Recently, researchers in Boston studied students living in college dorms during a heat wave.
Some had central air-conditioning and slept at a cool 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Others slept in
rooms without air-conditioning, where the temperature stayed around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Each morning for nearly two weeks, the students took a few tests.“The effect on the second
group was really striking, ”says study author Cedeno Laurent, “and that's exactly what heat ap
pears to be doing. We saw reductions in the order of 10% in their response time and also their
accuracy.”
Part of this effect may be explained by interrupted sleep. It can be hard to get a good night's
rest if you're not accustomed to the heat, and a lack of sleep could certainly impair reaction time
and focus. But there's much evidence suggesting it may be something about the heat itself that
affects cognition(认知) . A 2021 study showed that as the temperature rose, activity in the para-
sympathetic nervous system, the anti-stress system that can help us stay calm and relaxed, was
lowered.
—38
Multiple factors likely explain how heat worsens the risks, beyond changes in stress h or-
mones(激素) and sleep disturbances. Researchers suggest that heat can make you moody or an-
gry, partly perhaps by raising cortisol(皮质醇) levels and causing a stress response. Plus, oxy-
gen saturation(饱和) levels in the blood are lower as well, which the researchers said could be
expected to result in reduced cognitive performance. Other studies have found an effect from
heat on office workers and on standardized test score performance.
“As we learn to live in a warming world where the summers are getting hotter, we need to
be extra watchful to recognize when conditions are dangerous and take steps to stay safe, ”says
Caleb Dresser, who serves as the director of health care solutions at the Harvard Chan Centre
for Climate, Health and Global Environment.
1.What can be inferred from Laurent's words?
A.High temperature may increase productivity.
B.Air-conditioners playa vital role in the tests.
C.People react differently to a fixed temperature.
D.Students in the hotter rooms performed worse.
2.What does the underlined word“impair”mean?
A.Expose.
B.Influence.
C.Worsen.
D.Reflect.
3.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Academic learning is closely linked to weather.
B.Heat can slow cognition and increase anxiety.
C.Poor cognitive performance can be improved.
D.Bad weather results in reduced productivity.
4.What does Caleb Dresser imply?
A.More attention should be paid to heat.
B.Humans are exposed to global warming.
C.Something must be done to stay cool.
D.Heat-based research is in demand.
B
The small hobby of chocolate is becoming a more costly one. Rapidly increasing prices for
bringing little reward to struggling growers.
The immediate cause is a bad harvest in West Africa一which produces 70% of the world's
beans
reflecting El Nino-linked weather patterns and disease. Major processing plants in Ghana
and Ivory Coast, the main growers, have stopped or reduced operations because they can not af-
ford the beans. But underlying the crisis are longer-term issues including the climate criss and
the inability of farmers to invest in production due to their low incomes.
Many West African growers are being forced out of the business after years of punishing ly
low returns for their work and as trees come to the end of their lifecycle-often selling land to
gold miners, resulting in severe environmental degradation(恶化) . Latin American farmers are
rushing to plant cocoa due to the higher prices, abandoning other crops and deforest ing new are
as. But the likelihood, if production booms and the system does not change, is that by the time
their new trees bear fruit, prices may be falling again.
As serious as the situation looks, the attention demanded by the rocketing price of cocoa,
and the introduction of EU Deforestation Regulation offer an opportunity. Faced with global
heating, increasing conflict and energy price instability, depending on the free market is a poor
bet. Treating food issues as financial instruments hurts farmers, destroys forests and worsens
the instability of supply.
—39
The solution in this case is a commitment to stable minimum prices for cocoa farmers and
long-term contracts. This would help to lift growers out of poverty and, in doing so, tackle oth
er problems. Sustainable production is essential, and will even benefit consumers in the long
run. It can't be achieved by letting the free market run its course.
5.What might be the consequence of rising cocoa prices?
B.Cocoa farmers will benefit greatly.
A.Some sma producers wi fan.
C.Fewer people will eat chocolate.
D.Cocoa production will increase.
6.What will happen if more Latin American farmers plant cocoa?
A.Other crops will boost production.
B.Cocoa prices will go down.
C.The environment will be improved.
D.Old cocoa trees will be abandoned.
7.What is the author's attitude towards the free market approach to cocoa problems?
A.Defensive.
B.Concerned.
C.Optimistic.
D.In different.
8.What does the author suggest in order to solve the cocoa problem?
A.Allowing the free market to work.
B.Giving cocoa farmers more freedom.
C.Helping cocoa growers out of poverty.
D.Promising a steady guaranteed price.

thing from the SkyMall catalog(目录) .(例如, 他们
“To my brothers and me, they seemed to be bent on
course, some 20 years later, Icon-
sider traveling with my parents, now both in their
60s, to be the utmost privilege.(当然, 大约20年后,
Neither amI, and every day that pas-
ses brings us closer to our last.(我也不是, 每过一天,
母不再是不可战胜的, 与B项“I know they're no lon-
ger unbeatable(我知道他们不再是不可战胜的) ”表达
3.D [根据下文“After all, even if you're the apple that
fell right under the tree, traveling with the people
who raised you is n't always easy.(毕竞, 即使你是正
美的, 与D项“That's not to say that all of our trips
have been without flaws(这并不是说我们所有的旅行
4.G [根据空前一句提到的“traveling with the people
who raised you is n't always easy(和养育你的人一起
come back closer than ever(她的客户回来后比以往任
可能增进关系, G选项“There are always challenges
as we are dealing with different physical abilities and
5.C [根据上文“She sees traveling together as the per
1
fect opportunity for getting to know each other for
who we are now, with‘now'being the key word.(她
C项“After all, as humans, we're always evolving(毕
