When we think about communication, we usually imagine people talking or animals making sounds. But do you know that plants can also “talk” in their own special ways? Scientists have discovered that plants have amazing methods to share information with each other and even with insects.
The most common way plants communicate is through chemicals. When an insect starts eating a plant’s leaves, the plant gives off special chemicals into the air. Nearby plants can feel these chemicals and understand that danger is near. They then start producing their own poisons to protect themselves before the insects reach them. So does the attacked plant. It’s like a silent warning system that works without any sound.
Some plants have developed even cleverer communication methods. For example, when caterpillars (毛毛虫) attack corn plants, the corn gives off a chemical message that calls tiny wasps (黄蜂). These wasps come and lay their eggs inside the caterpillars, which stops the caterpillars from eating more leaves. The plant basically calls for “bodyguards” to protect it!
Plants can also communicate through their roots (根). Scientists have discovered that plants connected through underground root internet can share information. If one plant doesn’t get enough water, it can send warning messages through these networks to other plants. The warned plants will then adjust how they use water to prepare for dry conditions.
So next time you walk through a garden or forest, remember: though everything seems quiet, there’s actually a whole conversation happening right under your feet and in the air around you!
