90s Fashion: Back in Style
Walk through any middle school hallway today, and you’ll see students wearing denim jackets, chokers, and scrunchies—all popular fashion trends from the 1990s! This revival isn’t just about looking cool; it’s a way for teens to express themselves.
Fashion is more than just clothes. According to experts, what we wear helps us build confidence and show our personalities. The 90s trend also teaches students about sustainability. Many teens buy secondhand clothing from thrift stores, which reduces waste and saves money. For example, a vintage denim jacket can look just as stylish as a new one but costs much less.
Fashion trends change fast, but some styles last. The return of 90s fashion shows that good design never goes out of date. Whether you prefer bright windbreakers or baggy jeans, the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel comfortable and happy.

Passage 3
Once, fashion was all about shoes that were well-designed and nice-looking, with cool young people having many high heels. But lately, things have changed. Shoes that were once thought “ugly”, like Crocs and Birkenstocks, are now popular for everyday wear among the youth.
So, why do people love these “ugly” shoes?
One of the reasons is how comfortable they are. Birkenstocks, for example, are special because they have flexible (柔韧的) footbeds. After people wear the shoes for a while, the footbeds slowly change to fit their feet.
The choice is also about self-expression. Take Crocs for example: Their thick bottoms and holes might seem strange, but when you add colorful small things to them, they become a fun and special way to stand out.
Carolyn Mair, a professor, said, “Our brains are often attracted to the unusual over the simple. That’s why people are easily attracted to something new and strange.” So, in addition to the comfort value of these shoes, perhaps it is the wish for attention that influences wearers.
Young people’s love for “ugly” shoes is not about saying no to beauty, but it’s about going against old fashion rules. By mixing comfort, creativity and even humor (幽默), they’re changing what “cool” means.
1.What do the underlined words “high heels” mean?
A.Comfortable sports shoes. B.Colorful summer skirts.
C.Beautiful long dresses. D.Shoes with high parts at the back.
2.Why are Birkenstocks popular?
A.They are cheap and people can always buy new ones.
B.They are decorated with colorful designs.
C.Their footbeds can change to fit people’s feet.
D.They have thick bottoms and many small holes.
3.According to Carolyn Mair, what might encourage people to wear “ugly” shoes?
A.Hoping to look perfect. B.Wanting to get attention.
C.Disliking traditional shoe design. D.Considering them as more fashionable.
4.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) toward young people’s love for “ugly” shoes?
A.He thinks it is a good change. B.He thinks it is a bad choice.
C.He feels worried about it. D.He has no idea about it.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.“Ugly” Shoes: A New Fashion for Youth B.Birkenstocks: The Most Comfortable Shoes
C.Fashion Rules That Can Never Be Broken D.How to Make Crocs More Beautiful

Clothes then and now
Today, clothes are made in many different colours. They are also made from many different 1 like wools, cotton, linen and silk. Most people own lots of clothes. Each day, they choose what to wear.

You can learn more about the clothes people used to wear by looking at old paintings and old photos. What clothes will people wear in the future? What styles will people wear? Maybe people in the future will look back at the clothes in fashion today and think they look strange!

Passage 5
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
A new collection has put the spotlight (聚焦) on qipao. Hu Sheguang, known for his creative designs and amazing shows, presented 100 fancy qipao dresses at the CP Center in Beijing during the 2024 AW Beijing Fashion Week.
Lots of models, all in high heels (高跟鞋), walked down the runway to show Hu’s qipao designs. There are four different styles: Flowery Woman, French-style Elegance, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Neo-Chinese Style. These new designs changed how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress that had been around for a century and gave a new look to the old-fashioned Chinese dress.
Qipao first appeared in the 1920s as a loose (宽松的) dress like the one-piece gowns that men wore and then became popular among young women. About ten years later, the dress was changed to fit women’s bodies better, making it necessary among fashionable women, especially in Shanghai, which was considered the fashion capital of China. In the 1940s, qipao became more form-fitting with a high collar (衣领) and tight sleeves (衣袖). By the 1950s, it had become a symbol of elegance (优雅). Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal occasions.
Traditional qipao dresses are usually made of silk, which can be expensive. However, Hu’s designs used different materials, including cotton, linen and leather, to make sure that more women could buy qipao. Hu also made a change to the dress’s buttons (纽扣). To make qipao convenient (方便的) to wear, he used zippers (拉链) in his designs.
“Chinese qipao is usually custom-made to show the wearer’s individuality (个性). Qipao is also so inclusive (包容开放的) that it can be worn for various events, allowing every woman to be fashionable,” Hu said.
1.Did Hu’s qipao designs change how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress?
2.When did qipao become more form-fitting with a high collar and tight sleeves?
3.What materials did Hu’s qipao designs use to make sure that more women could buy qipao?
4.Why did Hu used zippers in his qipao designs?
5.What do you think of qipao?
Passage 6
Have you heard of the horse-face skirt? The skirt has many crossed layers (交叉层), making it look nice. This Chinese skirt started in the Song Dynasty and 1 (see) in the Ming and Qing quite often.
In 2022, French fashion brand (品牌) Dior copied the design of the skirt. Many hanfu lovers began to introduce the knowledge 2 the skirt. This helped more people learn about the traditional (传统的) Chinese clothes. “For us, 3 (wear) the skirt is not just for fashion,” said Mao, one of the hanfu lovers. “It also shows our love for Chinese culture.” Mao said 4 (proud).
Recently, people 5 (pay) more attention to the skirt. Many Chinese famous people have worn it to international events. And during the past spring festival, lots of young people wore the skirt 6 they went on trips.
People in other countries like this skirt, too. Chinese clothing 7 (company) have got a lot of orders for it from abroad. A report studied how popular the skirt was among foreign TikTok users. 8 report found that last year users from more than 90 countries and areas shared content about the skirt! This is a good example of Chinese culture going to the world. And it is also a good way 9 (introduce) Chinese culture.
“New Chinese-style clothes” is also a hot topic. These clothes add traditional Chinese culture to modern designs. They have won the hearts of many people. All these show that we are becoming much more confident in 10 (we) own culture.
