When was the last time you thought about music, and what role does music play in your life? If you enjoy music every day, you are likely gaining many benefits.
Music has a mathematical structure based on relationships between one note and the next. You may not be aware of it, but your brain has to do a lot of computing to make sense of it. So, not surprisingly, listening to music can improve learning, memory, and mental alertness (警觉性). It also boosts concentration and mindfulness, as listening, playing, or moving to music keeps you focused in the present moment and even puts you “in the zone” where you experience the happy state of “flow”.
Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, and improve sleep quality, mood, well-being, and happiness. And especially when moving to music, your brain gets washed in beneficial “feel-good” hormones (激素). So music can potentially extend your life and enhance its quality.
Music is a vital element of culture, and every culture has specific types of music created, produced, and enjoyed by its people. In the U. S. alone, there are dozens of popular types, including Afro-beat, bluegrass, classical, and country. All these types of music have different origins and are associated with different subcultures, but they can be enjoyed by anyone, leading to cross-cultural appreciation and communication. Musical traditions are also connected to cultural celebrations — think about the music you associate with birthdays, graduations, weddings, and so on.
Your music preference in the moment can depend on how you want to feel. You likely pick specific types of music depending on whether you’re looking to relax or exercise, trying to be productive, or romantic. The right music can boost your mood and motivation to clean up, do homework, or work out. In contrast, you likely avoid music that makes you sad, or bored.
8. What is the function of the question in the beginning?
A. To put forward a new concept.
B. To offer some advice for readers.
C. To get the information of your interest.
D. To lead in the topic to be talked about.
9. Why can listening to music improve your ability to pay attention?
A. It keeps you concentrated. B. It makes you do computing.
C. It builds relations between notes. D. It draws your interest in new things.
10. The author mentions American music in paragraph 4 to show that ______.
A. music connects different peoples
B the USA is a country with diverse cultures
C. each type of music is enjoyed by unique people
D. not all kinds of music are popular with people
11. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. Music has little effect on people’s emotions.
B. People choose music based on their desired emotions.
C. All types of music make people feel energetic.
D. Sad music is always avoided by people.
D
In their recent book, The AI Con, linguist Emily M. Bender and social scientist Alex Hanna critically analyze the widespread exaggeration (夸大) about artificial intelligence (AI). They argue that the exaggerated claims of AI’s transformative power obscure the real, ongoing harms it is already causing.
Bender and Hanna argue that companies are using AI to reduce costs by undermining human jobs. Contrary to popular belief, “AI is not going to replace your job,” they maintain, but it will likely transform your job into one that is undervalued and less paid. Here, they refer to recent labor actions, such as the 2023 strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, as cases illustrating workers’ resistance to AI-generated content.
In fields such as education, the use of automated decision-making systems often reflects the overconfidence in AI’s capacity. The adoption of AI, the authors maintain, overlooks fundamental human interactions, falsely assuming that “seeking the right answers is all that is needed for education.”
The book also evaluates exaggerated claims about AI’s impact on creative and scientific fields, particularly regarding its destructive effects on art, journalism, and scientific practice. The authors argue that AI-generated artistic creativity is, most of the time, based on statistical probabilities rather than real understanding.
Bender and Hanna conclude their book by arguing that the exaggeration about AI primarily benefits major companies, investors, and governments that use technology and by calling for a critical examination of AI systems: “What is being automated?” and “Who benefits... and who is harmed?”
While the book offers an interesting viewpoint, it provides only a partial view of the current AI landscape. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promising capabilities in fields such as biomedicine and ecology. This potential application is particularly noticeable considering the new path opened by agentic AI, an area the book does not cover.
12. The word “obscure” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. reveal B. hide
C. exaggerate D. worsen
13. Why do the authors mention the 2023 Hollywood strikes?
A. To prove AI has replaced numerous jobs in the film industry.
B. To show workers’ opposition to AI’s harm to their work value.
C. To illustrate the high cost of AI-generated content production.
D. To argue that AI cannot create quality artistic works.
14. Which of the following would Bender and Hanna most likely agree with?
A. AI brings more high-paying jobs for workers.
B. AI’s “creativity” is based on real understanding.
C. Education should focus only on seeking right answers.
D. AI exaggeration serves the interests of the capital side.
15. What can we learn about The AI Con from the last paragraph?
A. It fully covers the latest developments in AI.
B. It denies the potential of LLMs in biomedicine.
C. It ignores the new field of agentic AI.
D It is widely criticized by AI researchers.

