听第 10 段材料,回答第 17至 20题。
Hello everyone! I’m Li Hua, a Grade 8 student. Reading has always been my favorite thing to do. Among all kinds of books, I love fantasy novels best—they take me to magical worlds and let me meet interesting characters.
Besides reading, I also do volunteer work. I’ve been a volunteer at my community library since last September. Every Saturday afternoon, I go there to help. My main job is to help visitors find English novels they like, especially classic ones. Last month, I recommended The Secret Garden to a group of primary school kids. They were so excited to hear the story that they asked me to read a small part for them. I’ve read many classic books, like The Time Machine and Oliver Twist. But The Secret Garden is the one I like to share most—it tells a warm story about friendship and growth. The library volunteer work makes me feel great. I not only get to read more books but also help others discover the joy of reading. To me, sharing my love for books with people around is really meaningful. It’s a wonderful way to connect with others through great stories!

书面表达
Hello, everyone!
It’s my great honor to be here to give a speech about my volunteer experience.
Volunteering has become a special part of my life. Last Sunday, I volunteered at a local community center, helping organize a fun day for children.
I played games with the children, talked with them and listened to their stories. One little girl even shared with me how she loved to draw and dreamed of becoming an artist. The children’s happy faces filled me with joy. I realized that I could bring happiness to others through my small actions.
Volunteering has not only taught me the importance of community service but also helped me develop skills like teamwork and communication. It was a wonderful experience that I will remember forever.
Thanks for listening!

This great novel tells the adventurous story of a Tang Dynasty monk, Xuanzang, who travels west to India with his three disciples to obtain Buddhist scriptures. 51 The most exciting part for me is how the Monkey King uses his intelligence and magic to protect his master from danger.

What impresses me most is how the characters grow and become better people.

Hey everyone! Today I’ll tell you about a cool waterfall—Victoria Falls! It’s between two countries in Africa: Zambia and Zimbabwe. What’s special about it? It’s super wide—way wider than many other waterfalls! When there’s lots of water, the sound of the waterfall is so loud—like thunder! That’s why locals call it “The Smoke That Thunders”: the water spray looks like smoke, and the sound is like a big thunderclap. On sunny days, you can see a bright rainbow over the waterfall too! Visitors love getting close to it—you’ll feel like you’re standing in a light rain (that’s the waterfall’s spray!). It’s such a fun and amazing place!

My Way to Deal with Bad Emotions
Dear classmates,
Good morning! Today, I’d like to share my way to deal with bad emotions in my growth.
Last month, I failed my math test and felt really down. I also had a fight with my best friend over a small thing. At that time, I was so sad that I didn’t want to talk to anyone and had no energy to do my homework. Then I tried three simple ways to cheer myself up. First, I wrote all my feelings in a diary. It helped me let out my sadness. Next, I listened to my favorite pop songs. They made me feel relaxed quickly. Then, I talked to my mom. She encouraged me a lot and gave me good advice. Besides, I climbed the mountain to relieve stress. After doing these, I felt much better.
I think learning to manage bad emotions is very important for our growth. Now I know how to get along with my emotions well. It not only makes me happier but also makes me stronger.
Thank you!

第二节 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Growing up is not always easy. Teenagers often face pressure from schoolwork and relationships, which can make them feel upset easily. Sometimes, you may have a quarrel with your classmates, or even argue with your parents about small things like staying up late. Although these moments are painful, they are important parts of growing up.
It’s normal to feel anger when things don’t go your way, but you need to learn to control it. If you speak out hurtful words in a hurry, you may break the relationship with people around you. Until you calm down and think twice, you will not realize how much damage your words have caused. You should listen to others patiently so that you can understand their ideas better.
Clearly, everyone has their own purpose when they do something. Your parents may set rules for you because they care about your safety, not because they want to stop you. When you have different opinions, try to express your thoughts politely instead of shouting at them. Every decision you make can change your relationships, so think carefully before you act.
Some teenagers choose to keep their negative feelings to themselves, which is not a good way. Sharing your problems with a trusted friend or a family member can make you feel joyful again. Though it takes courage to talk about your feelings, you will be thankful for doing so later. Remember, no one is alone in dealing with teenage emotions.

There may be no place more dangerous than Death Valley(死亡谷). Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America.
Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, temperature often gets over 46℃. Even a lake there has turned into salt crystals(晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
The weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, but nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals(哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives here. To survive, some plants’ roots(根部)can go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats(更格卢鼠)get the water they need from flowers.
Death Valley really makes a lot of surprise!
( )46. Why can the rocks “walk” on their own in Death Valley?
A. Because it gets less than two feet of rain a year in Death Valley.

Some people believe that colors can influence our moods. You may wonder whether it is true. In fact, colors can change our moods and make us feel happy or sad, energetic or sleepy. This article explains what characteristics colors represent(代表).
Calm colors
Have you ever walked into a room and felt relaxed? It could be because the walls were painted blue. Blue is a calm color. It brings peace to our mind and body. Blue can also represent sadness, so you may say "I'm feeling blue" when you are feeling sad. White is another calm color. It is also the color of purity. Many women like to wear white on their wedding day.
Warm colors
Some colors, such as orange and yellow, can make you feel warm. People in cold areas prefer warm colors in their homes to create a warm and comfortable feeling. Orange represents joy. It can cheer you up when you are feeling sad. Yellow is the color of the sun, so it can remind you of a warm sunny day and yellow is also the color of wisdom. Some people prefer this color when they hope for success.
Energetic colors
When you feel tired or weak, you should wear energetic colors like green. Green can give you energy, as it is the color of nature and represents new life. However, it is also the color of envy, so we may say someone is "green with envy".
Strong colors
If you require strength in either body or mind, colors like red may help you. Red is the color of heat. It represents power and strong feelings. Wearing red can also make it easier to take action. This may help when you are having difficulty making a decision.

