Maria Montessori stood before a crowd of 60 disadvantaged children, her students. It
was January 6,1907,and the 36-year-old educator was opening her first school:the Casa
dei Bambini,or Children's House.
Born in 1870 and raised in Rome, she took a path that defied the era's expectations for
women.Montessori studied engineering, then applied to medical school at the University of
Rome, and the school refused her,so Montessori entered the general university;studied
physics, mathematics and natural sciences;and reapplied to medical school. She was
admitted finally, becoming the first woman to enter the university's Faculty of Medicine,
and in July 1896,she became one of Italy's first female doctors.
Montessori's medical work led her to the University of Rome's clinic. As part of her
job,she visited centers for children with mental disorders. It was here that her interest in
child development took root. Then, she read extensively about children with learning
differences,including the writings of Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard,a 19th-century French
physician who worked with deaf children and the wild boy of Aveyron,a teenager who'd
famously raised himself in the woods.
She developed her own teaching materials, and in 1907,she opened her first school.
Montessori introduced her students to stimulating activities and materials the kids were
interested in.She realized that providing children with stimulating activities would help
them more than rote(死记硬背)learning and academic drills, and she thought that,
surrounded by such activities, students could educate themselves.Montessori's self-named
auto-education approach soon had the 5-year-olds at Casa dei Bambini reading and writing.
News of Montessori's success spread quickly, and by 1908,her name was known
around the world.By the fall of 1908,five Case dei Bambini were operating in Italy.
Years later,Montessori published a book,The Montessori Method, which was printed in
English in the United States in 1912;over time,it was translated into 20 different languages.
In the following decades,Montessori schools and teacher training programs sprang up
around the world.
24.What does the underlined word "defied"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Followed.
B.Experienced.

In southern Bulgaria,in the village of Tyurkmen, many brick houses sit empty.
Their roofs are falling in.Gergana Daskalova,an ecologist who spent summers here with
her grandparents as a young girl, points to a child's book lying in the ruins."Somebody
poured their heart and soul in creating a home, and now it's just collapsing,"she says.
A century ago,a thousand people lived in this village.Today, there're only about
200.People left for jobs in Bulgaria's cities,or abroad. The villagers may still own land
around the village, but much of that land now sits unused.Shrubs()and small
trees are taking over.Even while large farming enterprises clear forests in Brazil or
Bolivia in order to raise cattle or grow crops, some farmers elsewhere are walking away
from their land, letting nature reclaim it.In recent years, farmers have walked away
from land in Eastern Europe,India,Kazakhstan,Japan, and South Korea.By one
estimate, the area of farmland that's been abandoned around the world since 1950 could
be as much as half of Australia.
The familiar scenes of Daskalova's childhood are now the subject of her ecological
research."I really wanted to see, what does human migration()mean for nature, for
biodiversity?"Daskalova says."And what are some of the ways that we could reimagine
villages in a way that is good for both people and for nature?"
In Kreslyuvtsi, one of the completely abandoned villages, wild blackberries fill what
once were gardens.According to Daskalova, when people left,a poorer version of nature
took over."The blackberries are stopping the growth of other things,"she says.
Daskalova says the blackberries are choking the group of birds and plants that used to live
in the gardens here.
It illustrates why many European environmentalists want old-style farmers to stay in
business;without people, cattle or sheep around, grasslands filled with wildflowers and
butterflies give way to shrubs and trees, which ecologists say are often less biologically diverse.
28.Why does the author mention Daskalova's childhood?
A.To criticize common rural abandonment.
B.To promote people's ecological awareness.
C.To contrast the village's past and present.
D.To emphasize the long history of the village.
29.What do we know about abandoned farmland?
A.It is being replaced by forests.
B.It has increased biodiversity.
C.It is a global phenomenon.
D.It can improve soil quality.

A new paper by researchers at the University of Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre for
the Future of Intelligence warns that large language models (LLMs)like ChatGPT aren't
just changing how we interact with technology, they're laying the groundwork for a new
marketplace where our intentions could become products to be bought and sold.
Significant resources have been invested to position Al assistants in every area of life.
For decades, tech companies have profited from what's known as the attention economy,
where our eyeballs and digital actions are the currency().Social media platforms and
websites compete for our limited focus, serving up endless streams of content and ads.
But according to researchers Chaudhary and Dr.Jonnie Penn,we're witnessing early signs
of something potentially more far-reaching:an economic system that could treat our
motivations and plans as valuable data to be collected and traded.
Apple'snew“App Intents”developer framework(框架)for Siri includes guidelines to
"predict actions someone might take in future"and suggest apps based on these
predictions.OpenAI has openly called for "data that expresses human intention...across
any language, topic, and format."Meanwhile,Meta has been researching
"Intentonomy, developing datasets for understanding human intentions.Major tech
companies are positioning themselves for this potential future.Microsoft has partnered
with OpenAI in what the researchers describe as "the largest system development that
humanity has ever seen,"investing over 50 billion annually from 2024 onward.
What makes this potential new economy particularly concerning is its deeply personal
nature. The researchers warn that unless controlled, this developing intention economy
"will treat your motivations as the new currency"in what amounts to "a gold rush for
those who target and sell human intentions".An intention economy's targets could extend
far beyond vacation planning or shopping habits. The researchers argue we must consider
the likely impact on human dreams, including free and fair elections,a free press, and
fair market competition, before we become victims of unintended consequences.
32.What does the attention economy focus on?
A.User engagement and clicks.
B.AI assistant development.
C.Promotions of social interactions.
D.Trends of market competitions
33.What can we conclude about the intention economy from Paragraph 3?
A.Its early marketplace is already visible.
B.Its focuses are on social media content.
C.It is replacing the attention economy now.
D.It may cost companies more than they earn.
34.What is researchers'suggestion concerning the intention economy?
A.Boosting it temporarily.
B.Adapting its potential fully.
C.Managing it with clear rules.
D.Prioritizing its profit opportunities.

portunity to understand and participate in cultural and artistic creation.39 This

The girl's voice was trembling,but the owner replied,"I'm sorry.This is a business,not
a charity.”
At that moment,Mark, who ran a fruit shop nearby, overheard the conversation.
He approached the girl and asked gently,"What's the matter, little one?"The owner
interrupted,"She's asking for free food, but I can't just give it away.Mark looked at
the girl and said,“Let me handle this.”
Mark paid for a big loaf of bread and handed it to the girl. After the owner left,
Mark knelt down and asked,"What's your name, and why are you here alone?"The girl,
wiping her tears, replied,"My name is Tina.I'm seven. My father passed away last
year, and my mother is sick and hasn't eaten anything for days.I just wanted to give her
something to eat'”
Moved,Mark gave her some money and said,"Take this and rush your mom to a
doctor."Mark's daughter Eva,who had been watching quietly, ran back to their fruit
shop. She returned with a big watermelon."This is for you and your mom,"Eva said
with a warm smile.Tina's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at Mark and Eva.She
firmly remembered them in her heart. Then she bowed deeply to them, and silently said
in her heart,"When I grow up,I'll repay you two.
Twenty years later,Tina became a department head at a local hospital. It turned out
