Ryder was born with a physical disability and has never be en able to walk. He started using
a wheelchair when he was two years old. When he turned five, he started attending elementary
school in June 2019, and every day had to be pushed to the end of the road to wait for his school
bus by his parents, Tim and Nike a. If he was running late for the bus, he had to wait for up to
15 minutes out whatever the weather was.
In September, Ryder's father, Tim, put up a patio(露台) umbrella at the end of his drive
way to provide some shelter. However, with the wind and rain here in New England, it didn't
help much and Ryder still got wet and cold. Desperately, Tim who runs an electronics company,
placed a post on Facebook, turning to his community to see if anyone could have an old bus h ut
(棚) which helps to protect Ryder from the bad weather.
After knowing about Ryder's problem, three local students in Bradford, Rhode Island, de-
cided to build a new bus h ut for Ryder during their construction lessons, worrying that snow
would be falling soon and Ryder would have a rough time. They worked hard on the project for
several weeks, learning new skills through YouTube to create the structure . About $ 300 worth
of wood was donated and the rest of the materials were purchased by Tim for $600. The hut
was so huge that it could accommodate both Ryder and one of his parents or a nurse comfort a
bly, and was finally delivered to their home six weeks later on November 2.
"We were shocked. It was much bigger than we expected.Ryder loved it.He did like to go
out in it every day before school,Tim said. The family sent a photo of Ryder in the bus shelter
and thanked the teens for their hard work. This project brought his community together,show-
ing that there is kindness in this world.

The race skywards began in America. In the late 1800s,industrialization had driven urban
populations and land prices up,making tall buildings increasingly cost-effective.Like all major
shifts in architecture, the trend was supported by engineering. The development of steel frames
made it easier to build tall. The invention of the lift, meanwhile, made living in higher floors far
more convenient,
Though similar in shape, today's skyscrapers look little like those built in the first half of
the 20th century. This is mostly thanks to the curtain wall.Postwar developments in manufac-
turing()meant that huge sheets of glass could be produced quickly and uniformly, and the
curtain wall soon became the front of high-rises.As well as allowing for greater floor space and
more natural light, glass surfaces help buildings bear greater wind loads.
There are now 191 completed skyscrapers that are at least 300 meters tall. But that doesn't
mean our cities will grow taller indefinitely. While each additional story adds sellable floor
space, construction costs also rise. All buildings reach a point where adding an extra floor will
cost more money than it generates.
This reality can certainly be felt in America.Though skyscrapers began as a US phenome-
non and continued increasing there in the 1960s and 1970s,the Middle East and Asia now domi-
nate high-rise construction. This is partly due to the lower construction costs in Asian and other
non-Western countries. However,it may also demonstrate that skyscrapers are about more than
the return on investment-they are a matter of branding. And in some cities, building tall can be
a necessity.
The next big challenge facing architects goes beyond height:At a time when buildings and
their construction account for more than a third of the world's energy consumption and contrib-
ute about 40%of greenhouse gas emission(),there are new environment-friendly costs to
consider.

Always the outsider?
One of the things I used to fear was being the new girl in the office-in the kitchen making
coffee while the in-crowd chatted about the weekend.I worried that I wasn't good enough or
smart enough.1 I'd struggle for words while trying to look cool.Back at school,I was best
friends with Kate and Cathy until we had to walk across the road in twos, and guess who was
left out?I've always been the outsider from school days to office life.Or is that the story I have
told myself?
As in so many areas of life, the only thing you can control is your response.I remind myself
of what Eleanor Roosevelt said:2 The only person making me feel like an outsider is me.
These are the lessons I have learned along the way:
OStarting anywhere new,you just have to find your people, the ones that get you.3
It's OK to take your time and figure out if you're the right fit for each other.Have faith that you
will find the right people for you.
OVery often it's our belief systems that tell us we don't fit in.We are replaying the stories
烯
from childhood and need to rewrite the script().4 When are you assuming that you'll
be on your own? What fears are you projecting onto yourself?
OPractice self-acceptance.Remind yourself that it's OK to have a different way of operat-
ing in the world.
O 5 Sometimes, interactions with random strangers can help us feel more confident in
all our relationships. For example, volunteering can make us feel connected and give us a sense
of belonging.
A.Don't charge into friendships,though.
B.Start noticing your patterns of mentality.
C.If I was asked a question,panic would set in.
D.No one can make you feel lower without your agreement.
E.The feeling of being an outsider would force me to shut up.
F.Try doing something to take yourself out of your comfort zone.
G.We all feel a little lost and awkward sometimes-you're not the only one.
