Rick was a young boy who was angry at everything around him. To calm Rick down, one day his mum came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “Whenever you feel bad about something, paint it instead of getting angry.”
Though not that happy, Rick gave it a try. After creating many paintings, he took his artworks to his mum.
“Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”
“The first is about how some kids show off their new clothes. The next is about my teacher who always tells me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my classmates said I should change my attitude (态度). They all make me so angry.”
Rick’s mum took Rick by her side and told him, “Don’t you see, Rick? You’re getting so angry but you never try to understand why.” Then she explained (解释) carefully, “All the people you were angry at did nothing wrong. The kids were showing off their good clothes but never laughed at you for being poor. Your teacher scolded you but that was because you caused trouble in class. And your classmate was only trying to help you become better.”
“Next time you get angry, take a deep breath, walk away and think about the situation. And when you come back, talk to the person you’re angry at. You might calm down in this way.”
Rick took his mum’s advice and became less angry. He even started to feel happy around other children.

C.See things in a different way. D.Always believe in yourself.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.D 5.C
第一段开头明确交代了母亲的行为目的:“To calm Rick down, one day his mum came home with a canvas (画布) and paint.”,这直接说明给Rick颜料和画布是为了帮他缓解并远离愤怒。
2.第五段中母亲向Rick解释道:“Your teacher scolded you but that was because you caused trouble in class.”,在学生“制造麻烦”的语境下,老师通常会采取批评教育的行为。
3.第五段中母亲说道:“The kids were showing off their good clothes but never laughed at you for being poor.”,这句原话直接证明了选项A“孩子们没有嘲笑Rick的衣服”是正确的。
4.第六段中母亲给出了具体的控诉情绪建议:“…take a deep breath, walk away and think about the situation. And…talk to the person…”,其中包含①“走开”、②“谈话”和③“深呼吸”。
5.通读全文,Rick原本认为周围人都在针对他,但在母亲解释了“All the people you were angry at did nothing wrong.”

“Life is full of the unexpected but everything happens for the best.” My mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen.”
After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to a sports announcer (播音员). I took the bus to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station, but I was turned down every time.
In one studio (演播室), a nice lady told me that big stations didn’t want to accept inexperienced people—“Go to the countryside and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said.
I returned home, Dixon in Illinois. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Smith Ward had opened a store and wanted a local sportsman to manage its sports department. Since I had played high school football in Dixon, I applied. The job sounded just right for me, but I still failed in the interview.
At that moment, mom’s words came to my mind: “Everything happens for the best.” Dad offered me the car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport in Iowa. The program director, named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already had an announcer.
As I left his office, I felt frustrated. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard MacArthur calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone (麦克风) and asked me to broadcast an imaginary (想象的) game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game!
On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words again, “Everything happens for the best. If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And when it happens, it’ll feel doubly good because of all the hard work you’ve had.” At that moment I knew just what she meant.
6. The writer wanted to be_________.
A.a manager B.a sports announcer C.a sportsman D.a radio editor
7. What does the underlined word “turned down” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.received B.refused C.shut D.praise
8. Why couldn’t the writer find a job at big radio stations?
A.Because he was too young.
B.Because he didn’t get college education.
C.Because he hadn’t got enough experience.
D.Because he had no sports background.
9. From the passage, we can infer that _________.
A.the writer did well and got the job at last
B.a kind lady offered the writer a job
C.the writer found a job and his father gave him a car as a gift
D.the writer finally gave up his dream of being a sports announcer
10. What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Life Is Full of Disappointment.
B.Everything Happens for the Best.
C.To Find a Job in Radio Is Difficult.
D.Mother’s Advice Is Useless.
【答案】6.B 7.B 8.C 9.A 10.B
根据原文 “After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to a sports announcer” 可知,作者的目标是成为一名体育播音员。
根据前文 “knocked on the door of every station”(挨个电台敲门求职)以及后文 “big stations didn’t want to accept inexperienced people”(大电台不愿接受没经验的人)可推测,作者每次都被拒绝了。
根据原文 “a nice lady told me that big stations didn’t want to accept inexperienced people” 可知,大电台拒绝作者的原因是他缺乏足够的工作经验。

My Time Management Methods
Time management is really important for students, and I have my own ways to manage time well.
As the saying goes, “Time really matters,” and managing it well makes a big difference.Every morning, I make a to-do list and prioritise urgent and important tasks first, like my school homework. I break big assignments into small steps so they’re easier to finish. I also set aside 20 minutes every day for sports and say “no” to useless activities.
These methods help me finish work on time and reduce my stress. Now I live a more organised life and have enough time for both study and relaxation. I believe good time management can make our life better.
