I've always enjoyed walking but never in a million years did I imagine I'd end up
walking over 200 kilometers in 10 days, become a fan of walking holidays, and end up
developing self-guided hiking routes in Portugal with a local tour operator as part of my
business.
The shift from being someone who was content with an easy three-hour walk to an
experienced multi-day hiker began with a brief taste of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago,
an ancient trail()through Portugal to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain.
Back in 2013 I did a guided one-day hike along one of the most challenging sections of
the Camino,so it was hard work, but the views from the top of Labruja Mountain made
the climb worthwhile. My guides were so enthusiastic about the excitement of arriving at
Santiago de Compostela Cathedral after the challenges of day after day on the Camino that
I began to think I might want to give it a go.
Fast forward a few years and I set off from Barcelos with a friend of mine to follow
the Portuguese Camino de Santiago.Apart from suffering from back pain,I thought I
was quite fit but nothing had prepared me for how completely tired I would feel at the end
of each walking day. This was truly a slow travel experience,as we were averaging about
20 kilometers per day,and by the time we reached our hotel,I would barely have enough
energy to get cleaned up and find food before collapsing.
Quickly,I realized the moral of this unique travel experience. The Camino was all
about making the most of the journey rather than the destination. For me,that was quite
a shift in thinking as I am usually all about getting to where I want to be as soon as possible so
that I can start exploring. It was, perhaps, also my first step on the path towards mindfulness.
24.What contributes to the author's becoming an experienced multi-day hiker?
A.His business as a local tour operator.
B.His dream of becoming a fan of walking holidays.
C.A short trip along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago.
D.The experience of walking over 200 kilometers in 10 days.

A.The daily plan of the hike.

Picture this-thousands of screenshots,unopened texts and emails,and a worrying
notification()that your phone's storage is almost full. For many, such is the new
reality in the digital age.But if your device is filled with too much digital clutter(),it
could be affecting your mental health and productivity, experts say.
"It's something that causes a lot of stress and anxiety, the collection of emails, pictures,
open tabs-a huge number of digital items that result in overload,"said Dr.Susan Albers,a
clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio."What's interesting about it is that this
isn't the type of problem that our ancestors have had to face, but when we fast-forward to
today, our daily life is really troubled by a lot of digital clutter,"she added.
Maybe you want to hold on to memories through pictures or hang on to unneeded
documents and files from college courses or old jobs just in case."But sometimes, when
the behavior turns into large amounts of information being stored,it can be considered
hoarding(囤积),”said Albers..
A digital hoarding disorder will be fueled by a consistent urge to save digital information,
rather than a "preference"to store that is more flexible. It is estimated that about 3%to
5%of the global population suffer from hoarding disorder.
What can you do if you are experiencing digital hoarding?“Decluttering(请理)is like a
magic stick to your mental health,Albers said. For those who struggle with decluttering, she
recommends contributing a few minutes each morning to doing a digital check, deleting emails
and other notifications that aren't needed."If you spend a couple of minutes decluttering
before you start working,it's going to pave the way for the rest of your day to be much
more productive.”
"We all deal with digital clutter more than we think what we do,she added,"and I
think that is one simple way.If we put a little bit of time into it,that has great payoffs in
terms of our productivity and just overall happiness."
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Our ancestors created some digital clutter.
B.People spend more time on digital devices today.
C.Digital clutter makes us overloaded and curious.
D.Digital clutter is the product of social development.
29.When does information become hoarding according to Albers?
A.It is shared with others.
B.It is deleted regularly.
C.It contains many pictures.
D.It adds up to huge quantity.

