Passage 1
文章内容:谈论周围的人
“Dad,” I say one day, “Let’s take a trip. Why don’t you fly and meet me?”
My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thought and his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.
My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.
He agrees to travel with me through the national parks, We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.
“What is our first stop?” asks my father.
“What time is it?”
“Still don’t have a watch?”
Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite (花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.
“Unbelievable.” he says. “How was this done?”
A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.
We stare up and I ask myself, “Would I ever devote my life to anything?” “No directions, no goals.” I always used to hear those words in my father’s voice. Now I hear them in my own.
The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.
“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.
“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”
The last sentence—it’s probably the same thing I’d say about my father. And what I’d want my child to say about me.
In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I’ve never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling, I realize and maybe a regular job won’t be as dull as I feared.
Weeks after our trip, I call my father. “The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.” I tell him I’ve decided to settle down, and I’m wearing a watch.

Long ago in ancient China, there was a wise judge (法官) named Judge Li who was famous for his cleverness. One day, a farmer named Wang came to his court (法庭), crying, “Your Honor, my best horse is gone! I saw it in my neighbor Zhang’s horse barn (马棚). I know it’s mine because it has a white spot (斑点) on its forehead. But Zhang refuses to return it!”
Judge Li called Zhang, who argued, “This horse has been mine for years. Wang is lying!” The villagers disagreed—some believed Wang, while others trusted Zhang.
To solve the problem, Judge Li ordered the horse to be brought to the courtroom. He covered its head with a cloth and asked both men, “Describe the horse’s eyes in detail.”
Wang said at once, “Its left eye is slightly cloudy because it was hurt last year.” Zhang stopped, then guessed, “Its eyes are big and black, like all healthy horses!”
Judge Li removed the cloth, showing the horse’s cloudy left eye. Zhang’s face turned white. The judge said, “A true owner knows everything of his animal. The horse is Wang’s.”
But the story didn’t end there. A week later, the horse ran away into the mountains. Wang’s son ran after it but broke his leg. The villagers sighed, “What bad luck!” Wang, however, calmly said, “Who knows if this is truly bad luck?”
Soon after, a war broke out, and all young men were called to serve in the army—except Wang’s son, who didn’t have to go because of his injury (受伤). The villagers then understood: what seems like bad luck may turn into something good.

2. What does the underlined word “removed” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Covered with. B. Took off. C. Burnt up. D. Light up.

C. By checking the government materials. D. By letting the horse freely choose its owner.
4. Why was Wang not worried about his son’s injury?
A. Because he didn’t truly love his own son.
B. Because he wanted to encourage his son to be strong.
C. Because he believed bad luck could bring good.
D. Because he didn’t care what the villagers thought.
5. What is the main lesson of this story?
A. Always trust the judge’s final decision. B. Good and bad luck often come together.
C. Never disagree with your neighbors. D. Horses are very important animals.

What would you do if your best friend and you have different ideas with each other? Karina is my best friend. When we first met in a camp, we quickly became friends. And we would be friends forever. So it was hard to imagine that I would argue with her on some things. Whatever we did, we were always together.
But then something happened in another summer camp. “Did you hear about the shopping mall news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down some trees to make a shopping centre.”
“That’s terrible!” I said, “We have to stop that.”
“I differ with you on that point,” said Karina, “The shopping centre would give new jobs to people. Some people really need work.”
“But think of all the poor birds. They would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”

Passage 1

In ancient China, there were “four treasures of the study”—the writing brush, ink, paper, and the inkstone (砚台). Among all the inkstones, the Chengni inkstone was one of the most famous and was widely loved.
The Chengni inkstone first appeared during the Western Han Dynasty, but the skills of making it were lost during the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. Thankfully, today the traditional skills have been revived (恢复) with the help of Lin Yongmao and his son Lin Tao.

After many tries, she still failed and was very unhappy, “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean in the end,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a voice came, “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, so can a stream.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream replied, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.” “That’s because you can’t give up what you are. If you like to do it, and let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the breeze, it can take you across, and you can reach the ocean,” said the desert.
“Give up what I am now and disappear into the breeze? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. After all, she had never experienced anything like it before.
“The breeze can carry the vapor across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a stream again to continue its course.” explained the desert very patiently.

“People’s jobs are more important, aren’t they?” Karina asked.
