A few weeks ago,I went to The Magic Castle,a 60-year-old performance site for magicians.I lucked into
a seat next to a magician who would perform later in the evening.
I wanted to know all about how he got into the field. The magician,William Watt, explained that his
parents wanted him to go into business,so he studied marketing, but just couldn't stick with it,so he went into
magic."But isn't marketing just another form of magic?"I thought.Marketers try to get us to believe how a
piece of software can work wonders,or our future state must be better if we purchase their products.Don't
skillful magicians do the same?
These folks know how to seize the spotlight and stage an eye-catching show.Within seconds, they capture
our attention and never let it go.In William's case,he drew us in by asking for a diamond ring from an
audience member. Then he threw it into a locked safe and handed it back to the now-nervous lady.He attracted
us at once and kept our focus till the curtain fell. With each trick, audiences sat statue still, watching and
rying to figure out“How he did that!?"
Besides, the magicians adopt different approaches in their shows. After taking the diamond ring,William
continued with tricks flowing from one to the next, completely pulling the audience into his performance. The
show reached its height when William asked the audiences to call out numbers that they could enter into their
phone calculator. Those numbers which eventually added up to a four-digit number, which, you guessed it,was
the code to the locked safe!As he handed back the ring,William delivered a moving talk about loving each other.
英语·第3页(共8页)
The show began with a ring-a promise made-and ended with one, too. In between,William took us
on a journey that felt less like a set of tricks but more like Cupid's PowerPoint slides.Once again I thought,
“How he did that!.?”
24.What is the similarity of marketing and magic?
A.Connecting total strangers closely.
B.Assisting people to be better selves.
C.Making profits for people involved.

A.How to design tricks.
B.How to analyze cases.
C.How to hold attention.
D.How to control others.
26.How did William bring the show to its peak?
A.By guessing numbers.
B.By unlocking the safe.
C.By doing a calculation.
D.By engaging audiences.
27.Why did the show feel like a journey of love?
A.The tricks centered around the constant theme.B.The magician helped a couple get back together.
C.The show revealed the means to keep a promise.D.The audiences shared their love stories in reality.

Every year, about I billion birds in the US face challenges in urban settings, where they can be trapped by
power lines or crash into towering buildings.
Fortunately, activists are working tirelessly to create safer environments for birds. They have adopted novel
solutions, such as using bird-safe glasses and reducing light pollution,to make urban space more welcoming for
our feathered friends.Yet,even with these improvements, injuries still occur, and that's where BirdAid comes
into play.
As a user-friendly first-aid kit,BirdAid aims to assist whoever attends to injured birds and facilitate their
recovery without complex procedures. The designers have developed tablets and splints (made from materials
without being chemically processed and categorized with plant-based colourings.
The designers began by producing tablets with safe natural materials for injured birds. The tablets contains
a protein base that supports bone recovery and can be digested easily by birds. Each tablet is color-coded.For
instance, red tablets are intended for severe injuries, while yellow ones for moderate injuries with visible
swelling ()Green lablets are suitable for minor injuries.
Then they tested the decomposition cycles of the splints to match various healing (needs. The
natural materials used allow the splints to split up at a rate that adapts to the healing process and re-enter the
natural cycles, thus avoiding the nced for future intervention.Three splint variations with different
decompositon rates are also colored with natural plants, signaling the expected duration of support.
The kit is packed with a QR code for detailed instructions to guide users. So users can accordingly select
the appropriate colored tablet to feed the injured bird and attach the proper splint to the injury.
This approach provides injured birds with an opportunity for survival, promoting a harmonious coexistence
between birds and the urban environment. While the BirdAid offers a simple yet powerful way to support birds
with minimal impact on nature, the product is still in development, and currently it's best to leave the bird care
to experts.
28.What do we know about BirdAid?

C.It consists of naturally sourced substances.
D.It restricts the impact of the light pollution.

D.Types of the support.
30.What does the underlined word"decomposition"in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Recovery.
B.Digestion.

