Interested in building a schoolyard habitat? Here's how to get started.
Gather a team.
Students can do a lot on their own, but you'll need adults for a project this big.Get teachers, parents, and even the headmaster interested.Don't forget the maintenance staff — they know more about your school's yard than anyone else and can give you lots of help.
Map your site.
Which part of the schoolyard can you turn into a habitat? Is there an unused corner of the playground? You'll need to make a map of the area showing what is there now. Then you can figure out how you want to change it.For that, you need a plan.
Plan a habitat.
Here's what you'll need to make your area attractive to wildlife.
Food: Plant flowers and trees. These provide foods for birds, insects, and small animals. You can also add some feeders for birds.Where possible, stick with native plants — wild plants that grow naturally in your area. They need less care, which means less work for you.
Water: A small pond, a bird bath, or even a dish of clean water on the ground will attract birds.
Shelter: Trees make great escapes for birds.Tall grass and weeds are home to insects and some birds.
Reach for resources.
To make the habitat happen, you'll need lots of plants, seeds, and other supplies. You'll also need to buy or borrow tools and maybe even some heavy tools. It is the time to reach out for donations (捐赠).Start by asking your parent-teacher organization. Then go to garden clubs, garden stores (they might give you a discount), local government agencies, and businesses. If they can't donate supplies or money, ask if they can donate workers!
Build your design.
Now you can dig in.Set a date, and get growing!

When most kids go to the beach, they're too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.
Cash, who is now known as the “conservation kid”, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn't sit_back.
He started with cleanups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors. In 2019, Cash, together with a Canadian conservationist, Ella Galaski-Rossen, started a nonprofit called the Cleanup Kids.Despite living in different counties, they managed to create educational videos online.“We hope to be a really big nonprofit that eliminates plastic in the US and Canada,” Cash said.“We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states on how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,” Cash said.
Cash was selected as one of America's top 10 youth volunteers by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He also earned the title of National Honoree, where he received a D|S5,000 grant to go to a nonprofit of his choice, and he became the first person to win the Youth Conservationist Award two years in a row from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.
“I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean.Because if you are connected to the ocean — if you love it and what lives in it — you'll want to protect it,” he said.“This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.”

Ninety-seven percent of Earth's water is ocean. No blue, no green. If you think the ocean isn't important, imagine Earth without it.Fifty years ago, when I began exploring the ocean, no one realized that we human being could do anything to harm the ocean.
For me, as a woman scientist, it all began in 1953 when I first tried diving. In 1979, by using a submersible (潜水器), I had a chance to reach the ocean floor which was six miles offshore and 1,250 feet down.Since then, I've used about 30 kinds of submarines. We need new deep-diving submersible. We need to see the undersea mountains and understand life in the deep sea.Exploring and protecting the wild ocean is my big wish.
What's worrying us is that an ice-free Arctic Ocean may happen in this century. That's bad news for the polar bears.Additional CO2 is not only driving global warming, but also changing ocean chemistry, making the sea more acidic (酸的).That's bad news for coral reefs and oxygen-producing plankton (浮游生物).Actually, nearly half of the coral reefs have disappeared. We're putting hundreds of millions of tons of plastic and other rubbish into the sea. We're blocking the ocean, poisoning the planet's circulatory system. Most of the turtles, sharks, tunas and whales are way down in numbers. All of these are part of our life support system.
Health to the ocean means health for us.I wish we would use all means — films, explorations, the web, new submarines — and campaign to stimulate public support for ocean protected areas. My wish is a big wish, but if we can make it happen, it can truly save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet. For the children of today, for tomorrow's children: as never again, now is the time.
