(南京专用)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章后的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
We often hear a parent shout, “Tidy your room!” It’s thought that an unmade bed and messy (杂乱的) floor can make other family members stressed (有压力的).
A study found that mess and managing it are important to happiness, while a messy living space can make people more stressed, especially women. On the other hand, some studies say mess may be the sign of creativity. So what do you think, is it OK to have a messy bedroom? Recently, this topic has caused hot discussions online.
Yes — It’s not a big deal
It is important for children to have their own space where they can be themselves. By allowing (允许) children to keep their room as they want, parents are helping children prepare for later life. Also, clearing up your room is a waste of time and there are more important things to focus on, like work and hobbies. Anyway, there is a great chance of getting the room messy again.
No — mess leads to bad feelings
Research shows that in a messy room, you may feel worried and can’t focus on tasks like homework. A tidy room can improve clear thinking and calmness. It also means you have more space for activities and won’t lose things. What’s more, mess might be dangerous — you can fall down or knock something onto the floor and break it.
In my opinion, we can live according to our own willingness if we live alone. However, keeping our space clean and tidy is an important life skill. It is unfair (不公平的) to other family members if our room is messy as it is part of their home too, and we should respect that.

Be Interested in Others
Ask other people about what they love. If they love playing basketball, you can ask “Who’s your favorite player?” or “Which team do you like most?” When you listen and care about their interests, they will feel happy. Maybe they’ll tell you about a great game or a fun team. You can also learn new things from them! It’s good for both of you—you share happiness and ideas!
Wear a Smile Often
A smile is like a magic key. It helps people feel close to each other. When you smile at a new classmate, he or she may smile back. That’s a great way to start a friendship (友谊)! When your friend is sad, your smile can make him or her feel better. Smiles are free but they are very important. They bring joy to everyone around you.
Remember a Person’s Name
People love their names because names make them different. When you meet someone called Lily, try to remember “Lily” instead of (而不是) “the girl with long hair”. Next time you see her, just say, “Hi, Lily!” She will be happy because you remember her name. It shows that you respect her.
Be a Careful Listener First
When others talk to you, look at them and listen. Don’t just think about your own ideas. Ask questions like “What did you do last weekend?” or “Do you like watching films?” Let them talk about their stories and feelings. Everyone loves it when others listen to him or her! If you listen well, people want to be with you more.
These tips are easy to try. Do you want to use them today? Start with a smile, remember a name, and ask someone about their day. You’ll find that making people like you is fun and simple!

Homestays (家庭寄宿) are becoming more and more popular; they are not the same as your own homes. Now, people around the world are giving their homes as hotels. Homestays give people cheap places to stay and good chances (机会) to see the area like local people. They are popular with people who want to study or spend holidays in another country. We ask three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Smith family
Our family home is in a small village in the west of the USA, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The village is very small and quiet. The mountains are very beautiful. You can go for walks and swim in the rivers, but there aren’t any shops, cinemas, or cafes.
Cathy and Julie Clinton
Our two-bed house is near the sea in the south-west of the UK. It’s about a five-minute drive to the nearest village. There are many beaches, rivers and forests and it’s very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading, watching films, and going for walks. Our area is fit for sports. You can surf, fish and go hiking in the mountains. However, the houses here are expensive. You can’t see buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around if you don’t have a car.
Alex and Chloe Martin
Our home is near the centre of Nice, one of the largest cities in France. There are lots of cafes and restaurants here. They won’t close before 2 a.m. We love it here because it’s so friendly and you can find what you need. A number of people come to stay to learn French and Latin here. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is much traffic during the day.

Eco-tourism: Travel with Care for Nature
Eco-tourism is a special kind of travel. It means visiting natural places without hurting the environment. People choose eco-tourism to enjoy beautiful nature and learn about local life. Let’s look at three great eco-tourism spots around the world.
First, there’s the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. Visitors can stay in small wooden cabins deep in the forest. These cabins are built with local materials and use solar energy for electricity. Tourists can walk through the rainforest with guides to see rare birds and monkeys. They can also learn how local people collect fruit and make crafts without cutting down trees. The most popular activity here is watching sunrise over the forest—its beauty is unforgettable.
Second, we have the Blue Coast in New Zealand. This place is famous for its clear blue sea and green hills. Visitors live in eco-friendly tents near the beach. The tents are easy to move, so they don’t damage the grass. Tourists can go kayaking (皮划艇) in the sea to see dolphins and colorful fish. They can also help local farmers plant trees on the hills to protect the soil. Many families love this spot because it’s safe for kids and full of fun outdoor activities.
Third, there’s the Mountain Village in Switzerland. It’s a small village in the Alps with fresh air and snow-capped mountains. Visitors stay in stone houses that have been used for hundreds of years. These houses keep warm in winter without using much energy. Tourists can hike in the mountains in summer or ski in winter. They can also join local families for dinner and try traditional food like cheese and bread. The best part is learning how the villagers protect the mountains by not throwing rubbish and using public transport.
Eco-tourism helps us love nature more. When we travel in an eco-friendly way, we can keep natural places beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

