Imagine you’re sitting in front of the television watching a movie. A famous actor plays a role in it. Although you do know the actor, you just can’t speak out his name at this moment.
We use the phrase “on the tip (尖) of my tongue (舌)” when we’re sure we know a word, but can’t remember it at that moment. Scientists often simply call the experience the “tip-of-the-tongue state” or the TOT state for short.
Why does it happen? Well, producing language is not a simple process: our brain has to translate abstract ideas (抽象观念) into the words we need. “This normally goes smoothly,” Karin Humphreys of Canada’s McMaster University explained. “But in this case, some problems have appeared in the process. As a result, we can’t recall the words we want.”
TOT states can even happen more than once for the same word. In a 2008 study, Humphreys found that the longer you spend trying to think of a word before being reminded what it is, the more likely you are to have another TOT state when you try to remember that word again later. In a 2015 study, she also found that people are less likely to have another TOT state if they remember the word themselves rather than being told what it is.
Other studies found that people can actually remember the word they want more than 90% of the time. And it just takes minutes to recover the memory from the TOT state.
Humphreys said TOT states often happen when people are tired. Age seems to play a part, too. A study found that TOT states are more common among older people. Young people aged 18 to 24 experience them about once or twice a week, but those aged 80 to 92 experience them twice as often.
16.The writer begins the passage by ________.
A.asking a question B.giving an example
C.making a comparison D.telling his own story
17.The TOT state is the experience that ________.
A.you can’t recall a word you know
B.you always forget what you have done
C.you know a word, but cannot write it down
D.you have a wrong memory of the past events
18.What did the 2015 study find out about TOT states?
A.How to treat TOT states.
B.Why people have TOT states.
C.How often people have TOT states.
D.How people are less likely to have TOT states again.
19.The underlined word “recover” has the closest meaning to “________”.
A.bring back B.cut off C.talk back D.put off
20.Which of the following may Humphreys agree with?
A.You won’t have another TOT state for the same word.
B.Healthy people have TOT states once or twice a month.
C.Tired people experience more problems recalling words.
D.The tip-of-the-tongue experience doesn’t increase with age.
C
Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come. The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.
According to WMO, temperatures on Antarctica (南极洲) just hit 18.3℃, which is higher than the record of 17.5℃ in March, 2015. Moreover, temperatures in this area have warmed about 3℃ over the last 50 years. Although such temperatures might be considered suitable for a picnic or a hiking trip, this is Antarctica we are talking about. It is home to the most inhospitable environment on the planet because it is supposed to be a terribly cold place. In fact, the average temperature of its central area is -57℃.
Besides, many places are experiencing the bad weather this summer. Australia is undergoing its worst drought (干旱) since the 1930s, leaving forest fires burning so long and causing many deaths. Meanwhile in Europe, crops (庄稼) in the northwest are suffering the driest weather in the past 80 years. Recently West Texas in America has also gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years, while floods have hit Eastern and Southern China.
“Climate change is bad for us human beings, which causes direct health problems. I’m afraid there will be more common events like the one that 30,000 to 50,000 persons died in Europe in 2003 due to the heat wave there,” Professor Schwartz said. “It will also cause more air pollution, diseases and lack of clean water and so on.”
21.What doesn’t bring down the number of polar bears according to this passage?
A.Hunting. B.Climate change.
C.The sea ice loss. D.The Arctic ice melting.
22.What do you think of Antarctica?
A.It’s comfortable to live in. B.It’s friendly to live in.
C.It’s unhealthy to live in. D.It’s unfit to live in.
23.Which place experienced drought this year in the passage?
A.Egypt. B.America. C.South Korea. D.China.
24.What can you get from this passage?
A.Antarctica is a good choice for a hiking trip.
B.Terrible weather led to wildfires burning in Europe.
C.Lots of people lost their lives because of the heat wave.
D.The temperatures on the Antarctica hit the highest in March, 2015.
25.What is the main idea for this passage?
A.The whole planet is drier and drier.
B.Antarctica is warmer and warmer.
C.Climate change is getting worse and worse.
D.The number of polar bears is smaller and smaller.

What are some things in your life that give you too much stress? Find out what you can do about it.
School Work and Grades
As a student, school work and grades are at the top of your stress list. Even if your school grades are not so bad, you may still fear that you may not do as well as you expect. A heavy learning burden is another cause for worry.
Why not take it easy by leaving extra time to study and take frequent breaks to avoid being so tired? Manage your time carefully and do not put things off.
Friendships and Relationships
Have you ever been concerned with not having enough friends, or not being in the same class as your best friends? These, along with other issues such as peer pressure and interpersonal disagreements and arguments, are other common stress.
It is important to know how to choose your circle of friends wisely. Do not ‘“hide” in your own “nest”. Make friends when you join school activities. Make plans to meet with your friends from other classes during break time. Know that everyone is unique and different---do not compare yourself with others.
Poor Diet and Lack of Sleep
Do you know that eating too much fast food and junk food can lead to mood changes, lack of energy and other negative effects? These convenience foods, which have less nutrition (营养) may cause other health issues. Some students suffer from sleep problems too. When that happens, they behave poorly in class.
Learn to make wise food choices that you can enjoy. Well plan and arrange your daily routine. Complete all school tasks and go to bed at a set time every night. Avoid playing computer games or smartphone before you sleep. Do see a doctor if your sleeping problems continue.

根据文章第一段“The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.” 故选A。
22.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“It is home to the most inhospitable environment on the planet because it is supposed to be a terribly cold place. In fact, the average temperature of its central area is -57℃.”可知,南极洲是地球上最不适宜居住的地方,因为它非常寒冷,中央地区的平均气温是 -57℃,所以可以推断出南极洲不适合居住。故选D。
23.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Recently West Texas in America has also gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years”可知,今年美国得克萨斯州西部经历了70多年来最严重的干旱。故选B。
24.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“I’m afraid there will be more common events like the one that 30,000 to 50,000 persons died in Europe in 2003 due to the heat wave there”可知,2003年欧洲因热浪导致3万到5万人死亡,所以可以得出很多人因为热浪失去了生命。故选C。
25.主旨大意题。文章开头“Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come.”就点明了主题,即糟糕的天气事件正在对地球造成危害,专家警告未来情况会更糟,接着文章具体阐述了气候变化带来的各种影响,所以文章的主旨是气候变化越来越严重。故选C。

A.Hunting. B.Climate change.
C.The sea ice loss. D.The Arctic ice melting.

A.It’s comfortable to live in. B.It’s friendly to live in.
C.It’s unhealthy to live in. D.It’s unfit to live in.

A.Egypt. B.America. C.South Korea. D.China.
