Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
Activity: Show the unit opening picture and ask the guiding questions: "Where are the people? What are they doing?"
Students observe the picture and answer the questions with simple English.
Introduce the unit topic: "Today we will learn Unit 1 First Day at Work. First, let’s learn some words about different jobs."
To activate students’ prior knowledge, arouse their interest in the unit topic and lead in the lesson naturally.
Step 2 Vocabulary & Listening Matching (15 mins)
Activity 1: Present the 6 occupation words with pictures: construction worker, electrician, IT engineer, mechanic, railway worker, chemical worker.
Teacher reads each word aloud, and students follow; explain the meaning and related pictures.
Activity 2: Students practice reading the words in pairs, and the teacher checks pronunciation, correcting common mistakes (e.g., the pronunciation of "construction" /kənˈstrʌkʃn/).
Activity 3: Matching game: Students match the words with their corresponding pictures on the textbook.
To help students master the form, sound and meaning of the new words, laying a foundation for the following listening and discussion tasks.
Step 3 Listening Task (10 mins)
Activity: Play the audio for Warming up Activity 1 once. Students listen and match the words with the pictures.
Play the audio again; students check their answers and correct mistakes.
Check answers with the whole class and explain the matching logic (e.g., the picture of a worker on the construction site matches "construction worker").
To develop students’ listening ability, consolidate the vocabulary and complete the textbook task.
Step 4 Discussion (10 mins)
Activity 1: Present the three discussion questions:
1. Do you know anyone who does one of the above jobs?
2. How do these jobs benefit your daily life?
3. What usually happens on a person’s first day at work?
Students work in groups of 4 to discuss the questions; the teacher walks around to offer guidance, providing sentence frames such as "I know a mechanic. He fixes cars for people." and "Construction workers build houses for us."
Activity 2: Invite 23 groups to share their opinions in front of the class.
To help students use the new vocabulary to express their ideas, improve their oral English and develop their communication skills.
Step 5 Summary and Homework (5 mins)
Summary: The teacher leads students to review the 6 occupation words and the discussion sentences learned in this lesson.
Homework:
1. Copy the 6 words 3 times with their Chinese meanings.
2. Write 12 simple sentences about a job you know.
To consolidate the knowledge learned in class and extend learning to afterclass time.
