Looking for a big-leafed houseplant that will make a statement in your room and decorate yourhome? If so, then you’ve come to the right place!
Peace Lily
Extremely easy to look after, this popular, flowering plant is very tolerant and undemanding. It is a beloved houseplant for its large, glossy oval leaves and unusual white spoon-shaped flowers. Typically blooming in the spring, this lovely plant can effectively brighten up a living space.
African Mask Plant
This indoor plant is a smaller plant with large dark green leaves that are shaped like a heart. Native to tropical (热带的) parts of Africa, it prefers high heat and high humidity. That can be somewhat a tricky task for the average plant owner to achieve in their home, who is likely to have trouble duplicating (复制) these steamy conditions.
Snake plant
Commonly referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue, it is one of the easiest houseplants to take care of. With tall, twisting sword-shaped leaves that grow upright, it has air-purifying capabilities and can merrily grow in almost dark corners of the house. But the plant is poisonous to dogs and cats, so it’s wise to keep this plant away from them, if your pets are plant chewers.
Kentia Palm
Caring for the Kentia Palm plant is very straightforward, which can be neglected for weeks at a time. Quite enjoying a bit of shade, it has big leaves that grow from a narrow base and is great for filling a corner without taking up much floor-space. Place it in front of a blank wall, and its archingfronds (大型复叶) will cast beautiful shadows.

Excitement filled the air as we were aboard the ship to Antarctica, enjoying the warmth of the room. Then one morning we saw a sign announcing an open invitation to all passengers: Polar Plunge (极地跳水) at 12:30.
My husband and I stared at the sign. His face brightened, but I had a wave of panic in my stomach. Hundreds of reasons for not doing it filled my mind. “No way,” I said. “For starters, we’re much too old. The water’s freezing cold. Heights terrify me. I’m not much of a swimmer. Not only that,” I complained, “but it means I’d have to wear a swimsuit publicly with so many people looking at my fat body.” He gave me a quick hug along with his appealing smile. “We’ll never have another chance,” he insisted. My determination gradually weakened. My heart “No way” gave way to a weak “Maybe”. Finally I forced myself to say, “Okay. Let’s go for it.”
Dressed in our swimsuits and shaking with anxiety, we gathered with the other participants in the lower part of the ship. I eyed the group. A daring teen tried to be first in line. A twenty-something woman in a bikini also stepped forward. The remaining few ranged in age from enthusiastic young people to middle-aged adults joking and laughing. We two eighty-year-olds were visibly the ancient, senior citizens of the group.
Our turn came all too soon. We moved onto the jump-off point, legs shaking, but it was too late to turn back. We held our hands together, took a deep breath, and took the Polar Plunge into the icy ocean. After what seemed a century, we rose to the surface and swam to the safety platform. Shaking and laughing, I shouted excitedly, “I can’t believe I did that.” That afternoon, I gained my fame and became the focus of the day.
In my memory bank, I’ve stored that fame, and it will last the rest of my life. However, my one-time, completely wild risk is enough. Ah, but the brief moment of fame was so wonderful.

