I was in the kitchen when Mom asked me to watch the kids because she had to do the dishes in a restaurant. I knew it was more important than swimming. We now lived in a small old mobile home.
Still, I asked, “Couldn’t Julie watch them?”
“She can help, but she’s only ten. I feel better with a fifteen-year-old at home.”
So, I wasn’t playing in the pool but watching my five-year-old sister and three-year-old brother. As a boy, I usually don’t mind watching the kids. Taking care of children really wasn’t the problem. The problem was the weather. In such hot weather, it was really hard for us.
At about ten o’clock, I took the kids out to play. There were some big gray clouds in the sky but I didn’t think anything of it. After about an hour, I found the sky was turning dark green. It was a real tornado (龙卷风)!
I tried hard to remember what we learned in class. That’s it! If you are outside, find the lowest (最低的) place you can.
Our small mobile home was not a perfect place. I thought of the ditch (沟) not far away. “We have to make it to the ditch.” As Julie picked Dougie up, I got Lyssa and a few towels (毛巾).
It was like what we saw in a movie. People were running for their lives. My legs were on fire. Julie cried as she ran, but I couldn’t hear her because of the big noise of the tornado-just see her mouth open as a low sound touched my ears.
“Get down!” I shouted and made everyone lie down, and I covered them with the towels.
Rubbish rained down on us. The noise became louder. I had Dougie under one arm and Lyssa under the other and one hand holding Julie’s arm. The tornado got everything up in the sky, including our towels. We were afraid.

C.How the family found the towels. D.How the boy got out of the ditch.
When Mother and Totto-chan went in, the man in the office got up from his chair.
With a quick bow (鞠躬), Totto-chan asked him, “What are you?” He laughed and answered, “I’m the headmaster of this school.”
Totto-chan was glad. “Oh, that’s great,” she said, “because I want to ask you for help. I’d like to come to your school.”
The headmaster turned to Mother. “You may go home now. I want to talk to Totto-chan.” Totto-chan had a moment’s worry, but soon felt she could get along all right with this man. “Well, then, I’ll leave her with you,” Mother said bravely, and she went out.
When they were both sitting down close together, he said, “Now then, tell me all about yourself and anything you want to talk about.”
“Anything I like?” Totto-chan was happy, so she began talking about all she wanted. She went on and on. The headmaster would laugh, nod, and say, “And then?” And Totto-chan kept on talking. But finally she found that she finished saying all. She sat with her mouth closed trying hard to think of something.
But just then the headmaster got up, placed his large, warm hand on her head, and said, “Well, now you’re a student of this school.”
At that moment Totto-chan felt she met someone she really liked for the very first time in her life. And the headmaster seemed just as interested in what she said as she was.
It was time for lunch. The headmaster listened to Totto-chan for four whole hours! Never before did any grown-up listen to her for as long as that. The headmaster, however, made her feel safe and warm and happy. She wanted to stay with him forever.
That’s how Totto-chan felt about Headmaster Sosaku Kobayashi that first day. And, luckily, the headmaster felt the same about her.

One day after school, I went to the teachers’ office to see my teacher, but nobody was there. When I was about to leave, I noticed a piece of paper on the floor. I picked it up and saw the words “FINAL-TERM EXAM” at the top. I put the paper into my school bag secretly and ran out of the room.
After I came back home, I took out the paper quickly. It was the exam paper(试卷) of my History. I felt excited. I took out my History book and started working on the answer. I had never answered any questions so carefully.
On the day of the History exam, I went into the exam hall happily. When I got the paper, I dreamt of getting the highest mark in the whole grade and could not help smiling. “My History teacher always told me to work hard and get better grades, but I let him down time and time again. This time I will give him a big surprise,” I thought.
When the teacher said we could start, I turned the paper over. To my surprise, all the questions were different. In the end, I didn’t finish the paper. I felt very sad. After the exam, I ran to the toilet, took out the paper and carefully read it from the top. Oh! It was last year’s exam paper. I read all the questions but I didn’t read the date.