The chocolate industry is having a meltdown.Cocoa prices have doubled since the
start of the year,as crops in West Africa-which produces 80%of the world's cocoa-
have been hit by droughts made worse by climate change. One way to tackle this problem
is to make chocolate without using cocoa beans.Cocoa-free chocolate is already available
but scientists around the world are looking for new ways to make it greener and healthier,
using new techniques and ingredients(成分).
Finding the right ingredients, however, can take time."Between our first recipe and
our current one,we've had 500 versions-and nothing from that initial product has
survived into the commercial one,"said Max Marquart of German company Planet A
Foods, which produces ChoViva,a chocolate alternative made from sunflower seeds and
grape seeds. He defines the production process as "short and sustainable",as the ingredients
are sourced close to the production facilities in the Czech Republic.
Price,he added,is a major consideration when it comes to getting people to switch to
cocoa-free chocolate."It doesn't make any sense to try to change people's behaviors-that
wouldn't work. You want to reach them by making it very easy for them:no change in
flavor,no change in price, but at the same time they get more sustainability, for free.
Another UK-based company,named Nukoko,has a different recipe."Instead of
cocoa beans,we use fava beans sourced from farms across the UK and Europe.Flavor
matching is a trickier spot, but because our process is so similar to actual cocoa fermentation(
)we can get closer than anyone else to actually matching real cocoa flavor, said Ross
Newton,CEO of Nukoko.
Newton thinks that chocolate alternatives will become a huge part of the market over
the next five years."The climate modeling data shows that we could be looking at around
25%0 of cocoa farms not being able to actually supply the market.Replacing the chocolate
completely or just being mixed with alternative products like we want to do,to bring
down the overall cocoa content, can help with sustainability-but also with costs.
32.Why is the rise of cocoa prices mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To show the costs of using new techniques.
B.To explain the poor harvest in West Africa.
C.To stress the consequences of climate change.
D.To introduce the necessity of cocoa-free chocolate.
33.What is essential for consumers to switch to cocoa-free chocolate according to Max
Marquart?
A.Increased nutritional benefits.
B.Significant discounts on new products.
C.More educational and advertising campaigns.
D.Identical flavor and price to traditional chocolate.

It's hard enough getting motivated to study for yourself, let alone helping a friend or
colleague to.36 Through positive feedback and reinforcement()while maintaining
their motivation, you can encourage anybody to hit the books.
37 You should ask your friend to talk about what's hard for them when it comes
to studying, and how you can best help them. You can ask questions like "What do you
feel unsure about?Do you need me to help you keep focused while you study?"
It is equally helpful to ask your friend to think about what they specifically want to
achieve from studying. Then, have them list the smaller goals they will have to achieve
along the way to reach the bigger ones.If necessary, have them break down the goals to
their smallest individual steps.38
Setting rewards for reaching goals is important, too.Have your friend decide on
what they'll earn for reaching their study goals. It could be watching a favorite show or
playing a video game.Have them write it down if necessary.39 You can say something
like "Remember, you can go watch or play as much as you want once you're finished
studying..”
Finally, try having them associate studying with something they want to do.For
instance,if they love adventures, suggest they imagine exploring new places after they've
finished studying.40 Remind them that every bit of progress they make in their
studies is a ticket closer to their desired destination.By linking studying to their passions,
you can make the process more enjoyable and meaningful for them.
A.Have them write down their intended goals.
B.Actually, there are many you can do to offer help.
C.Make sure to remind them of the rewards as motivation.
D.Let them schedule a time to meet with them if necessary.

One cold, rainy morning in December,I was driving to my hometown in Illinois to
visit family. The trip usually took three hours, but this time, the weather added an extra
layer of challenge.I had just passed through a small town and was driving along a
two-lane road, the kind of road where civilization seemed to fade into the mist.
As I drove,my thoughts wandered to the upcoming holidays and the long-awaited
reunion with my family. The expectation of seeing my parents,my brothers and sisters,
and my old friends filled my mind, and I couldn't help but smile at the thought of sharing
stories and laughter over Christmas dinner. When it was about 20 miles away from my
destination,it rained more heavily. My travel became harder and harder,as I could
hardly see clearly.Just then, something unexpected occurred to me.
I was traveling at about 40 mph when I saw a small, white cat rushed out from
underneath the car directly in front of me.Immediately,I put on the brakes(),but it
was too late. The cat appeared in my headlights, its eyes wide with terror. My heart sank
at the sight and I was at a loss what to do.My hands tightened on the wheel as I tried to
steady myself, and I knew I couldn't just drive away without seeing if she was still alive.
I pulled over to the side of the road,my hands trembling as I turned off the engine.
The rain had turned into a steady downpour, and through the mirror,I could see the
small, white cat lying motionless in the middle of the road.My heart ached with guilt,
and I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just been a part of something horrible.
