Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
Activity: Show the unit opening picture. Ask the guiding questions: "Where are the people? What are they doing?"
Students observe the picture and answer in simple English (e.g., "They are cleaning windows on a tall building. They are wearing safety ropes.").
Introduce the unit topic: "Unit 4 Workplace Safety. Today we will learn about common safety signs in the workplace and discuss their importance."
To activate students’ visual perception, arouse interest in the safety theme and lead in the lesson naturally.
Step 2 Vocabulary & Listening Matching (15 mins)
Activity 1: Present the six safety sign expressions with corresponding textbook pictures: Hearing Protection, Fire Alarm, Emergency Exit, Danger: Falling Objects, No Smoking, Caution: Slippery Surface.
Teacher reads each expression aloud, explains the meaning and typical application scenarios (e.g., No Smoking: in factories or gas stations; Emergency Exit: in buildings for escape), and students repeat.
Activity 2: Students practice reading the expressions in pairs, and the teacher checks pronunciation, correcting common mistakes (e.g., "slippery" /ˈslɪpəri/, "emergency" /iˈmɜːdʒənsi/).
Activity 3: Play the audio for Warming up 1. Students listen and match the expressions with the pictures.
Play the audio again. Students check answers and explain the matching logic (e.g., the green running man picture matches Emergency Exit; the ear picture matches Hearing Protection).
To combine vocabulary learning with listening practice, helping students associate expressions with visual information and lay a vocabulary foundation.
Step 3 Group Discussion (15 mins)
Activity 1: Present the three discussion questions:
1. Where can you see the above safety signs?
2. What might happen if you ignore these safety signs?
3. What other safety signs have you ever seen?
Students work in groups of 4. Teacher provides sentence frames: "I can see the ____ sign in ____.", "If I ignore the sign, I might ____.", "I have also seen the ____ sign."
Activity 2: Invite 23 groups to share their opinions. Teacher comments and supplements common safety signs (e.g., No Entry, High Voltage) and consequences (e.g., fire, injury).
To train students’ oral expression ability, let them apply new words to real life, and deepen understanding of safety sign importance.
Step 4 Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary: Review the six safety sign expressions and key discussion points.
Homework:
1. Copy the six expressions 3 times with their Chinese meanings.
2. Draw a safety sign you know and write its English expression below.
To consolidate classroom knowledge and extend learning to creative practice.
