By the early 1950s, several expeditions (远征) had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese (尼泊尔的) climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world. Hillary’s spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before. Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust (信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88. But I’m poor, so can you please help me?” Speechless, I stared in the man’s eyes full of tears and asked how I could help. After we talked for a while, I went to sit back at the table. JoJo asked me, “What’s wrong with you? Your face changed.” I told him. JoJo was sorry for this family and said I had the means through the media to help him. Later we headed off to our destinations. JoJo is so busy with his hotel business that I never imagined he had time to come and see me at the studios. “Please, call the man with the sick child and tell him that I’ll pay all expenses for his sick daughter’s treatment,” JoJo said, with a cheque in his hand. “I’ve been married for 35 years. I wasn’t lucky enough to have a child. I want to help this child now.” I picked up the phone to call James. Now James’ daughter is well and living a normal life. JoJo often visits her. What makes the populations of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats. With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction(灭绝) of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction. Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance. Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点), it is remarkably difficult for them to return. 46. What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs? A. The living habits of species in food webs. B. The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems. C. The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems. D. The differences between weak and strong links in food webs. 47. A strong link is found between two species when a predator ________. A. has a wide food choice B. can easily find new prey C. sticks to one prey species D. can quickly move to another place 48. What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline? A. The prey species they directly attack will die out. B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators. C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged. D. The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes. 49. What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4? A. Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems. B. Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats. C. Species of commercial value dominate other species. D. Industrial activities help keep food webs stable. 50. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance? A. By getting illegal practices under control. B. By stopping us from killing large predators. C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal. D. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action. 【答案】46. B 47. C 48. D 49. A 50. With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs.可知,借助食物网的数学模型,科学家们发现了食物网中的一些关键原则。故选B。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked.可知,当捕食者总是吃大量的单一猎物,这两个物种是紧密相连的。故选C。 【48题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack. And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. It made me feel very important because it was a precious gift to me in the year when a printed diary was rare. During the first week of my life as a diary owner, I kept looking at it. My heart filling with pride. In the second week, I suddenly felt nervous. I had not written a single word in the diary. And now each page seemed to be looking at me in sorrow for the way it was being gored, so I decided to keep an account of how I spent the day at school. I kept my promise to the diary, every day after coming back from school, I would take out the diary, open the page dated for that day and write about what happened but a stranger thing happened. But a strange thing happened—each page looked dull, instead of looking as if it came straight out of a famous writer’s book. I recently read a 4000-year-old account of a young boy’s day in school. It surrounded almost the same thing as mine! This boy was from Summer. The Sumerians, as they were called invented a lot of things. They constructed the first cities. They invested writing an idea that children must go to a place like school for education. What was the account of the boy’s day in school like? Well almost like mine but 4,000 years ago! I read it in a book called, The Mammoth Book of How it Happened, by Jon E. Lewis. In a fascinating manner, he has put the important and usual things together into one collection, eye-witness accounts of moments in history, also eventful and ordinary. The book told me that for schoolchildren anywhere in the world and probably at any time in history, school has always meant the same. Perhaps writing diaries too. 61. Why did the diary make the author feel important? (no more than 20 words) 62. How did the author feel when he reads 4000-year-old account of a young boy’s day?(No more than 5 words) 63. Who is Jon E. Lewis? (No more than 15 words) 64. What does the underlined word “eventful” is Paragraph 4 mean?(1 word) 65. What do you think about writing dairies? (No more than 20 words) 【答案】61. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. On arriving at the beach, I saw JoJo, a wealthy man in the hotel business. We sat down to chat in an open air cafe. Suddenly our conversation was interrupted by a stranger, who politely asked permission to speak to me. Often people want to tell me something about my conversation TV show, when I’m out on the streets. He asked to speak to me privately, so we stood a bit away from my table. He said. “I’m James, 35 years old, father of a 7-year-old girl, who’s very sick. She needs treatment abroad. The doctors said that if she was treated in the UK, she would probably survive. All weekend I thought about James, his daughter and his family. I even thought about doing a special TV show to raise money for this sick child. On Monday morning I was at the office after I finished presenting my show, when my secretary said a man needed to speak to me. It was JoJo. He walked into my office. I’m so happy that there are so many good people on this earth. 41. According to the text, the author __________. The media are powerful. B. Kind people are everywhere. C. Famous hosts are always troubled. D. Even the richest person is not always lucky. C How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work?
