A girl went to her father to ask for his advice. She was having a hard time in life. It seemed that when one problem disappeared, another one appeared. It was terrible!
Her father, a cook, took her into the kitchen. He poured water into three pots and put them on the stove to boil. After the water boiled, he put some carrots into the first pot, some eggs into the second pot and coffee beans into the last one.
After 20 minutes, her father turned off the stove, took out the carrots and eggs and put them in a bowl. He poured the coffee into a cup.
“Dear, what do you see?” he asked his daughter. “Carrots, eggs and coffee,” she said.
“Touch the carrots,” he told her. She did and felt that the carrots were soft. After that, he asked her to take an egg and break it. She found that the egg was hard. At last, her father asked her to taste the coffee.
“What’s the meaning, dad?” she asked.
“The carrots go into the pot hard but come out soft. The eggs go in with a soft inside but come out with a hard center. However, the coffee beans don’t just get boiled. They change the water into something new and wonderful—coffee,” her father said. “As you can see, each thing reacts differently to the boiling water.”

Scientists from England made some robots that look like fish. The robots can swim just like fish do. Scientists will put these fish robots into the sea near Spain this year. These fish robots will help people find out the pollution in water and they can also be used in saving lives. If the fish robot is able to finish its work successfully, scientists hope they can be used in waters around the world.
The fish robot is about 1.5 meters long. It can swim as fast as swimmers at a speed of 0.5 meters a second. There is a detector (探测器) in their bodies. The detector can find the pollution in the water, and then the fish robots will eat part of it. It can also help to find lives in the water and bring them to the beach.
The robots all have a special battery. Because of it, the robots can “swim” for eight hours in the sea freely and don’t get tired from doing the same stroke (泳姿) again and again. So, they send back information to people on the beach efficiently. When their energy runs down, they will go back to the beach by themselves. But the study shows that these robots have some flaws. Scientists say there are still some things that need to be improved. The robots are not ready to take the place of humans.
Now, there are five fish robots in all. The cost of them is too high now. Each costs about 29, 000 dollars. They are part of a three-year program between engineering company BMT Group and Essex University in England.

Very often, when we see young people sitting there, looking at the screen of a mobile phone and smiling, we may think nothing is wrong. But when we come to the question “How much time do they actually spend on media daily?”, the answer is surprising: young people spend about nine hours every day using media, and this only includes media used for enjoyment.
Today’s young people seem to have become crazy multi-taskers. They often use media when doing other activities. Some watch TV when doing homework, some text, and some others listen to music. But what do young people think of this? A research showed that two thirds of them believed watching TV or texting had no influence on their schoolwork. Half of them thought using social media made no difference. However, researches have given a different answer: “media multi-taskers” did worse in tests.
Scientists did a research among more than 400 students. It shows that those who text a lot have more trouble sleeping and do worse in their study. In another research, students who didn’t text during a lesson took down a lot more notes than those who were texting. A similar research also found that students who texted when doing schoolwork had lower grades. According to a research, if a kid uses social media a lot, especially at night, he or she will sleep worse and feel more nervous and depressed (消沉的). On the one hand, young people stay up late to check messages and information. They may also be woken up by messages they receive. On the other hand, even the light from a screen could influence their sleep. Some other researchers also show that children who use media at night go to bed later, get fewer hours of sleep each week, and become sleepy more easily during the daytime.
51.The answer to the question in Paragraph 1 is surprising because young people ________.
A.always sit for a long time doing nothing
B.often look at their mobile phones and smile
C.spend a long time on media for fun daily
D.use different kinds of media to relax
52.According to the article, young people use media for about ________ every week.
A.55 hours B.63 hours C.75 hours D.85 hours
53.The underlined word “multi-taskers” in Paragraph 2 refers to people who ________.
A.ask a lot of questions B.use different mobile phones for learning
C.have several mobile phones D.do more than one thing at the same time
54.From the passage we can learn that a kid will probably ________ if he or she uses social media a lot at night.
A.become more worried B.get more excited
C.take fewer notes in class D.sleep much better
55.What is the article mainly about?
A.Social media is very popular among young people.
B.Using media too much has a bad influence on young people.
C.The use of social media has both advantages and disadvantages.
D.Mobile phones are the main tools students use for school learning.

