Step 1 Lead-in & Prediction (5 mins)
Activity: Review safety signs from Period 1 with a quick quiz.
Ask students to read the expressions and guess what the dialogue is about (e.g., "safety rules for new construction workers").
Introduce the dialogue background: David is a new construction worker, and Paul is his supervisor.
To review old knowledge, train prediction ability and prepare for listening.
Step 2 Key Vocabulary Learning (10 mins)
Activity 1: Present expressions with explanations and examples:
make sure: to ensure something happens; e.g., "Make sure you work safely."
helmet: hard hat for head protection; e.g., "Wear a helmet on the construction site."
protect… from: keep safe from harm; e.g., "PPE protects you from hazards."
PPE (personal protective equipment): safety gear like boots, vest, gloves.
hazard: danger; e.g., "Construction sites have many hazards."
lead to: cause; e.g., "A small mistake can lead to a serious accident."
Students practice reading in pairs and correct pronunciation (e.g., "hazard" /ˈhæzəd/, "accident" /ˈæksɪdənt/).
To master vocabulary, reduce listening difficulty and provide language support for speaking.
Step 3 Listening & Comprehension (15 mins)
Activity 1: Play the dialogue audio once. Students check their predictions.
Activity 2: Play again. Students answer key questions:
1. What does Paul remind David to do first before entering the site?
2. What does PPE include?
3. What should David check about the tools before use?
Activity 3: Explain key sentences and the note about PPE. Students read the dialogue aloud to practice intonation.
To develop listening skills, extract detailed information and understand construction site safety rules.
Step 4 Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary: Review key expressions and the main safety rules from the dialogue.
Homework:
1. Copy the key expressions and make 1 sentence for each.
2. Listen to the dialogue 3 times and retell the safety rules David learned.
To consolidate dialogue content and improve listening and retelling ability.
