The freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter,
so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota,Florida,my bags were packed
before you could say "sunshine".I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C
C),thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies
4
and warm air,I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness.Swimming pools, wine tasting,
and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon)filled the weekend,
but the best part, particularly to my taste, dulled by months.of cold-weather root
vegetables,was a 7 a.m.adventure to the Sarasota farmers'market that proved to be
more than worth the early wake-up call.
The market, which was founded in 1979,sets up its tents every Saturday from
7:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m,rain or shine,along North Lemon and State streets.Baskets of
perfect red strawberries, the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck and
most of all,the tomatoes:amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.
Disappointed by many a broken,.vine--ripened(蔓上成熟的)promise,.I've
refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the
store,once I get them home they're unfailingly dry,hard,and tasteless.But I homed
in,with uncertainty,on one particular itable at the Brown's Grove Farm's stand,full
of fresh and soft tomatoes the.size of my fist. These were the real deal and at that
moment,I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating
things that back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months.
Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight,my happiness deepened when I
learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty,a newly
opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where luckily for me I was planning
to have dinner that very night.Without even seeing the menu,I knew I'd be ordering
every tomato on it.

Coral reefs(珊瑚礁)are a unique ocean ecosystem consisting of rocky
structures mainly formed by corals and some other ocean life.Despite only covering
0.2 percent of the ocean floor, coral reefs support at least 25 percent of marine
species,as well as providing food and economic security for hundreds of millions of
people.
However, coral reefs across the world are under threat.Warmer oceans .can
cause the coral bleaching(白化).It happens when the corals lose colored algae(海藻)
living in their bodies and turn completely white.Without the algae, the corals lose
their main food source and can die.In addition,as oceans become more acidic(
from absorbing CO2,corals in acidic conditions become weak in forming reefs.
In 2021,the United Nations reported a 14.percent loss of corals across the world
largely from rising sea temperatures since 2009.Australia declared mass bleaching
events in 2022 across large parts of the Great Barrier Reef, four times since 2016.
Data from the Philippines showed higher than usual ocean temperatures between
2015 and 2017 had caused serious three-year bleaching events in reefs across the
planet.
Scientists have been cooperating tonsee how coral reefs can be protected.
Thankfully, they find those coral reefs in the hot parts of the globe are the least
affected. They contain corals with better heat resistance. So their research focuses on
finding genes for heat tolerance so that they.can be passed on to future generations.
Biologists also mix corals that are more resilient to higher temperatures with those
that are not and the resulting generation has a better chance of survival.
Ultimately, scientists add that without a serious reduction in greenhouse gases,
99 percent of the world's coral reefs will be gone by the end of the century. There is
a limit to how quickly corals can adapt to.warm climate;so if temperatures rise
rapidly,then extinction is certain.
28.Which is the main threat to coral reefs?
A.Declining ocean acidification.
B.Increasing sea temperatures.
C.Loss of colored algae.
D.Lack of food sources
29.What do we know from paragraph 3?
A.No actions are taken to protect coral reefs
B.Coral bleaching is the worst in Australia
C.Coral reefs have grown rapidly for years.
6
D.Coral reefs receive impacts globally.
30.What can be the basic way to protect coral reefs?
A.Limiting their spread.
B:Lowering the release of greenhouse gases.
C.Relying on genetic science.
D.Transplanting them to the hot parts.

Humans are not the animal kingdom's only fashionistas.Tits can be
fashion followers;too,apparently:A latest study showsithat,given the chance,they
decorate their nests with this season's'must-have colour.
1
Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin were following up on a studyl published in 1934 by
Henry Smith Williams,an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various
coloured balls of yarn()out in his garden, almost alwaysbone and only one
became popular that season for being included into local birds'nests. But which
particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the
colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
William's work was,however,forgotten until theycame across.it while
following up on a different study;published by a team at the University of Toulouse,
suggesting fashion-following,too.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin therefore set out to re-run
Williams's experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
:16r]
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in
a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to
them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute's researchers to keep
track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival ati food containers
throughout the wood.Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of
different colors.Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue /tits
included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nest builder.
【
Tits, then,do seem to be "on trend",when it comes to nest-building materials.
Why that should happen remains obscure.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin suspect the
fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favors younger ones copying their
elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit.
7
Williams's original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random -a
bit like those of the leaders of human fashions
32.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin contributed to William's work.
B.The yam was the most popular material to decorate local birds'nests.
O.Early birds'color preference was copied by their fellows.
D.The color of the yam favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.
33.How did Dr.Wild and Dr.Aplin improve William's experiment?
A.They adopted the data-collecting method.
「
B.They studied the habits of blue tits.
C.They observed the blue tits.m
D.They fitted tracking devices to food containers.

34.What does the underlined word "obscure"in Paragraph 5 mean?
ni
A.Complicated.B.Evident.C:Hidden.
D.Shallow.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Birds favor certain colors in decoration.)
B.Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.