You might text your friend a white lie to get out of going to dinner, exaggerate your height on a CV online to appear more attractive or invent an excuse for your boss over email to save face.
Social psychologists have long wondered where people tend to lie the most — that is, in person or through some other communication medium. A 2004 study was among the first to investigate the connection between deception (欺骗) rates and technology. Jeff Hancock’s team had 28 students report the number of social interactions they had through face-to-face communication, the phone, instant messaging and email over seven days. Students also reported the number of times they lied in each social interaction.
The results suggested people told the most lies on the phone and the fewest through email, which is broadly in line with a “feature-based model”. According to the model, specific aspects of a technology — whether people can communicate back and forth smoothly, whether the messages are fleeting and whether communicators are distant — predict where people tend to lie the most.
When Hancock conducted his study, few students had a Facebook account. The iPhone was in its early stage. What would his results look like nearly 20 years later?
In a new study, I recruited (招募) 250 people and studied interactions from more forms of technology. The participants recorded their social interactions and number of interactions with a lie over seven days, across face-to-face communication, social media, the phone, texting, video chat and email. The results show people seem to lie according to the “feature-based model”.
There are several possible explanations for these results. Phone and video chat, for example, might make deception less costly to a social relationship if caught. Deception rates might also differ across technology because people use some forms of technology for certain social relationships. For example, people might only email their colleagues (同事), while video chat might be a better fit for more personal relationships.
People often believe just because we use technology to interact, honesty is harder to come by. Not only is this perception (看法) misguided, but it is also unsupported by enough evidence. The belief that lying is common in the digital age just doesn’t match the data.
8. What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph?
A. Reveal the tendency of people to tell lies on social media.
B. Introduce the topic of technology’s role in people’s telling lies.
C. Demonstrate the increasing popularity of social media.
D. Illustrate people’s ways of social interactions.
9. What do the studies by Hancock and the author have in common?
A. Their participants were all students.
B. They both aimed to reduce deception rates.
C. Their results were both consistent with a certain model.
D. They analyzed the same kind of social relationships.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 6?
A. Social media users tend to lie more.
B. Close people are more likely to lie to each other.
C. Lying can greatly influence friendships.
D. Deception rates can be reduced by using technology.
11. What does the author think of people lying in social interactions?
A. It is unacceptable among friends.
B. It worsens interpersonal relationships.
C. It doesn’t happen as frequently as expected.
D. It is in line with advances in technology
D
Have you ever fancied a tennis lesson from one of the world’s greatest tennis players at your local court?
This dream came true for two young players, who got to train with 20-year-old superstar Emma Raducanu after she appeared as a hologram—a photographic recording of the image. While Sam Clague, 14, and Diamond Paisley, 12, were both in London, the British number one was in Abu Dhabi.
During the world’s first holographic lesson, Ms Raducanu’s avatar appeared to feed balls to the players and gave live feedback on their shots, like “that was fast and there was lots of topspin on that”. Even Sam said he thought she had been prerecorded at first until she spoke with him directly.
Their holographic training session offers a glimpse into how advancing technology could revolutionize tennis coaching, according to Dr Ian Pearson.
Dr Pearson thinks that mixed reality headsets will soon allow tennis players to feel they are playing in unusual virtual environments, like on a space station or the middle of a lake Through 5G, the future of tennis will see increased interaction between real life tennis courts and the rich imagination we see in computer games-playing whenever, wherever and whoever you want.
Full sensory virtual reality could even place the viewer inside the tennis player’s shoes in real time. Dr Pearson said: “By 2030, with active skin technology, the playing styles and even the sensations of top-level players could be captured, so that anyone could experience how it actually felt to play that game through full sensory virtual reality.”
Finally, sportswear made from smart materials could allow for a digital coach powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to provide feedback on a player’s form. Dr Pearson said: “Al-controlled suits made from smart materials, such as fabrics with sensors, can help players find the perfect stroke when hitting or returning a serve by quickly learning the muscle memory of a flawless forehand. Using direct feedback from friendly virtual AI coaches, new players can develop and learn much more quickly.”
12. What did Ms Raducanu do in the first holographic lesson?
A. Give players a real time guidance. B. Require players to follow her shots.
C. Record coaching contents in advance. D. Share her experiences through the hologram.
13. What can full sensory virtual reality make viewers do?
A. Increase their imagination of sports. B. Take the place of top level players.
C. Experience the feeling of players on the spot. D. Have a sense of playing in an unusual place.
14. What’s Dr Pearson’s attitude towards virtual AI coaches?
A. Critical. B. Skeptical. C. Cautious. D. Favorable.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future of coaching. B. The threat from AI to coaches.
C. The first live coaching online. D. The appearance of digital coaches.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family. But as the weekend comes to an end, many of us are missing out on Sunday Funday and instead experiencing a sense of anxiety. Experts have dubbed (戏称) this worry the “Sunday scaries.” ____16____. Here’s how experts say you can overcome your end-of-weekend anxiety.
Structure your Sunday
Structure can be a best friend when feeling the Sunday scaries. ____17____ . You might still get a sense of fear, but that feeling is harder to hold on to when you’re engaging in something that makes you feel good.
____18____
When structuring your Sunday, try not to arrange too many errands and chores (事务). If you’re feeling more stress in general, it’s important to make space for relaxing activities to ground yourself. And there’s no right way to relax. Maybe a mid-afternoon shower or bath, maybe an engaging movie or show.
Identify your anxiety sources
____19____ . Is it a deadline, meeting or presentation? Even if there’s not a single reason behind your Sunday anxiety, experts recommend creating multiple to-do lists to make it all more manageable. One list for tasks that need to be completed immediately, another for tasks that are less urgent, and a final list for tasks that you’d like to complete at some point.
Create some excitement for the week ahead
Having something to look forward to gives you something to think about that’s pleasing, rather than only focusing on the fear you feel. Instead of focusing on the awful things you expect from the week, build excitement over a coffee or lunch date with a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with. ____20____ .
A. Don’t forget to relax
B. Stop doing errands and chores
C. Try to figure out what’s really causing you to fear the week
D. But even though the Sunday scaries are common, they are manageable
E. Instead of sitting on the couch and watching the clock, do something you enjoy
F. This allows you to shift your thoughts to something fun and helps improve your mood
G. It is an overwhelming feeling of fear and anxiety about going to work or school the next day

We moved onto the jump-off point legs shaking, but it was too late to turn back.

C

Finally sportswear made from smart materials could allow for a digital coach powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to provide feedback on a player’s form.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. A
