The Chengni inkstone first appeared during the Western Han Dynasty, but the skills of making it were lost during the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. Thankfully, today the traditional skills have been revived (恢复) with the help of Lin Yongmao and his son Lin Tao.

In Changsha, Speed met a famous embroidery artist named Chang Ni. She showed him how to use a silver needle (银针) to stitch (缝) on silk. Speed gave it a try...and oops! Born in Shanxi, China, Liu loved visiting ancient temples and pagodas (寺庙和佛塔) near his hometown as a child. These buildings used a special woodworking skill called the mortise-and-tenon joint structure (榫卯结构). This skill has a history of over 7, 000 years. It puts pieces together without nails or glue (钉子和胶水). Liu thought the traditional structures were creative and amazing. He wanted people to touch and play with them, not just to look at them in museums.
When he grew up, Liu came up with the idea of making mortise-and-tenon building blocks (积木). He started reading books and visiting ancient buildings to learn more. He tried to make small models of mortise-and-tenon structures using the same woodworking skill. But that was not easy. The small parts needed to fit perfectly to stay balanced. Liu tried many times and also learned from village craftsmen.
In 2013, Liu finally created his first sets of building blocks. They sold out quickly online. Later, he opened his own workshop and used plastic (塑料) for some parts to lower costs. His cheapest set costs about 100 yuan, so more kids can afford to play with them. “This craft is part of Chinese culture. I’m glad to help keep it alive,” Liu says. In ancient China, there were “four treasures of the study”—the writing brush, ink, paper, and the inkstone (砚台). Among all the inkstones, the Chengni inkstone was one of the most famous and was widely loved.
In 1984, Lin Yongmao began working at the museum in Xinjiang, got to know Shanxi Chengni inkstone, and then decided to revive the lost skills.
It was easier said than done. It took the father and the son two years to find proper materials to produce the Chengni inkstone. That was just the first step. After failing many times, they finally succeeded in making two Chengni inkstones in 1991. Three years later, their Chengni inkstones won a gold prize at an expo (博览会) on China’s famous inkstones.
But the father and son did not stop here. While improving the skills of making the Chengni inkstone, they set up a workshop in the hope of passing the skills on to young people. They also worked with universities and colleges to make the Chengni inkstone more popular. Passage 5
In April 2025, a famous YouTuber iShowSpeed (real name Darren Watkins Jr., also called “甲亢哥” in China) visited China. He didn’t just travel—he jumped into Chinese culture and had lots of fun! One of the coolest things he tried was Hunan embroidery (湘绣).
In Changsha, Speed met a famous embroidery artist named Chang Ni. She showed him how to use a silver needle (银针) to stitch (缝) on silk. Speed gave it a try...and oops! His stitches were messy, and he laughed at himself. But he learned that even mistakes can be part of the art. Then he was amazed at the double-sided embroidery! This special style shows one picture on the front and a different one on the back all on the same cloth. Speed saw a piece with Yuelu Mountain on one side and another design on the other. He shouted, “That’s amazing! That’s different!” At the end, Chang Ni gave Speed a beautiful embroidered fan called Gentle Breeze (清风徐来). It was a gift of friendship.
Speed didn’t stop there. He practiced Kung Fu at the Shaolin Temple. He kicked, punched, and made everyone laugh with his funny moves. He also learned lion dancing and wore cool Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothes). Later in Shanghai, Speed watched a calligraphy show. Then he picked up a brush and tried it himself! He focused hard and carefully made each stroke. It was a quiet moment—different from his usual wild energy.
One fan called him “a digital Marco Polo” (数码马可·波罗). Speed helped show the world that Chinese culture is still alive and exciting. Passage 12
Do you know Liu Wenhui? As one of Forbes China’s top 100 outstanding craftsmen of 2024, he is turning ancient Chinese buildings into toys.
He hopes his toys will help share China’s ancient wisdom (智慧) with the world.
