Section Ⅴ “Extended reading”的课文习读环节 [课时检测] Ⅰ.阅读理解 A Tom is an expert from a robotics company who can communicate smoothly with people through computers, phones, and other means. However, when facing the crowd on site, he will feel uneasy. His boss arranged for Tom to showcase to the audience the innovative work their company is doing. In response to the boss's trust in him, Tom bravely began preparing for this matter. One day, while watching TV, he happened to see a program where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur interacted with the audience through a dummy (假人) to convey information. This gave him inspiration. The next day, he discussed his idea with his colleagues in the company and everyone supported his plan. On the day of the exhibition, they arrived at the scene early and prepared everything, although Tom was still a bit nervous. The much-anticipated presentation started. The presenter began with a light-hearted joke and then proceeded to share some interesting facts about Reality Robotics Company before revealing the innovative work the company was undertaking. Throughout the presentation, there were no pauses or instances of Tom's dreaded phrase: “but what I really meant to say was.” The audience was impressed by the innovative product the presenter described and hoped for a demonstration to see how effective the new invention was. As the presentation drew to a close, the presenter said calmly and confidently, “And now I would like to share this stage with the man who invented me.” Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly like the presenter. The “identical twins” took the audience by surprise. Tom then spoke slowly, “What you have just witnessed is a demonstration of the latest invention from the company — a presentation robot.” Suddenly it all clicked and the audience erupted in cheers. Tom then explained how the company created such a robot and programmed it to speak. “As you could see and hear, it had the confidence I could never exhibit in such a presentation. We can model it into an exact copy of you.” The audience got excited at the prospect. The boss smiled approvingly. Maybe Tom deserved a promotion, he thought. 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了Tom,一位来自机器人公司的专家,如何克服在公众面前演讲的紧张感,并通过一个创新的演示机器人成功地展示了他们公司的最新发明。 1.What's Tom's problem? A.He tended to get nervous easily. Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation.People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person's thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound.By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation. The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫).As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes (电极) placed onto their brain.Edward Chang, who led the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients' brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them. Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients' brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76% of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61% of the time. Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained.Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back.Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.” 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。科学家尝试发明可以“读懂”人类思想的软件,希望可以帮助因患病而无法说话的人们。 5.What is the disadvantage of previous technologies? A smart refrigerator is any refrigerator that's equipped with a Wi-Fi connection. It can share information about itself, be a real-time camera that lets users see what's inside while at the supermarket, or act as a digital command center for the home. Some other things smart fridges are able to do include raising or lowering the temperature at the sound of your voice or with your phone, or helping you track the contents of your fridge so you don't run into a milk shortage emergency. Smart fridges can be particularly good at keeping food cool. It's easier to adjust the temperature if it is higher than it should be because the door is left slightly open. This can make a difference in your energy bills and the quality and lifespan (寿命) of your food. Many of the smart fridge's features can also save you time when you're rushing to get ready in the morning. The people who will benefit most from a smart fridge are probably those who have children who might be using the fridge while parents are at work. It's another way you can keep an eye on what's going on at home when you're not there. However, prices do tend to run higher than traditional fridges. If you already have a food organizational system that's working very well for you, and you are cool with the way your fridge is handling your food, then a smart fridge may not be worth it.However, if the smart fridge's features mentioned above sound like they would make your life easier, then one could be worth the extra money. 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一款新型的智能冰箱。 9.What can a smart refrigerator do?
