Step 1 Lead-in & Revision (5 mins)
Activity: Ask students to retell the procedures for operating a miller from the passage in Period 4.
Introduce the lesson tasks: "Today we will complete the workflow chart, do extended activities about lathe operation, learn about orderly production, and review the whole unit."
To review prior knowledge and connect the previous lesson with new tasks.
Step 2 Reading & Writing Tasks (10 mins)
Activity 1: Complete the workflow chart. Students use the information from the passage "The Procedures for My Job" to fill in the blanks in the workflow chart. The teacher guides them to refer to the sequential steps they extracted in Period 4.
Activity 2: Judge workplace behaviors. Students read the three scenarios (Emma, Helen, George) and decide whether they follow correct procedures. They mark with a happy face for correct behaviors and a sad face for incorrect ones. The teacher discusses each scenario with the class and explains the reasons (e.g., Emma’s behavior is incorrect because she doesn’t check if the workpieces fit well before machining; George’s behavior is incorrect because he cleans the machine with the power on).
To help students apply the knowledge from the reading passage to practical tasks and deepen their understanding of correct workplace procedures.
Step 3 Extended Activities (10 mins)
Activity 1: Circle key information. Students read the "How to Use a Lathe" instructions and circle the key points (e.g., read the instructions, check parts, operate according to procedures, turn off the machine after use).
Activity 2: Put procedures in order. Students arrange the lathe operation steps (A. Read the instructions; D. Make sure all parts are in good condition; B. Press the button to start the machine; C. Turn off the machine after work) in the correct order.
Activity 3: Identify mistakes. Students read the scenarios about Eric, Lucy and Mark’s lathe operation behaviors and identify their mistakes (e.g., Eric bangs the lathe when it doesn’t work; Lucy ignores unusual noise; Mark leaves the lathe on when away).
Activity 4: Write safety notes. Students work in pairs to complete the safety notes about machine operation based on the instructions and scenarios. They add more safety rules they know.
To help students apply the knowledge of machine operation procedures to practical tasks and develop safety awareness.
Step 4 Culture Corner (5 mins)
Activity: Students read the Culture Corner passage "Order is Efficiency". They read the passage quickly and answer the two questions:
1. Do you agree that order is efficiency? Why or why not?
2. Why does the writer say that orderly production can reduce economic losses?
The teacher explains the main ideas of the passage: orderly workshop management, standardized procedures, and proper placement of tools improve efficiency and reduce accidents and losses. Students discuss their opinions on the importance of order in production.
To expand students’ understanding of the importance of order in the workplace and develop a sense of professional rigor.
Step 5 My Progress Check & Unit Summary (5 mins)
Activity: Students complete the My Progress Check section, ticking the words, expressions and skills they have mastered in the unit.
The teacher leads students to summarize the whole unit, including key vocabulary (procedure words, machine operation terms), key skills (describing procedures, following procedures, completing workflows), and the importance of safety and order in work.
Homework:
1. Review all the knowledge learned in Unit 3.
2. Write a short paragraph describing a procedure for using a common machine or tool you know, including safety rules.
To help students consolidate the knowledge of the whole unit and extend the learning to practical writing.
