Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you’ve visited or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping calling habits.
In fact, it’s likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen.
Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, and that it’s important to reveal yourself partly to friends, family and lovers at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to know who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.
The key question is: Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.
When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. 60 percent of respondents say they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me”.
But people say one thing and do another. Only a small number of Americans change any behavior in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. Privacy economist Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will give up personal information like social security numbers just to get their hands on a 50-cents-off coupon. But privacy does matter — at least sometimes. It’s ilke health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.
31. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?
A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.
B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.
C. There should be a distance even between friends.
D. There should be fewer arguments between friends.
C “Friends should keep a certain distance”(朋友之间应保持一定距离)符合文意
32. Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?
A. Modern society has finally developed into an open society.
B. People leave traces around when using modern technology.
C. There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.
D. Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.
【答案】B
【解析】文中提到:“digital bread crumbs you leave everywhere make it easy... to find out who you are”(你到处留下的“数字面包屑”让人们很容易查出你是谁)。
33. According to the passage, privacy is like health in that ________.
A. people will make every effort to keep it B. its importance is hardly understood
C. It is something that can easily be lost D. people don’t value it until they lose it
【答案】D
【解析】文章第二段提到:“Privacy is like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.”(隐私就像健康:拥有时不觉得,失去了才后悔没保护好)。 D “People tend to value privacy only after losing it” 符合文意。
34. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Valuing Your Health B. Treasuring Your Privacy
C. Boundaries between Friends D. The Information Age
35.What is the author's attitude towards the development of technology in relation to privacy?
A. Supportive.B. Objective.C. Doubtful.D. Indifferent.
C
The wheel is one of the most important ancient inventions. The earliest wheels were simple wooden discs with a hole in the center. They were first used around 3500 BC in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.
The wheel revolutionized transport and trade. It allowed people and goods to be transported over land more easily. Wheeled carts and chariots moved faster than humans carrying loads. Wheels also made pottery making more efficient. The potter's wheel, a device used to shape round pots, was invented around the same time.
The wheel spread from the Middle East to Europe and Asia. The Indus Valley civilization in modern Pakistan had wheeled vehicles by 2600 BC. Wheeled chariots helped transform warfare in ancient China after 1200 BC and reached ancient Britain by 1800 BC. The wheel has shaped civilization and defined progress.
36.According to the text, why did the invention of the wheel change warfare?
A. It made weapons more powerful.
B. It allowed armies to move faster and carry heavier loads.
C. It helped soldiers build stronger walls.
D. It was used to create better armor.
Armies could move faster and carry heavier loads.”(轮子改变了战争。
B项 “It allowed armies to move faster and carry heavier loads” 与原文完全一致,故选B。
37. How did the wheel influence pottery making?
A. It increased production speed.
B. It improved pottery quality.
C. It reduced pottery weight.
D. It standardized pottery shape.
【答案】A
【解析】根据文章第一段:“The invention of the wheel... made pottery making more efficient.”(轮子的发明…… A “To increase the speed of production” 符合原文。
38. Pakistan had wheeled vehicles by_____.
A.2600 BC. B.2600 AD. C.1800 BC. D.1600BC
【答案】A
根据文章第二段:“The Indus Valley civilization in modern Pakistan had wheeled vehicles by 2600 BC.”(现代巴基斯坦的印度河流域文明在公元前2600年就有了轮式车辆)。选项A “In modern Pakistan” 与原文地点一致。
39. What was the earliest simple wheel made of?
A. Iron. B. Wood. C.Stone. D. Copper.

D “All of the above”(以上所有)概括最全面。

填 What's (即 What is 的缩写),意为“你的(计划)是什么?”。
或 "That sounds great!"(听起来很棒!)
43. 词汇搭配:询问票价通常用 "the price of the ticket"。
44. 后半句 "You don't need to buy tickets"(你不需要买票)是解题的关键线索。
45. 口语中常用的告别语是 "See you then"(到时候见)或 "See you later"。

46. Being 47. broken 48. time 49. To 50. well 51. with 52. vegetables 53. finally 54. succeeded 55. when
Being。
It is time to do sth.(是做某事的时候了/该做某事了)。
51. 动词 provide 有两个常用搭配:provide sb. with sth.(提供某人某物)provide sth. for sb.(为某人提供某物)原文结构是 provided the poor families (sb.)
Finally。
搭配:succeed in doing sth.

32. Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?
A. Modern society has finally developed into an open society.
B. People leave traces around when using modern technology.
C. There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.
D. Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.
33. According to the passage, privacy is like health in that ________.
A. people will make every effort to keep it B. its importance is hardly understood
C. It is something that can easily be lost D. people don’t value it until they lose it
34. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Valuing Your Health B. Treasuring Your Privacy
C. Boundaries between Friends D. The Information Age