Have you ever watched someone work and thought,"That's nol the way I would do it.If you don't think
the work habits are effective, you probably won't engage in them. But,that is exactly what gets average leaders
in trouble. They often stick to their own ideas and forget that others may have effective strategies as well.
Imaginc George, who is naturally an early riser, gets up at 5:30.After exercising and eating breakfast,he
starts his workday at 7:00.He prefers to balance his work and life. So,from 7:00 until 15:00,George focuses
merely on work.At 15:00,George switches his laptop off to pick up his kids from school and spend the evening
accompanying his family and working out.
Now,imagine Crace,naturally a night person,gets up at 8:30.After doing some morning chores,she
starts her workday at 10:00.She prefers to integrate her work and life tasks, which means that she extends her
workday into the later hours. At 19:00,she stops working formally but continues to complete minor tasks until
21:00.Meanwhile,she might order takeaway food and check social media posts.
If Grace reports to George,he might advise her to change her schedule.Yet,it's entirely possible that they
are equally productive, despite that they work in totally different ways.
Great leaders recognize that there are many ways to be productive.Instead of expecting that others will
structure their workdays exactly as they do,they will provide employees with scheduling freedom and allow them
to follow their own rhythms.Of course, there are certainly times when employees may need to go against their
natural tendencies-for an important client meeting or all-hands call, when scheduling according to each
person's preference is impossible. But for standing meetings or other work blocks in which leaders and
employees have more control, leaning into employees'preferences is useful.
By acknowledging there are always better strategies and approaches, great leaders can assist employees to
pursue the pathway that best fits with their productivity patterns and increase the likelihood that they will succeed.
32.What might average leaders believe?
A.They know the exact right approach to the tasks.B.They can create an engaging work atmosphere.
C.They take full advantage of various work habits.D.They can avoid trouble by obeying rules in teams
33.How would George describe Grace's work and life?
A.Organized and leisurely.
B.Inefficient and imbalanced.
C.Unproductive but comfortable.
D.Professional but undisciplined.
34.In which occasion should personal preference be ignored?
A.Official trade negouations.
B.Optional design workshops.
C.Mini brainstorming sessions.
D.Casual department meetings.
35.What qualities of great leaders are mentioned?
A.Passion and inclusiveness.
B.Productivity and strength.
C.Flexibility and humbleness.
D.Concentration and courage.

day.
38 In fact,a built-in mechanism (can explain:the biological clock controls many processes in
your body, including sleep. So try to follow the biological clock by introducing some bedtime routines. You can

allow your body to settle. And it might seem obvious, but for many of us it's harder than it sounds:40

I'm Zach,and I don't have a treehouse.But my neighbor,Oliver?He's got a treehouse that was built just
for him!
What I have is a pile of old books passed down for generations and a loud family! My mom whistles
while she drives,my dad sings in the shower,my brother Zeke plays the drum in our room, and my sister
Zelda shouts when she's happy and screams when she's not.
I wonder what to do to get some quiet.Every once in a while,I catch a break and get a single moment of
quiet,but it never lasts.
One evening,I begged at the dinner table,"Please, please, please can I have a treehouse?"Dad smiled,
"Need to get away from us?"Zeke questioned me with a puzzled look,"You prefer to look at the stars like
Oliver rather than be accompanied by your families?"Mom joined in,"Maybe Oliver will invite you over."I
doubted it.Oliver kept to himself at school, reading his stargazing guide.I argued,"He's an only child. He
doesn't need a treehouse as much as I do.Then Dad replied,"His parents always say Oliver wants a lively
family as ours."OK,end of the conversation.
After dinner,I went to my room to read my pirate (book.Just as Captain Longbeard was checking
on his crew,Zeke came in for his drum practice."Thump-clash,thump-thump-clash."It was time for me to
"abandon the ship".I took my book and tried the living room, but Mom and Zelda were dancing at full volume.
"Zach, come join us!"Mom shouted over the music.I gave Zelda a spin and then danced out of the back door.
At last,it was quiet.I looked up at Oliver's treehousc, and saw Oliver being there all alone. It was easy to
tell that he must have been watching us for a while-his eyes carried the longing for our warmth and noise.
Noticing me,he shyly waved and softly called,"Want to come over?"
