Step 1 Lead-in & Prediction (5 mins)
Activity: Ask students: "What safety checks do you think are important in a workplace?"
Present key words from the text. Students guess the speech topic (e.g., "safety meeting about workplace risks").
To arouse reading interest and activate prior safety knowledge.
Step 2 Vocabulary Learning (10 mins)
Activity 1: Present key words and expressions with explanations and examples:
fire extinguisher: device for putting out fires; e.g., "The fire extinguisher hasn’t been refilled."
refill: fill again; e.g., "Refill the fire extinguisher regularly."
in case of: if something happens; e.g., "We need fire extinguishers in case of fire."
switch: device for controlling electricity; e.g., "A broken switch can cause electric shock."

Students read words in turns and do simple matching (word to meaning).
To master vocabulary, reduce reading difficulty and help understand the speech.
Step 3 Reading & Comprehension (15 mins)
Activity 1: Fast reading. Students read quickly and answer: "What is the main idea of the speech?"
Activity 2: Detailed reading. Students answer the two textbook questions:
1. How many risks has Mr Brown mentioned?
2. According to Mr Brown, what should be replaced to avoid an electric shock?
Activity 3: Students work in groups to list the three risks and solutions:
1. Unrefilled fire extinguisher → Refill it right now.
2. Broken switch → Replace it immediately.
3. Long hair when operating machines → Tie it back or cut it short.
The teacher explains the speech sentence by sentence, emphasizing the importance of addressing each risk.
To train reading skills (skimming and scanning) and help students understand safety risks and solutions.
Step 4 Summary & Homework (5 mins)