阅读下面的短文,然后根据文章内容简要回答第86至90小题,并将答案写在答题卡上的相应位置。
When you look at a mountain with snow on the top, it looks so beautiful. But that can change very quickly if an avalanche happens.
An avalanche is quite a lot of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, usually on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at speeds at 96 km/h to 129 km/h.
Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of humans, like climbers and snow mobiles (雪地摩托). Strong winds, earthquakes, and even animals can also make them happen.
Avalanches happen all year around. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Alps and the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When it happens, the fast-moving snow, ice and rocks can cover people, all the houses and villages along the way. The snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold.
However, what can we do to keep safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Education and right training can help. They can give us useful advice. For example, never start climbing when the snow begins melting (融化), especially in spring. Avalanches may happen in this season at any minute. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Bring useful tools, like a beacon (信标) to help others find you. Phones sometimes don’t work on mountains. Keeping quiet on the mountains is also important.
Anyway, avalanches are part of nature. We need to have respect for the mountains and weather all the time.

Matt and his mum lived in the country next to a huge forest. There were trees and birds everywhere. They went walking in the forest every weekend. They looked for birds, found feathers and picked berries. Matt thought he lived in the best place in the whole world.
But at the start of spring, everything changed. His family moved to the city as his mum found a new job. There was no forest in the neighbourhood, and that made Matt sad.
Mrs. Potter, Matt’s new neighbour, was an old lady who lived alone. One day, Matt saw her carrying a pot into the building. It seemed a bit heavy, so Matt helped carry it to her home.
Once Mrs. Potter opened the door, Matt was amazed at the view in front of him. It was a forest, but it wasn’t like any forest he had seen before. There were many trees—real ones. But each one was in a pot. They were everywhere in the room. Matt felt as if he was in a fairy land.
“I see you like indoor forest,” said Mrs. Potter. “They are beautiful,” said Matt.
“Would you like to take some trees home? Thank you so much for helping me today,” said Mrs. Potter.
“Yes, please!” said Matt, excitedly.
Mrs. Potter gave Matt two potted (盆栽的) trees. She showed him how to care for the trees. Matt kept them on his balcony (阳台).

试题91 参考文章:
My Health Plan
Obesity among children and teenagers is a growing problem in our country. It can cause serious health problems like heart disease and high blood pressure, and may also lead to lower self-confidence and social difficulties.
To fight against this, I have made a detailed health plan for myself. First, regarding my diet, I will follow the guidelines strictly. This means eating more vegetables and fruits, choosing whole grains instead of refined ones, and reducing the intake of sugary drinks and high-fat snacks. I plan to have balanced meals with proper portions. Second, I will increase my physical activity. I aim to do at least one hour of moderate exercise every day, such as jogging, swimming, or playing basketball. I will also reduce my screen time and avoid sitting for too long. Lastly, I will ensure I get enough sleep every night, as good sleep is crucial for a healthy metabolism.
I believe by sticking to this plan, I can not only control my weight but also build a stronger and healthier body. I look forward to sharing my progress with my classmates at the next English corner.
试题92 参考文章续写(续写段落):
The blackbird became a regular visitor.Soon, the little balcony became a lively mini-forest. The fat blackbird brought its friends – sparrows, finches, and even a pair of colorful butterflies. They nested in the branches and feasted on the berries. Insects like ladybugs and bees were also attracted by the small flowers that bloomed. Matt, with Mrs. Potter‘s guidance, learned to care for this ecosystem. He added a small birdbath and planted more berry bushes in pots. Their shared love for this green space brought Matt and Mrs. Potter closer. They spent afternoons together, watering plants and watching the birds. Neighbors, curious about the chirping and greenery, started to visit. Some were inspired to put plants on their own balconies. Gradually, Matt’s “secret forest” was no longer a secret; it became a small green heart in the building, connecting people with nature and each other. Through this, Matt found his unique place in the new city. He realized that home is not just a place with a forest outside the window, but where you can grow your own forest and share its life and joy with others.