The day before yesterday, my class played a basketball game. As their chemistry teacher and class advisor, I watched as our team, led by Tom, the captain, fought hard. Tom’s quick moves and precise passes inspired his teammates. They battled as one, making every play count. The game was intense, with both teams neck and neck. In the final seconds, Tom made a daring drive to the hoop (篮筐), but the opponent scored a last-minute shot. We lost by just one point.
The next morning, the classroom was filled with a heavy atmosphere. Tom sat quietly, his head down, still weighed down by the loss. The rest of the class mirrored his mood—silent and withdrawn. It was clear that the defeat had dampened their spirits. I knew I had to do something to lift their spirits and remind them to paying more attention to the process.
The first class of the day was chemistry. As I looked at the lesson plan quickly, an idea began to take shape. I quickly prepared the necessary laboratory equipment and walked into the classroom.
“Alright, everyone,” I said, trying to get their attention. “I’m going to conduct an experiment, and I want you to observe it carefully. You’ll need to describe what you see afterward.” The room grew a little quieter as curiosity began to catch on. They turned their attention to me, and I could see a sign of interest in their eyes.
I picked up a piece of magnesium ribbon (镁条) and held it with a holder. When I brought it close to the burner fire, the ribbon started to flash. The whole class watched the experiment in amazement, their eyes wide open, focusing on my operation in awe. The magnesium ribbon burned away, leaving behind a soft white powder.

D. It is widely criticized by AI researchers.
B 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第一段中“They argue that the exaggerated claims of AI’s transformative power obscure the real, ongoing harms it is already causing.(他们认为,有关人工智能变革力量的夸大说法……它已经造成的实际且持续的危害。)”可知,作者认为对 AI 变革力量的夸大说法,与它造成的实际危害之间是“掩盖”的关系。结合前文“critically analyze the widespread exaggeration(批判普遍的夸大宣传)”,可推知“obscure”意为“掩盖,隐藏”,和B选项hide“隐藏”意思一致。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Here, they refer to recent labor actions, such as the 2023 strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, as cases illustrating workers’ resistance to AI-generated content.( 在此,他们将近期的劳工行动,如 2023 年好莱坞编剧和演员的罢工,作为工人抵制人工智能生成内容的案例加以说明。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Bender and Hanna conclude their book by arguing that the exaggeration about AI primarily benefits major companies, investors, and governments that use technology and by calling for a critical examination of AI systems.(本德和汉纳在本书的结尾处指出,关于人工智能的夸大宣传主要有利于使用技术的大型公司、投资者和政府,并呼吁对人工智能系统进行批判性审视。)”
根据最后一段中“This potential application is particularly noticeable considering the new path opened by agentic AI, an area the book does not cover.(考虑到自主型人工智能开辟的新路径,这种潜在的应用尤为显著,而这本书并未涵盖这一领域。)”

When I brought it close to the burner fire the ribbon started to flash. The whole class watched the experiment in amazement, their eyes wide open, focusing on my operation in awe. The magnesium ribbon burned away, leaving behind a soft white powder.

One possible version:
“What impressed you most in the experiment?” I asked. Hands shot up, and one student said, “The magnesium ribbon burned so brightly, even though it turned into powder at the end.” I nodded, “Exactly! It’s like our basketball game. The process of striving, the teamwork, and the effort you put in are what truly matter, not just the final score.” The students seemed to understand, their faces brightening. I could see the wheels turning in their minds as they connected the experiment to their own experiences.
With my encouragement, Tom opened up and shared more. “I realized we shouldn’t be too focused on winning or losing,” he said. “We should enjoy the process and learn from it.” The class nodded in agreement. From then on, they started to train harder, focusing on improving their skills rather than just the outcome. Over time, their efforts paid off. In the next school activity, they performed exceptionally well, showing great teamwork and a positive attitude.
