When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa, “I’m going to be an athlete (运动员).”
“Dave,” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added another mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it--17 miles on my 17th birthday.
All this running inspired another big dream. someday, I’d run the Boston Marathon (波士顿马拉松赛). I told Grandpa about my decision.
“But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he still promised to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day, but I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.”
“I did?” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step. As I crossed the finishing line, I threw my arms in the air and cried, “Grandpa, we did it!”

Some people are worried about the effect (影响) that social media (媒体) has on the lives of young people. The following text was written by a reporter. He tried to find out whether social media has a positive (积极的) or negative (消极的) effect on children.
Social media websites are communities where users can share photos and talk to each other online. They are very popular — millions of people use social media every day. Although some people think social media is a positive thing, many are worried about the negative effects it can have on young people. James, a 15-year-old student, thinks that social media has many benefits. “I get very nervous when I talk to people in real life — I find it so much easier to express myself when I use social media. Another advantage is that I hardly ever forget anyone’s birthday now because I can look it up online!” Lots of users agree that social media helps young people stay connected to their friends and make new friends from around the world.
However, social media also has many problems. Social media may help young people find friends, but it also makes it easier for bullies (霸凌者) to hurt them. Some parents believe that social media makes it harder for families to spend time together. They say their children are so crazy about social media that they ignore (忽视) the rest of their family. Many teachers think social media can distract (使…分心) their students from schoolwork.
There is no doubt that social media has some problems, and it is very important to avoid spending too much time online. However, generally speaking, social media can be a positive thing for young people. It is a way for nervous people to make friends, and for young people to stay connected.

Recharge (充电) Your Body’s Battery (电池)
My phone is showing that little red low-battery sign. What if I didn’t recharge it — no, that would stress me out. But what if I took a few minutes to recharge myself — yes, that would help. But how can we make it? 36
Tell yourself the truth.
When something stressful happens, we often can’t help taking a deep breath at first. But we control what happens next. It’s possible to work with our stress, rather than against it. 37 “My body is producing energy to help me deal with it.”
Turn your attention to joy.
To protect energy stores, turn your attention to being present. Pay attention to what you can feel thankful for. Smiling can reduce stress. 38 Plant something in your day that you look forward to.
Work your stress out.
You might think all your feelings live in your brain. But in fact, we feel them with our whole bodies. 39 It can change how you feel. Also, heating up and cooling down, like taking a shower, may cheer you up.
40
Being in crowded and busy places sends our bodies signs of danger. We can recharge our batteries with green space time — look for a park, gardens, or plants to calm our bodies and minds.
Life is short. It’s even shorter living on half a battery. We can break our daily stress habits and create more energy.
根据短文内容,将下面方框内的句子还原到文中空白处,使短文内容完整、通顺(每个选项只能用一次,有一项是多余的)。
A. Thank it and remind yourself,
B. Relax yourself in green.
C. My energy is running out.

Citywalk is becoming a new travel fashion for the youth in China who are exploring (探索) cultural spots (景点). Unlike traditional travel, it aims (旨在) to avoid famous tourist spots and large crowds to get a better experience.
Many young people enjoy hanging out in the streets when they visit a new city. They can follow a typical city route (路线), exploring old buildings, going window-shopping, drinking a cup of coffee, or enjoying local snacks.
In order to show their Citywalk, more and more people prefer to share their experiences and thoughts through social media (媒体). Shanghai has set up Citywalk bus routes to help day-trippers (游客) reach more faraway areas first, and then continue on foot.
Citywalk not only offers a way for young people to explore a city but also provides them with a new social situation, where they can share their interests and ideas and make friends easily. Forty-eight hours in Hong Kong may sound like a short trip, but it will surprise you how much you can see and do. The best way to get the most out of your trip is to plan carefully ahead of time.
Hong Kong has a great public transportation system that is easy to use. The system is called the MTR, which includes the metro (地铁), trains and buses. You can get a card called the Octopus (八达通) Card at a metro station and use it to travel around. Taxis are another way to get around Hong Kong. There are many taxis everywhere.
On the first day, go up Victoria Peak (太平山顶). At the top of the mountain, you will see beautiful city views. Then have “dim sum (点心)” for lunch. Dim sum is made up of many different dishes. It is a great way to taste a little bit of everything. In the afternoon, take the Star Ferry (渡轮) from Hong Kong Island and cross Victoria Harbor (海港) to Kowloon (九龙). There are many markets to explore in this area. Temple Market and Ladies Market are very popular. At 8:00 p.m., join the crowd that is watching the Symphony (交响乐) of Lights, which is a fifteen-minute light show around Hong Kong’s tall buildings.