In today's digital(数字的) world, many students spend most of their free time on screens. But I've discovered that screen-free activities can be just as enjoyable and more helpful.
One of my favorite screen-free activities is cooking. I learned to make simple dishes from my mom, like stir-fried eggs and noodles. Now I can cook for my family when needed. It's satisfying to create something delicious with my own hands.
I also enjoy building things with my hands. I've made birdhouses and small bookshelves using basic tools and wood. These projects don't require expensive materials---just some imagination and effort.
Gardening is another activity I love. I planted some flowers in our yard last spring, and I water them and watch them grow every day. It's amazing to see how a small seed becomes a beautiful flower. Gardening teaches me responsibility and patience as I care for living things
These screen-free activities help me develop practical skills, be more creative and appreciate the real world around me. I feel more balanced when I spend less time on screens and more time doing hands-on activities.

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long cold rainy days. Let's discover the science behind sunlight.
Sunshine makes your body produce a chemical called serotonin(血清素). When you get sunlight, your body will make more serotonin, which keeps you in good spirits. At night, with little or no light, your body produces another chemical—melatonin(褪黑素). It helps your body relax and feel tired, preparing you for a good night's sleep. You need to keep a balance between these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That's why those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are easier to get seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial(人工的) lights for some time.
Sunshine has more roles in life. For example, it helps your body make Vitamin D, which is important for health. There is more science about sunlight to discover. Next time when sunshine is on your shoulder, think: "Why do we love sunshine?"
46. What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Serotonin B. Melatonin C. Sunshine D. Light
47. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

I have enjoyed playing Chinese chess since my childhood. This is not just because playing it is fun. It is also because of a valuable lesson. 51
When I was a child, Grandpa taught me how to play the game. He was good at playing Chinese chess. We often played together.
One day, my grandfather said loudly, “Check (将军)!” I realized that I lost it again. I didn’t feel sad but puzzled (困惑的). 52 Grandpa said, “Look before you leap (跳).” He took out a notebook where he had recorded our games, and pointed out a situation. Then he asked me to think it over. 53 I did so. After reviewing the game, I realized my mistake. I truly understood the importance of “looking before leaping”.
54 During these competitions, “Look before you leap” was always front and center in my mind. When it was my turn, I would take a deep breath. Then I would think it over carefully. I would think over all the possibilities five moves ahead, which worked well. I hardly made mistakes. Once, I even beat an experienced competitor. 55
I believe that with my grandfather’s precious (珍贵的) lesson, I will keep improving. His words—“Look before you leap”—will be always in my mind.
A. I wondered why I was always losing.
B. And until now, I have won a few prizes.
C. I once learned this lesson from the game.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. A total of 126 people were killed and 188 others got injured. How terrible! If you’re indoors during an earthquake, here are some ways to protect yourself.
Drop to the floor.
Earthquakes always happen without much warning, so it’s recommended that you drop to the floor as soon as an earthquake happens.
Take cover.
Get under a strong table or desk. If possible, stay away from glass windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall. If there isn’t a table or a desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch(蹲)in an inside corner of the building.
Hold on.
The ground may be shaking and objects could be falling. Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve been under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you are unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms.
Remain inside.
Studies have shown that most injuries happen when people try to change the place of hiding or when the place is crowded and everyone has a goal to get outside. So remain inside until it’s safe to get out.

During the party, Nancy tried to speak French as much as possible, which made the French friends happy. She found that food and culture were safe conversation topics. Later, Nancy told her friend Diana about her experience. She advised Diana to follow local customs when traveling abroad.

Dear Lisa,
Welcome to China! In order to help you have a wonderful experience in China. I’ll share some etiquette tips with you.
For greetings, we often greet with “Nihao” and a smile and a light handshake is polite too. At dinner, don’t stick chopsticks in rice , it’s impolite. And we should wait for elders to start eating first. When giving gifts, small souvenirs are perfect, but avoid clocks or white flowers. While chatting, we can talk about food and travel. Don’t ask about age, salary or personal life.
I hope these tips can help you!
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Peter,
I am very glad to hear from you. Now I will give you some advice on how to stay healthy.
Staying healthy is like building a strong house, and we need good materials from four parts. First, food is our fuel. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and drink plenty of water. Try to eat less junk food like chips and candy. Second, exercise makes us strong. Use your free time to be active! Ride a bike, play ball with friends, or just dance in your room. Find a sport you enjoy. Third, good habits protect us. Get enough sleep (8-10 hours for us!) and wash your hands often to keep germs away. Finally, a happy mind is important. Talk to someone if you feel stressed. Listen to music or read a book to relax.
If we take care of all these parts, we can build a strong and healthy life!
