I was recently on a crowded flight home from Califomia, and holiday travel was busy and chaotic
I counted three different occasions of children having emotional breakdowns-onc at the sccurity
checkpoint and two on the plane.I couldn't help but notice people in line commenting,"Can't that
mom get a handle on her child?""That kid needs some discipline!"...These people seemed to suggest
that these awful holiday travel circumstances should somehow be tackled with grace and ease.
To her credit,,the mother of the toddler(学步儿童)in the security line kept her cool despite the
sweat on her brow and her reddened face.As a mom who was constantly peppered with comments
from well-intentioned friends who thought they were in possession of the recipe for perfect parenthood,
I was all too familiar with her situation.
I might have been one of those judgmental folks before having my own children.Today I'm much
more understanding.Raising children is hard, and every child and family situation is extremely unique.
The reality of our hustle-culture and the lack of resources prohibits many people from being the kind of
parents they would really like to be.Judgment certainly isn't helpful, only causing a feeling of shame.
As is echoed in the article Reimaging Shame,Author Jan Bonhoeffer states."Left unexamined,
shamc can cloud our self-view,leaving us convinced that our worth is conditional. It whispers lies:
'You'll never be good enough.'And when shame continues,it can lead to self abandonment."The role
of motherhood is both complex and challenging,so any attack on a mother will get her loaded with
shame, and shame is disempowering. The last thing women need is more disempowerment.
Whoever coined the phrase,"Everyone you meet is facing an invisible battle.Be kind",was
accurate. The least we can do is suspend our tendency to judge one another, replace it with a mindset of
compassion, and resolve to do a better job empowering the other women in our lives through
intentional action or advocacy.
24.What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A.It's casy to be an armchair critic.
B.Bystanders see most of the game.
C.There is no life without discipline.
D.Criticism is a cornerstone to growth.
25.How does the author find her friends'comments?
A.Constructive.
B,Informative.
C.Unworkable.
D.Misleading.
26.What does Jan Bonhoeffer stress in the article?
A.The core concept of shame.
B.The potential impact of shame.
C.The true worth of self-views.
D.The complex role of motherhood.
27.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A.Being non-judgmental toward mothers.
B.Maintaining a positive mindset at work.
C.Empowering moms with multiple skills.
D.Acting swiftly to resolve hidden conflicts.

No matter how much better than us computers are in fields such as calculating and analyzing,we
humans still have a few skills that are exclusive to us-keeping secrets, for example But don't feeltoo

The Google Brain team has been working on computing systems called"neural networks"-

Each of the networks had its own job.Alice sent messages to Bob,Eve tried to "eavesdrop"()
and find out the messages, and Alice and Bob had to figure out a way to hide the messages from Eve.All
the help that Alice and Bob got from the researchers before the mission began was made up of a set of
numbers called a key, which Eve didn't have access to.
At first,Alice was not very good at sending secret messages. But slowly it worked on a way to
encrypt them-putting information into a special code so that others could not understand it even if they
got the information-using the numbers given by researchers. The important part here is that Alice had
to come up with her own encryption algorithm, but ncither Bob nor Eve was given that information.Bob
didn't have any idea how the key should be applied to the encrypted message, and Eve was basically
working completely from nothing. And after practice,Bob also came to be able to decrypt (Alice's
messages.Without the numbers or keys,Eve failed to understand Alice's"spcech"most of the time.
This test is considered a big step in the development of computers'learning skills."Computing with
neural networks on this scale has only become possible in the last few years,so we really are at the
beginning of what's possible,"Joe Sturonas of US encryption company PKWARE told New Scientist
magazine.
Unfortunately, the test happened only one week after UK physicist Stephen Hawking, while
speaking at Cambridge University, wamned how artificial intelligence could develop a will of its own.
This could be"either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity",he said.
But just as Sturonas pointed out,no matter what the possibilities of computers are in the future, they
are just starting out.We still have plenty of time to work out a solution before they get anywhere near
becoming a threat to humanity.
28.The Google Brain team did the test to find out
A.how"neural networks"encrypt and decrypt
B.how"neural networks"communicate with each other
C.if"neural networks"could develop a will of their own
D.if"neural networks"could keep their communication private
29.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the test?
A.Alice was responsible for sending messages because she was good at encryption.
B.Alice and Bob leamed to encrypt and decode with the help of researchers.
C.Eve often found it hard to make sense of the messages Alice sent to Bob.
D.The three neural networks worked together on the numbers given by researchers.
30.What can we conclude from the article?
A.Artificial intelligence is not great at blind decryption,at least for now.
B.Stephen Hawking is strongly against the development of artificial intelligence.
C.The more advanced artificial intelligence is,the'more we can benefit from it
D.Artificial intelligence is now able to decode encrypted text without any guidance.
31.What is the author's attitude towards artificial intelligence?
A.neutral
B.positive
C.negative
D.indifferent

