Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Revision and Leading in Activity 1 Revision and Leading in 1. Review the main content of the text and language items learned in the previous period. 2. Lead in the learning topic of this period and introduce the learning objectives. Present the writing requirements. Choose an environmental problem that directly affects you or your local community. And use what you have learned to write a report on the environmental issue. 2. Get the students to consider the following questions to have an idea of what to write. 1) What is the issue? Why does it need to be dealt with? 2) Where does the issue occur? What are its causes? What effects does it have? 3) What actions have been taken so far? What future actions are planned? 4) Has the issue been dealt with well? Is it likely to be solved completely? Why or why not? What alternative solutions are possible? 3. Talk about the organization and useful expressions for a report. 1) Suggested organization. (Following the report in the textbook.) Paragraph 1—Topic: what + why necessary? Paragraph 2 —Problem: where? cause? effect? Encourage the students to go through the text and underline the related expressions they can use in their writing. Read the sample writings for reference. Sample writing 1 Litter is a big issue in our local community. We must deal with it because it is bad for local wildlife and it makes our community look terrible. This mostly occurs in our local park. It is caused by people dropping food wrappers from the nearby fast food restaurant. So far, we make sure the park is cleaned every day. We have added more rubbish bins in the park to make it easier for people to dispose of this waste. We also spoke to the fast food restaurant and asked them to encourage people to dispose of their waste properly. There is a plan to add more bins and signs to inform people about the need to dispose of waste properly. We have also asked the restaurant to provide help in cleaning up their waste. The issue has been dealt with well, but more work is needed. It is hard to deal with these issues because there is a never-ending source of waste as people will always need to buy food. In the future, the best solution would be to find alternative ways of packaging. Sample writing 2 With the development of the economy, our hometown has witnessed severe air pollution for several years. This report looks at the causes of air pollution and some useful actions. The severe air pollution alarms us of the heavy load we have exerted on Earth by our inappropriate actions. Therefore, urgent steps should be taken to alleviate this issue. Initially, industrial companies should adopt new forms of energy as substitutes for fossil fuels. Also, governments can carry out inspections regularly. As for individuals, they should raise environmental awareness and try more environment-friendly transportation means instead of private cars. With these measures, it is believed that the fresh air of our hometown will be preserved for generations to enjoy. Let’s spare no effort to make contributions to alleviating air pollution problem of our hometown! Step 4 Writing practice Activity 4 Writing practice 1. Practice writing the first draft in class, using the checklist as your writing standards. 2. (If time permits,) Exchange drafts with a partner and revise each other’s drafts, using the checklist as a criteria. Step 5 Summary and evaluation Activity 5 Summary Summarize the main contents of this period briefly by emphasizing how to write a report on an environmental issue and encourage students to take actions to protect the environment. Activity 6 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your writing performance?
