Rabbit Shiny and tortoise (乌龟) Smily were neighbors. One day they were reading a story about their great grandfathers: Shiny’s and Smily’s great grandfathers decided to have a race. While Shiny’s great grandfather went to sleep during the race, Smily’s great grandfather won the race by slowly walking towards the finish line.
Smily said, “If your great grandfather didn’t go to sleep, my great granddad might never win. So his win was not a real win.”
The next day there was a notice in the jungle (丛林) newspaper. It said that there would be a race and the winner would win many prizes(奖品). The race started from the bear’s house. From there, the runners had to cross the river. But most of the animals could not both run fast and swim fast. So they didn’t know what to do. Shiny and Smily made a plan.

Dorothy lives in the middle of a prairie in Kansas. She lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Uncle Henry has got a small farm there. Their house is made of wood and it has only got one room. There isn’t much furniture in it. There’s an old stove for cooking and a cupboard for the cups and plates. There’s a table and three or four chairs and two beds. Uncle Henry and Aunt Em’s big bed is in one corner. Dorothy’s little bed is in another corner.
There isn’t an attic and there isn’t a real cellar. There’s only a small, dark hole under the floor. The family go there when there’s a cyclone. They call the hole “the cyclone cellar”. Cyclones are very strong winds and they’re very dangerous. They move quickly and break everything in the path. There are often cyclones in Kansas.
Uncle Henry and Aunt Em work very hard. They work from morning to night. Uncle Henry looks after the cows, the horses and the chickens. Aunt Em looks after their small house. They never smile or laugh. There isn’t much happiness in their lives. Poor Uncle Henry and Aunt Em!
Dorothy lives with them because she’s an orphan. She hasn’t got a mother or father. Her best friend is her little dog. His name is Toto. He has got long, black hair, black eyes and a little nose. Dorothy loves him very much. Toto plays all day and Dorothy plays with him. He’s very funny and he makes her happy.
Uncle Henry is sitting outside the door of his small house. He’s worried. He’s looking at the sky. It’s full of black clouds. There’s a very strong wind, too. It’s blowing across the prairies. It’s making a loud whistling noise.

I was in the kitchen when Mom asked me to watch the kids because she had to do the dishes in a restaurant. I knew it was more important than swimming. We now lived in a small old mobile home.
Still, I asked, “Couldn’t Julie watch them?”
“She can help, but she’s only ten. I feel better with a fifteen-year-old at home.”
So, I wasn’t playing in the pool but watching my five-year-old sister and three-year-old brother. As a boy, I usually don’t mind watching the kids. Taking care of children really wasn’t the problem. The problem was the weather. In such hot weather, it was really hard for us.
At about ten o’clock, I took the kids out to play. There were some big gray clouds in the sky but I didn’t think anything of it. After about an hour, I found the sky was turning dark green. It was a real tornado (龙卷风)!
I tried hard to remember what we learned in class. That’s it! If you are outside, find the lowest (最低的) place you can.
Our small mobile home was not a perfect place. I thought of the ditch (沟) not far away. “We have to make it to the ditch.” As Julie picked Dougie up, I got Lyssa and a few towels (毛巾).
It was like what we saw in a movie. People were running for their lives. My legs were on fire. Julie cried as she ran, but I couldn’t hear her because of the big noise of the tornado-just see her mouth open as a low sound touched my ears.
“Get down!” I shouted and made everyone lie down, and I covered them with the towels.

No room!” they cried out … “There’s plenty of room!” and she sat down in a large armchair at one end of the table. “Have some wine,” the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.
Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. “I don’t see any wine,” she said. “There isn’t any,” said the March Hare. “Then it was impolite of you not to offer it,” said Alice angrily. “It wasn’t very civil of you to take your seat without invitation,” said the March Hare. “I didn’t know it was your table,” said Alice, “it’s laid (摆放) for a great many more than three.”
“Your hair wants cutting,” said the Hatter. He had been watching Alice for some time. “You should learn not to give your personal ideas,” Alice said seriously (严肃地), “it’s very rude.”
The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this; but all he said was, “Why is a raven (乌鸦) like a writing-desk?” “Come, we shall have some fun now,” said Alice. “I’m glad they’ve begun asking riddles (谜语). I think I can guess that.” she said loudly.
“Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?” said the March Hare. “Exactly so.” said Alice. “Then you should say what you mean.” the March Hare went on. “I do,” Alice quickly replied, “at least—at least I mean what I say—that’s the same thing, you know.”
Finally, they all began to laugh at Alice.

In April 2025, a famous YouTuber iShowSpeed (real name Darren Watkins Jr., also called “甲亢哥” in China) visited China. He didn’t just travel—he jumped into Chinese culture and had lots of fun! One of the coolest things he tried was Hunan embroidery (湘绣).
In Changsha, Speed met a famous embroidery artist named Chang Ni. She showed him how to use a silver needle (银针) to stitch (缝) on silk. Speed gave it a try...and oops! His stitches were messy, and he laughed at himself. But he learned that even mistakes can be part of the art. Then he was amazed at the double-sided embroidery! This special style shows one picture on the front and a different one on the back all on the same cloth. Speed saw a piece with Yuelu Mountain on one side and another design on the other. He shouted, “That’s amazing! That’s different!” At the end, Chang Ni gave Speed a beautiful embroidered fan called Gentle Breeze (清风徐来). It was a gift of friendship.
Speed didn’t stop there. He practiced Kung Fu at the Shaolin Temple. He kicked, punched, and made everyone laugh with his funny moves. He also learned lion dancing and wore cool Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothes). Later in Shanghai, Speed watched a calligraphy show. Then he picked up a brush and tried it himself! He focused hard and carefully made each stroke. It was a quiet moment—different from his usual wild energy.
One fan called him “a digital Marco Polo” (数码马可·波罗). Speed helped show the world that Chinese culture is still alive and exciting.

A dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the two were resting their arms on it, and talking over its head. “Very uncomfortable for the dormouse,” thought Alice, “only, as it’s asleep. I think it doesn’t mind.” The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it. “No room!

Passage 3
(24-25七年级下·江苏南通市如东县·期中)
One night, John came into the stable (马厩), calling, “Wake up, Beauty!”
He put my saddle (马鞍) and bridle (缰绳) on and rode up to the front door of the house. The Squire was there.
“John,” he said, “Mrs. Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”
“Now, Beauty, do your best,” said John. I went as fast as possible.
When we got to Dr White’s house, John told him, “Mrs. Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die. Please go to see her immediately (立刻).” “Yes,” said the doctor, “but my son has my horse. Can I have yours?” he asked.
The doctor was heavier than John, and not such a good rider. But I did my best and went as fast as possible. When we got to Birtwick Park, Squire Gordon was at the door. The doctor went into the house with him, and Joe led me to the stable. I was glad to be home.
My legs were shaking, and I was very wet. Joe was young and he forgot to put a warm blanket (毛毯) on me. Then he gave me cold water to drink. Soon all my body began to shake, and I felt very cold.
A long time later, John came back. He covered me with two or three warm blankets, and ran to the house for some hot water. He gave me some warm food, and then I think I went to sleep.
Over and over again, John said to himself, “Stupid (愚蠢的) boy! Stupid boy!”
I was now very sick, and John was nursing me night and day.
The Squire came to see me. “Poor Beauty,” he said one day. “You saved Mrs. Gordon’s life.”
John said, “Black Beauty went so fast. He seemed to know what was wrong.”

Now Wang has turned himself into a calmer player. “I just want to keep improving,” Wang told China Daily.