You have two friends, A and B.Both of them have learned English for some years. Both of them are clever young men, and both are thirsty for learning English. But now they got very different results (成绩) from so many years of study: A can write short letters and read easy news but cannot read passages in the classics (古典作品), while B can read here and there in some classics but cannot write short letters or read easy news. Readers, which of the two friends would you like to be?
I believe you would like to be A, not B.In fact, you should be A.But I am sorry to find that among Chinese learners of English there seem to be more like B than like A.The trouble mainly lies in what to read.
Well, what do you read? What is your chief reading matter (主要读物)? Is it a novel (小说) or a lot of passages written more than a hundred years ago? If it is, I advise you to change it for something else. Your chief reading matter must have been written less than a hundred years ago, a few weeks ago if you can find them. It must be written in very simple English, and it would be the best if the writer is an Englishman or an American.
I am not going to give a list of books here. But I think I have to give some advice. Your chief reading matter need not be a literary masterpiece (文学巨著). The writer doesn’t need to be very famous. You may find that I only talk about what your chief reading matter should be. As a beginner in English, of course you have a book or two for your chief reading matter. And you should also read something else, which may be a little more difficult. But remember, do not choose those passages written hundreds of years ago.
1.Why does the writer use two friends as an example?
A.To show a reading problem. B.To list good points of reading.
C.To invite people to read more. D.To tell the meaning of reading.
2.What kind of book does the writer advise?
A.The writer comes from Japan. B.It was from five hundred years ago.
C.It’s a long and famous classic. D.The language is easy to understand.
3.Who may be the readers of the passage?
A.An artist who works in England. B.A man who studies English deeply.
C.An American who starts to write. D.A student who starts to learn English.
4.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.What we can read B.Why is reading important
C.Books you can’t miss D.Writers you have to know
What will you do today? How much time will you spend at school? How long will your mealtimes take? What will you do in your free time?
Leisure time is time that is free from school, work and chores. It is a time when you can do what you like. After eating, sleeping and working, most people still have about five hours of leisure time each day. Very young children spend less time working each day, but they spend longer sleeping.
There are many different leisure activities. Some you can do on your own and some with other people. You can do some indoors and others outdoors. Some of the leisure activities you can do on your own are reading or drawing. There are even more activities you can carry out with other people. Group leisure activities include playing team sports or going to the cinema with friends.
Most leisure activities, like sports, need special areas of land or special buildings. Football fields, tennis courts and swimming pools need special areas. Cinemas, clubs and other activities need special buildings. All of these are big users of space, and land is expensive in town and city centres. That is why most sports grounds are in the countryside or away from the city center, where there is more space and where land is less expensive.
All the leisure activities have some effect (影响) on the environment (环境). The leisure activities that have the biggest effect are those that use engines (发动机) and so make air pollution (污染). Motor racing and similar sports can be very bad to the environment.
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By asking questions. B.By showing facts. C.By giving numbers. D.By using pictures.
2.Which of the following can be called as a leisure time?
A.Daniel listens to some music while doing homework.
B.Simon helps old people cleans their flats at weekends.
C.Neil chats over a cup of tea with family in the garden.
D.Femi collects eggs with his sister in their farmhouse.
3.What do we know about leisure activities?
A.All of the leisure activities have very little pollution.
B.People do most of the sports away from the city centre.
C.Very young people have more time to do leisure activities.
D.You must go with other people when doing outdoor activities.
4.Which book may the passage come from?
A.Amazing animals B.My sweet hometown C.Chinese folk art D.Tips about having fun
Traditionally, people think eating out as a social activity, and many think it strange to eat by oneself. However, these years, the stigma (羞耻) around eating alone has become weeker in countries like the US and Germany.
According to OpenTable, a restaurant reservation (预定) platform, solo dining (一人食) reservations in the US have gone up by 29 percent over the last two years. In Germany, they’ve risen by 18 percent this year and in the UK by 14 percent.
Why is this happening? One reason is that more people live alone. Another reason is that people want more “me time” to relax and enjoy themselves. OpenTable CEO Debby Soo told AP that solo dining is part of a bigger fashion of taking care of yourself and enjoying your own company (陪伴).
Some people think eating alone is a good thing. Jay Rayner, a restaurant critic, says eating alone is not a niché activity any more. Instead, it can be a popular joy. You can enjoy your food and drink without sharing or worrying about others. “A great plate of food, a good bottle of wine you don’t have to share,” he said.
But in some countries, like South Korea (韩国), eating alone was once thought not good. South Koreans usually eat with friends or family. Eating alone might make others think you don’t belong to a social group. However, even in South Korea, more people are starting to accept (接受) eating alone as a common thing.