My Cultural Week in Nanjing
Hi! I’m Emma from Toronto, Canada. I’m in Nanjing for a student exchange program, and every day has been full of surprises!
On Monday evening, I walked along the Qinhuai River. Red lanterns lit up the old streets, and the smell of street food filled the air. I tried duck blood vermicelli soup—it was spicy but delicious! My host mom laughed when I drank three glasses of water after one bite!
Tuesday was sunny, so we visited the Nanjing Museum. I saw pottery from 2,000 years ago and learned that Nanjing was once the capital of six dynasties. It made me realize how deep Chinese history is.
Wednesday was rainy, so I stayed indoors. I read a book about Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who helped found the Republic of China and once worked in Nanjing.
On Thursday, the sky cleared. I climbed Zijin Mountain with my host sister. At the top, we saw the whole city bathed in golden light. I took many photos—especially of the sunset that turned the clouds purple. “Zijin” means “purple gold,” she explained.
Today is Friday. I plan to buy Yunjin brocade as gifts. This silk fabric, over 1,600 years old, was once worn only by emperors. I can’t wait to show it to my family back home!

Beijing silk figurines (北京绢人) are made from thin silk, gauze (纱罗) and damask (锦缎) . In 2021, the art of making these dolls was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) .
Jiao Tianqi, 30, is an inheritor (传承人) of Beijing silk figurines. “For many, these silk figurines are just art pieces, but to me, they are like my children,” Jiao said.
Making a silk figurine takes many steps, like designing, painting and making clothes. Artists must make sure the doll’s head and body are the right size. “For a standing doll, the head should be 1/7 of the body. For a sitting doll, the head should be 1/5 of the body,” Jiao said.
Silk figurines are made to look like people from famous stories. The artists want to show what kind of person each character is. When making Wang Xifeng from Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦) , Jiao studied her hairpin (发簪) look from the 1987 TV series to show she is an important person in the Jia family. “For Lin Daiyu, we make her look down shyly. This shows that she feels a little lonely,” Jiao said.
Because making silk figurines takes time and hard work, few carry on the art. To help with this problem, Jiao and her team are using AI technology to make designing easier.

Nature is full of such wonderful landscapes, outdoor fun and cute animals. Why not go outside and get close to nature yourself? Here is some advice for you.
Spending time outdoors can be a great way to enjoy nature and forget all of the real-life problems that are weighing you down. If you are not good at sports, here are some simple ways for you to enjoy the outdoors.
Collecting shells (贝壳) is a way for you to enjoy the outdoors without making yourself tired. If you want to have a nice day at the beach, take a long walk and pick up any shell that interests you. You can even get a shell collecting guidebook or go online and try to check the kind of shells that you found.
Skipping rocks (打水漂) is another fun way to hang out near water. All you need is to pick up some flat stones that are at least the size of a half dollar. Then hold the rock between your fingers, keeping it level with (平行于) the ground. Next, throw the rock toward the water, making it hit the water’s surface so it jumps further away from you. Once you become a master, you can have rock skipping games with your friends.
You can also write a poem about nature. Go outside and find a comfortable place to sit. All you need is a notebook and a pen. Start writing about what you see—even if you’re just looking at a few trees or an open field. You needn’t be a great poet to write something meaningful or show your writing to anyone. Writing poems about nature can be a peaceful and joyful experience.
No matter which way you choose to enjoy nature, when you leave your phone and the Internet behind, you’ll feel the wonder and beauty of the oceans, mountains and forests around you, and better understand how life is meant to be lived.

“All grown-ups were once children but only few of them remember it.” It’s from a famous book The Little Prince. It was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and came out in 1943.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery was born in 1900 in France. He showed an interest in flying when he took his flight in 1912. Then he made a decision to be a pilot one day. Finally, he realized his dream. However, in 1935, his plane crashed (坠落) in the Sahara Desert. After four days, he was saved. Later, he began to write this story out of his experiences.
Both adults and children love this classic book The Little Prince. It is about the adventure of a young prince. He lives on the planet B612 with a rose. But he soon feels tired and leaves his planet to travel. He meets different kinds of people from other planets. During the travel, the young prince discovers that people are all looking for happiness but they are seldom able to get it because of their “business”. On Earth, he finds interesting things such as a snake, other roses and a fox. The fox tells him a secret: Only the heart can find the most important things. This helps the prince realize his love for the rose and he goes back to his planet.

The story’s true meaning is between the lines said by the fox “You become responsible forever for what you have tamed (驯服).” The fox’s messages are unquestionably the book’s most famous ideas because they can tell how to get along with others.
The book has been translated into over 160 languages and has been sold over 50 million copies worldwide. It has been over 80 years since Saint-Exupery introduced his prince to readers, but the magic of The Little Prince lives on.

The Barbie doll is a famous toy in the West because of her long legs and blonde hair. But did you know that over 1,000 years ago in China, there were dolls just as beautiful and popular?
