Unit 3
Period 3 Listening & Speaking 2
Teaching Analysis
【Teaching Content】
Listening & Speaking Section 3-4: paragraph completion with procedure expressions and listening to number CNC operation procedures
【Teaching Focus & Difficulties】
Teaching Key Points
Correctly completing the paragraph with the procedure expressions based on context.
Understanding and numbering the CNC operation procedures in the correct order.
Teaching Difficulties
Using the sequential context (first, next, then, lastly) to choose the correct expressions for the paragraph completion.
Distinguishing the order of CNC operation steps in the listening material.
【Teaching Aids】
Multimedia courseware, audio recordings, paragraph completion worksheets, CNC operation pictures
Learning Objectives
【Knowledge & Skills】
Students can master the expressions for the paragraph completion: solder the components, the worktable, electronic components, start our work, test and adjust.
Students can understand the four steps of CNC operation procedures: turn the power on, input the program, verify the program and preset the tools, do the machining.
【Ability Objectives】
Students can complete the paragraph about electronic assembly procedures with the given expressions and check their answers via listening.
Students can listen to the CNC operation audio and number the procedures in the correct order.
【Affect, Attitude & Values】
Students can develop confidence in using English to describe work procedures and understand the importance of order in technical operations.

Step 1 Lead-in & Revision (5 mins)
Activity: Ask students to retell the electronic assembly procedure from the speech in Period 2, using the sequential words (first, next, then, lastly).
Introduce the lesson tasks: "Today we will complete a paragraph about the assembly procedure and learn about CNC operation procedures through listening."
To review prior knowledge and connect the previous lesson with new tasks.
Step 2 Dialogue Completion (10 mins)
Activity 1: Present the paragraph completion task with the five options: A. solder the components, B. the worktable, C. electronic components, D. start our work, E. test and adjust.
Students read the paragraph independently and fill in the blanks based on the context and their knowledge from the previous lesson. The teacher guides students to analyze the context clues (e.g., "After we get the tools ready, we will..." matches "start our work"; "First, get the required..." matches "electronic components").
Activity 2: Play the audio for the paragraph. Students listen and check their answers.
Students practice reading the completed paragraph in pairs, focusing on the sequential flow of the procedure.
To consolidate the vocabulary and sequential expressions related to work procedures and improve students’ reading and oral fluency.
Step 3 Listening to CNC Operation Procedures (10 mins)
Activity 1: Present the four CNC operation steps with pictures and text: turn the power on, input the program according to the required design, verify the program and preset the tools, do the machining. The teacher briefly explains the meaning of each step.
Activity 2: Play the audio once. Students listen carefully and number the procedures in the correct order.
Play the audio again. Students check their answers and correct any mistakes. The teacher clarifies the correct order: 1. Turn the power on; 2. Input the program according to the required design; 3. Verify the program and preset the tools; 4. Do the machining.
To develop students’ listening comprehension of technical procedures and help them understand the order of CNC operations.
Step 4 Speaking Practice (10 mins)
Activity: Pair work. Students choose a simple daily or school procedure (e.g., making coffee, using a printer) and describe it using sequential words (first, next, then, lastly). They can use the sentence frames: "To..., first you need to..., next you..., then you..., lastly you..."
Invite 23 pairs to present their descriptions in front of the class. The teacher comments on the clarity and order of their descriptions.
To help students apply the sequential expressions learned in the lesson to reallife contexts and improve their oral communication skills.
Step 5 Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary: The teacher leads students to review the completed paragraph and the correct order of CNC operation procedures.
Homework:
1. Complete the exercises on the textbook and review the sequential expressions for describing procedures.
2. Write a short paragraph describing a procedure you are familiar with, using first, next, then, lastly.
To consolidate the knowledge learned in class and extend the learning to written expression.
