要,因为一旦包裹没投中,就可能迷失在这片广袤的土地上。)”
根据倒数第三段“She records the drop to help recipients find their gift, though occasionally, a package remains missing, becoming a surprise for a lucky street sweeper.(她会记录下投递位置,帮助收件人找到他们的礼物,不过偶尔也会有包裹一直找不到,最后成为某个幸运的街道清洁工的惊喜。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Since 2021, Alaskan pilot Esther Keim has been dropping these from her plane to remote residents who might lack a traditional holiday meal.(自2021年以来,阿拉斯加飞行员埃丝特·凯姆(Esther Keim)一直从她的飞机上向那些可能吃不上传统节日大餐的偏远地区居民空投这些火鸡。)”和倒数第二段“For recipients, the gift means more than just food. It is a powerful reminder that they are not forgotten.(对于收件人来说,这份礼物不仅仅意味着食物。它是一个有力的提醒,告诉他们并没有被遗忘。)”可知,本文主要讲述了阿拉斯加飞行员Esther Keim自2021年起发起的一项特殊公益活动——“火鸡空投”项目,这个项目给当地居民带来了快乐,让他们觉得自己没有被遗忘,因此从Keim的经历中可以得出的结论是小小的善举能够建立联系并带来快乐。故选A。

Do your part to bridge the gap (鸿沟) between the two cultures of science and the humanities.
根据第四段“Verghese said machines ‘have gone beyond human beings in their ability to care for the patient,’ that is, in diagnosing illnesses and indicating the best treatment. (Verghese说,机器‘在照顾病人的能力上已经超越了人类’,即在诊断疾病和提示最佳治疗方面。)”可知,医疗机器在诊断疾病方面有很大帮助。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“It turned out he had bachelor scurvy, a disease among older men who live alone, which results from a lack of nutrition (缺乏营养). (原来他患有单身坏血病,这是一种老年独居男子中存在的疾病,由缺乏营养引起。)”可知,这位老人患有单身坏血病,这是老年独居男子才会有的疾病,由此可推测出,他独自生活。故选A。
根据第六至九段内容可知,这部分讲述了一位64岁的老人住院的故事,分析了他的病例史、确诊的疾病、生活方式等,并在最后一段中的“My point here is that this diagnosis, as clever as it was, also might have been made much, much earlier had we had a good relationship with this patient and had some sense of who that person was, as an individual. (我的观点是,如果我们与这位患者关系良好,并对他个人有一定的了解,这个诊断虽然很聪明,但也可能早得多。)”陈述了Verghese对这件事的看法,他认为如果医生了解这位老人的个人情况,那么他们可能会更早得出准确的诊断结论。由此可推测出,作者通过讲事实和陈述看法的方式支持自己的观点。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“For medical humanist Dr. Abraham Verghese, the answer is simple: Spend more time getting to know your patients as people. (对于医学人文主义者Abraham Verghese博士来说,答案很简单:花更多的时间了解你的病人。)”和第三段“It takes a doctor who knows a patient’s life history well to make the best use of these tools, Verghese said. And that means paying more attention to human character.