Some people might find it uncomfortable to eat alone because of strange looks from other diners and waiters. But the important thing is that eating alone isn’t sad. It can be fun and relaxing. As Rayner said, “When I eat alone, I’m here to enjoy my time and my own thoughts. I’m here for some great things to eat and drink. That’s all.”
1.What does the underlined phrase “a niché activity” most probably mean in paragraph 4?
A.Something special B.Something popular
C.Something traditional D.Something modern
2.In South Korea, what did people traditionally think about eating alone?
A.It was good. B.It was not a good thing.
C.It was very popular. D.It was a way to make friends.
3.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Why people like to eat with others. B.Changes in how people view eating alone.
C.The best places to eat alone. D.How to make restaurant reservations.
4.What might happen in the future according to the article?
A.Restaurants might design special areas for solo diners.
B.People will choose not to eat with friends any more.
C.Eating alone will become expensive.
D.People will not cook for their family and friends at home.
The Chinese pingfeng (folding screen) is a traditional Chinese furniture (家具). It dates back to the Han Dynasty. “Pingfeng” means “keeping away from wind”, which tells us its use right from the start.
As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens usually is a dragon. It means light, growth, and water that gives life. It also stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The peacock (孔雀), a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It’s a symbol of long life. Beautiful flowers, which mean being rich and good luck, are also a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family should not see or be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close male (男性) cousins. When a young man came to visit, she could secretly watch him from behind the screen which completely hid her. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If both the daughter and her father liked the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry him.
Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, which adds style to them.
1.What was the pingfeng used for at the very beginning?
A.Protecting people from wind. B.Dividing (分) a room.
C.Making a room beautiful. D.Hiding a person.
2.Which design is a symbol of nobility and power?
A.The dragon. B.The peacock. C.The water. D.The flowers.
3.How does the writer show more about pingfeng in Paragraph 3?
A.By listing facts. B.By telling a story.
C.By telling the result (结果). D.By showing differences.
4.What’s the main idea of this passage? The writer wants to tell us ________.
A.the designs of the pingfeng in the past B.a beautiful story of the pingfeng
C.the use of the pingfeng in modern homes D.the hidden beauty of the pingfeng
Are you a little shy when it comes to raising your hand in class? In fact, many people will have the same feeling from time to time. With all attention on you, you can be too afraid to speak up.
However, if you can break through your fear, we promise (承诺) you can benefit (受益) a lot. According to a government study, some students are falling behind because they’re too shy to put their hands up when a teacher asks a question. So try to raise your hand!
To start with, you’ll realize the power of being wrong. Nobody is right all the time. Your teacher will be happy to see your participation (参与) and won’t punish (惩罚) you for being wrong. He or she will explain (解释) why you’re wrong. You’ll learn something new. Chances are, other students think the same thing as you, but don’t speak up. Not only do you help yourself, but you help your shy classmates, too.
Besides, your teacher will know you’re interested in learning. Participating in class shows that you are not falling asleep behind your textbook. This is beneficial to you and your teacher. Your teacher will enjoy your interaction (互动) during the lesson and will remember your active (积极的) participation.
What’s more, you’ll have fun talking with your classmates. When you and other classmates are raising hands to answer questions, it makes the class more interesting and allows you to actively engage with the lesson. Class time will fly by and your mind won’t be watching the clock every 5 minutes.
Most importantly, you’ll know that you’ve actually learned the material (材料). One of the best ways to prove (证明) that you actually know something is by talking about it. Speaking up in class shows that you are trying to understand or have understood what you’ve been taught.
Don’t be shy or afraid to raise your hand in class. Nobody is judging (评判) you seriously. It’ll finally pay off.
1.The underlined phrase “engage with” in Paragraph 5 means “______”.
A.worry about B.take care of C.think about D.take part in
2.The writer probably thinks that ______.
A.being active in class is helpful to your study
B.teachers should help students learn more in class
C.students like talking with each other better than answering questions
D.speaking up in class means understanding the material very well
3.Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To encourage (鼓励) students to speak up in class.
B.To question about the material learned in class.
C.To talk about reasons why students are shy in class.
D.To tell us the ways to help students raise hands in class.

A.Do the dishes. B.Clean the kitchen. C.Go swimming. D.Help Julie with work.

I used to think my neighbourhood was boring. It was full of tall grey buildings and busy streets. I wished I could live in a palace like the kings in the stories.

C.Books you can’t miss D.Writers you have to know
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.D 4.A