Nearly 2 million years ago,one of our ancestors developed bone cancer in their foot. The fate of
this individual is unknown, but the fossilized remains leave no doubt that cancer has been a part of our
story for a very long time. But these cancer cells weren't the only interal threat our ancestors faced.
Their survival was also threatened by individuals attempting to weaken the group. At the heart of the

story is this question:is human nature selfish or altruistic, competitive or cooperative? The answer has
profound implications for how we aim to structure socicty. If we are born altruists, then institutions are
unnecessary. But if selfishness dominates, strong control is essential.
In the language of evolutionary biology,we have a cooperation dilemma:there are situations
where it is in our interest to work with others, and there are situations where it is not.As a result,
visible rivalry (was replaced by what I call "invisible rivalry"-the ability to hide selfish,
competitive intentions while maintaining the appearance of a cooperative nature. In other words,we
evolved to compete in a cooperative world.
This is where the analogy()with cancer arises.Humanity's long history of living with the
disease means we have evolved biological mechanisms to reduce the risk it poses. Many reactions at
the cellular level evolved to help our bodies fight off cancers. It is this strong immunc system that
explains why, although we are frequently exposed to viruses, these often don't lead to illness.Similarly
the threats to our social groups posed by the evolution of invisible rivalry led us to develop practices
and institutions to maximize cooperation.I call this our cultural immune system.
However, just as cancers find ways to escape from our immune systems, some individuals use
their intelligence to destabilize the group's social norms for their own benefit To fight the enemy,we
can boost the cultural immune system, much like how we can improve our biological immune systems
through healthy lifestyles and vaccination.
But this isn't going to happen until we first recognize the problem that invisible rivalry poses. In
my view, the best way is through education. We are all part of the cultural immune system. If we
understand our evolutionary heritage,we will be open-eyed to the danger that freeloaders pose to
society and place our trust more clear-sightedly-much as the body's defence system leams to
recognize the agents associated with cancers to deal with them.
We must work together to stay one step ahead of humanity's opportunistic nature.Without
beliefs, norms and a proper understanding of human nature,we are at the mercy of our selfish
biological heritage.Evolution has made us this way but we can learn to overcome it.
32.What does the underlined word"altruistic"in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Far-sighted.
B.Generous.
C.Self-interested.
D.Adaptable
33.What can be inferred about the cultural immune system?
A.It contributes to humanity's competitiveness.
B.Human dishonesty is said to be its byproduct.
C.Internal threats in society cannot escape from it.
D.It can be improved through enhancing cooperation.
34.What can we leamn from this passage?
A.The minority's selfishness doesn't mean cancers for society.
B.It is hard to maintain the appearance of a cooperative nature.
C.We need agree on the fact that invisible rivalry brings harm.
D.The stability of society lies in humanity's opportunistic nature.
35.Which would be the best title for this passage?.
A.The Cure for Social Ills
B.The Mercy of Humanity
C.The Value in Institutions
D.The Root of Invisible Rivalry

On the Spot:When the Spotlight Breaks Trust
Most of us have been put on the spot in a number of different situations, whether at work or
among a group of friends.36However,you just aren't ready to give, whether it's because you
don't know or you're not willing to share. It is really embarrassing.
We are no stranger to putting others on the spot ourselves, usually by accident.Perhaps we ask a
sensitive question of a friend in a group setting,or try to push a quiet coworker to share their answers
in a mceting.37
Putting somconc on the spot, though, whcther intentional or not,has the effect of destroying trust
in a relationship. The key to maintaining the trust in a relationship is developing your emotional
intelligence.38 As Krauss wrote in a recent Psychology Today article,"A sign that you're not as
sensitive as you could be when you pressure people is that others try to stay away from you to the
extent that they can.”
39 Are people bom with the ability to develop a high level of emotional intelligence,or is
that something they are taught?Although the answer is probably a little bit of both, strengthening our
cmotional intelligence is definitely something we can all do.40 Many of us have developed
them with time to strengthen our emotional intelligence, whether with the help of a professional or
through our own trial-and-error.
A.People are fed up with the dull and long meetings.
B.It can help us understand and handle a confusing situation.
C.A core part of that is being able to perceive how others feel.
D.Sets of eyes tumn toward you with the expectations for an answer.
E.There is a debate on whether emotional intelligence is native or not.
F.Listening, empathizing, and reflecting are strategies often acquired later in life.
G.We may even unknowingly touch a nerve with a family member at a casual gathering.

Awe is the"Wowl"emotion we get when something is so vast that it stops us in our tracks.
Often,it 41 or expands our thinking.Awe experiences increase positive emotions and overall
satisfaction in life.It can also help our relationships, making us feel more caring and less 42
more supported by and morc likcly to help others.
Most of us associate awe with something43 and beautiful:the Northern Lights in nature,
Beethoven's symphonies (or a spiritual experience. But people can trigger awe, too. And not
just people we think of as public 44-emergency workers or front-line workers,or famous
people, such as athletes or astronauts. We can be awed by our nearest and dearest-the people sitting
next to us on the couch, chatting on the other end of the phone.Psychologists call this interpersonal
awe.
Often,this interpersonal awe is a(n)45 to life's big,sweeping changes:witnessing a
baby's first steps, watching someone take care of a sick loved one, seeing parents cope 46 with
the challenges of aging.
But interpersonal awe happens in smaller moments, too.John Bargh,66,a psychologist and
professor who lives in Guilford,Conn.,said he was"truly 47"by his then-5-year-old daughter
while dining with her in a MeDonald's several years ago. When she heard another child crying across
the restaurant, she grabbed the toy from her Happy Meal, walked over to the boy and handed it to him.

We can't make someone else_48 in a way that's awesomne. But we can prepare ourselves
to notice it when they do.Here is how.
Start by questioning your 49 about people in your life.Do you believe your partner is
insensitive or your sibling is selfish? There may be a little50 to that, but it's never the whole
tale."The story you tell yourself51 catching people at their best,"says Marianna Graziosi,an
assistant instructor of positive psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.
To increase your chances of feeling awed by the other person,Ms.Graziosi suggests you ask
yoursclf what's going on in his or her life. Can you come up with52 of how that person is doing
something positive?
Name awe when you see it.("Wow,that was awesome!")This will help you 53 it and
remember the experience.Enjoy it in the moment.Tell others about it;this will 54 your positive
emotions and help others feel good,as well, says Johns Hopkins'Dr.Yaden.
Thank the person who awed you. This makes the other person feel good. And it will help you,
too:Studies show that people who 55 gratitude have higher levels of happiness and psychological
well-being than those who don't.

Baron and Leo stood side by side, gazing carefully at the telescope showcased in the science store's
display."One day,"Baron said,his hand resting warmly on his younger brother's shoulder,"we'll use
one just like this to find a comet (together.".That conversation had taken place three months ago.
Now.Baron's own telescope stood proudly in his room-a sophisticated instrument of black metal and
silver accents, paid for with every bit of his summer eamings.
Remember,,it's not a toy,”Baron reminded Leo that day.“The lensest(镜片)are fragile.”Lco
nodded earnestly, though his fingers were secretly crossed behind his back. The moment Baron's
skateboard wheels faded down the street,Leo carefully carried the heavy telescope outside.
Pointing the telescope skyward felt like unlocking a magic door.A small group of neighborhood
children gathered,their gasps of"Awesome!"filling him with a surge of pride.Bold enough,he
attempted Baron's favorite maneuver:tracking a fast-moving satellite.
"Steady now,"he murmured to himself,making a slight adjustment.For a glorious moment,a
fast-moving object filled the eye glass-then the image suddenly twisted out of shape with a faint
grinding sound from inside the tube."Oh no!"Leo shouted, instinctively turning the focus button too
hard. The telescope shook violently on its three-leg stand, tipped over, and hit the ground with a
sickening heavy sound. When he lifted it,his heart sank:the primary lens was damaged by a web of tiny
cracks.
Twilight was deepening as Leo carried the wounded instrument back inside, hiding the damaged
lens under his sweater.Scare settled in his stomach like cold stone at the thought of facing Baron.
"Maybe I can find a replacement lens online before he notices,"he thought desperately. But the web-like
cracks seemed to accuse him silently.
That night,Leo lay in the dark, the secret weighing heavily on him.
“"We have to buy parts to fix it,”said Baron.
